EFCC disowns own tweet threatening Fayose with prosecution

THE Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has disowned the statement it made on Twitter, threatening to resume its investigation on Ayodele Fayose, Governor of Ekiti State, once his tenure expires.

Following the defeat of Olusola Eleka, candidate of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) in the last Saturday’s governorship election in Ekiti State, the EFCC tweeted on its verified handle thus: “The parri (party) is over, the cloak of immunity torn apart, and the staff broken. Ekiti Integrated Poultry Project/Biological concepts Limited N1.3 billion fraud case file dusted off the shelves. See you soon.”

The statement was retweeted over one thousand times.

The ICIR, in its report of the development, also pointed out that a lot of Nigerians condemned the EFCC’s action, describing it as partisan. The controversy and criticisms that accompanied the tweet forced the EFCC to pull it down hours later.

The ICIR got a screenshot of the EFCC’s tweet before it was pulled down.

Wilson Uwajuren, spokesman of the EFCC, issued a statement late on Monday, disowning the tweet and saying it did not represent the views of the commission.

“Against the background, the commission is constrained to state that the purported tweet does not represent the views of the EFCC,” Uwajuren said.

“As a law enforcement organisation the commission is apolitical and was not involved in the recent Ekiti election. It, therefore, has no reason to gloat over the political misfortune of any candidate or political god-father.”

Uwajuren did not say whether any disciplinary actions will be taken against the handler of the commission’s Twitter account for publishing an authorised statement.

He, however, pointed out that there is a subsisting criminal charge against Fayose, adding that the  Federal High Court, Ado Ekiti, will determine what becomes of it when Fayose’s tenure expires.
