Fayemi defeats Olusola, PDP candidate

For the second time, Dr. John Kayode Fayemi has won in the 2018 Ekiti State governorship election having polled 197,459, while his closest challenger, Kolapo Olusola Eleka of People’s Democratic Party, PDP scored 178,121.

Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC declared him  the winner  this morning, Sunday July 15.

Fayemi scored the highest votes in 12 local government areas while  Kolapo Olusola  won only in 4 local government areas.

The local government areas won by Fayemi are:  Irepodun/Ifelodun, Oye, Ido Osi,  Ilejemeje, Moba, Ijero, Gbonyin, Ikole, Ise Orun, Ekiti East , Ekiti West and Ekiti South West.

Kolapo won in: Ikere, Ado Ekiti, Emure and Efon.

Mr Olusola, the incumbent deputy governor of the state is the anointed candidate of Governor Ayodele Fayose.

 

Fayemi who resigned as Minister of Solid Minerals recently to contest the governorship seat, was defeated four years ago by the incumbent governor. 

The election though was adjudged peaceful, the Resident Electoral Commissioner in   the state Prof. Abdulganiy Raji, on Saturday, confirmed the disruption in some areas of the state.

Previous reports have indicated that PDP was waxing stronger, until the electoral body warned against  unauthorised declaration of results.

    NBC described the station’s breach of the Electoral Act and the Broadcasting Code on Political Broadcast as unacceptable.

    “The commission is particularly irked by the unauthorised declaration of results by the state governor in the state broadcast station.

    “This is after he went on air to make malicious and unsubstantiated comments against INEC, the Police and the SSS. The station will remain shut down until further notice.”

    The total votes cast was 403,451, with 384, 594 valid votes and 18,857 rejeted votes.
