In a smart ploy to ridicule the sitting Bayelsa State governor, Seriake Dickson, the All Progressives Congress, APC, governorship candidate in the coming Guber polls in the state,Timipre Sylva, on Tuesday along with some members embarked on evacuating the refuse in Yenagoa, Bayelsa State capital.
Slyva and his party members, who rolled out in batches to different parts of the city, were dressed in vests with inscription “APC cleans Bayelsa” and had brooms, buckets, shovels, rakes as well as refuse trucks and other earth-moving equipment to carry out clean-up exercise.
Strategic locations in the metropolis that were cleaned up include Swali market, Kpansia market, Kpansia Community Secondary School, Opolo market, among others.
Following the development, the Bayelsa State government ordered the mobilisation of contractors to clear the garbage in a desperate efforts to avoid embarrassment.
Highlight of the dramatic scene had the APC members and government contractors clearing the heaps of refuse side by side and left the state capital in a cleaner shape.
Speaking on the exercise, the director, Media and Publicity, Sylva-Igiri Campaign Organisation, Nathan Egba, decried the negligence of the state government in its role to manage the dirty environments in the state.
Egba explained that “the reason for doing this is simple as everybody now knows that the government is not able to manage the environmental sanitation situation in the state”.
Though APC’s action appears to be a politically motivated initiative, he stressed that “the idea is simple, to help the government clear up the places and to ensure that our people are able to live in epidemic and disease free environment.”
Egba said that the exercise would be a continuous one and would be replicated in other parts of the state, noting that the APC had received invitations for assistance from other communities in the state.
In a response, the Seriake Dickson campaign team described the exercise by the opposition as a “deceitful style of campaign”, accusing the APC of being responsible for the heaps of refuse in Yenagoa.
The campaign group lamented the APC campaign strategy while advising Bayelsa people and other residents of the state to be wary of the antics of the opposition party’s members “who are desperate to grab power through the back door by advancing various dubious means”.
