The ICIR reports that building collapses have been recurring across Nigeria, especially in the country’s capital, Abuja (in the North-Central) and the southern part of the country.
On Sunday, October 26, this organisation reported how many people were trapped in a building that collapsed in the Sabon-Lugbe area of the nation’s capital.
The minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, had ordered the demolition of some illegal structures in the area.
The collapsed building was among those earlier touched by bulldozers, and it caved in when scavengers attempted to steal iron from one of its pillars.
Seven dead bodies were reportedly pulled out of the rubbles.
The development occurred months after a school building collapsed in the Busa Buji community of Jos, Plateau State on Friday, July 12.
The ICIR reported that at least 17 people died and 154 others were injured as a result of the collapse which occurred when the school children were said to be writing their final term exams.
The ICIR also reported how available records showed that 49 people died in the city from building collapse within 10 years
