ENDSARS: Sowore alleges Buratai, Malami, others of plot to assassinate him

0

OMOYELE Sowore, a Human Rights activist and publisher of Sahara Protesters, has alleged that a businessman close to the Muhammadu Buhari administration is plotting to assassinate him, adding that top officials of the Nigerian government are involved in the plot.

Sowore said this in a series of tweets on his official Twitter profile on Wednesday, stating that it is in connection with the ENDSARS protests.

“The plot against me has been on for weeks now, and I’ve been aware until the signal sent to security agencies leaked tonight. The is a businessman linked with the @mbuhari regime who’s threatened me for weeks unending since #endsars started,” Sowore said.

According to Sowore, Abubakar Malami, the Attorney General of the federation, Tukur Buratai, Chief of Army Staff, Ibrahim Gambari, Chief of Staff to Muhammadu Buhari are involved in the plot.

He added that Godwin Emefiele, governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria is ‘bankrolling’ the alleged assassination plot.

Sowore stated that on Tuesday, Malami approached a Court in the Federal Capital Territory headed by Justice AB Muhammed to obtain an ex-parte order against him and the Sahara Reporters.

The activist said Malami approached the court in order to make his assassination seem ‘civil and pretend he was not a part of the assassination squad’.

He further wrote that while protesting at the National Assembly last Friday, the Police team dispatched to the Assembly opened fire on him and stole one of his vehicles.

“They refused to return it even it was meant for press duties, the FCT Police Commissioner, Bala Ciroma told me the car committed a crime and will be charged.

Over the week their minions wrote press releases, letters to foreign embassies,

“TheNationNews was generous in claiming some “Genuine EndSars” people want me arrested. The Nigerian army had a team of Twitter influencers on Sunday suggesting I should be assassinated,” He tweeted.

In 2019, Sowore was illegally abducted and detained by operatives of the State Security Service (SSS) for staging the RevolutionNow protest calling for an end to bad governance in Nigeria.

After his illegal detention, he was arraigned in court on charges bordering on money laundering, treasonable felony and cyberstalking Nigeria President, Muhammadu Buhari.

Meanwhile, there has been a clampdown on the ENDSARS protests by the Nigerian government including illegal freezing of bank accounts and accusation of terrorism-related activities.

The former chairman of the Nigeria Bar Association (NBA) also said that eyewitnesses of the shooting and killings of peaceful ENDSARS protesters on Tuesday, 20 October were being threatened by agents of the Lagos state government.

The Central Bank of Nigeria has also frozen the bank accounts of 20 ENDSARS campaigners’ days before seeking the order of an FCT high court.

In further victimization of supporters of the ENDSARS protests, the Nigeria Immigration Service (NIS) also withheld the International passport of Modupe Odele aka Mochievous, a lawyer who provided free legal services to arrested ENDSARS protesters for several days before it was returned. The NIS violated sections of the 1999 constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, The ICIR had reported.

Restructuring, resource control, other issues, dominate Okowa’s interaction with journalists

0

IFEANYI Okowa, Delta State Governor, has said that states in the South-South region are united in the quest for the restructuring of the country.

Okowa stated this on Wednesday during his quarterly interaction with journalists Wednesday in Asaba.

He said that there was a need to restructure the country to pave the way for the devolution of more powers to states and local governments.

According to Okowa, who is the Chairman, South-South Governors’ Forum, Nigeria is not making progress as it ought to because the issues of restructuring and resource control are yet to be addressed.

He disclosed that restructuring and resource control as well as security would form a major plank of the discussion at a meeting between a presidential delegation and leaders of the South-South billed for Port Harcourt on Friday.

“The South-South Governors have been at the forefront for the devolution of power to states and local governments.

“Restructuring, resource control and security of the country, especially in the Niger Delta will be a major topic of discussion at the presidential parley coming up in Port Harcourt,” he said.

Responding to a question on the gold deposit in Zamfara and the decision by the state government to control the resource, the governor said that there were Acts of the National Assembly that dealt with oil production and solid minerals.

“We cannot apply laws in such a manner that it becomes discriminatory because you cannot mine solid minerals somewhere in Zamfara and you can’t allow Niger Delta to manage their oil,’’ he said.

On complaints from oil-producing communities, he said that there was an ongoing process to ensure that what got to the communities became statutory and enshrined in the Constitution or in the Petroleum Industry Bill (PIB).

Okowa said that governors in the South-South are doing well in managing the 13 percent Derivation fund to their states.

“The kind of money we spend, especially on road construction in the Niger Delta is very huge compared to what other states spend and we also spend lots of money securing oil facilities and keeping peace in the region.

“We have our DESOPADEC managing the derivation funds and I am convinced that they are doing their best to make life better for the oil-producing communities.

“We have been short-changed severally because we are not in control of how the funds are distributed. There is a lot of money being owed us on the derivation and we are working very hard to get the Federal Government to pay us because it will help us so much in our budget to provide more for the oil-producing communities.

“If every community rises up to control their resources then there will be chaos and anarchy,” he said.

The governor hinted that the state government may employ more teachers in the first quarter of 2021 to cater to newly established technical colleges being constructed across the state.

“In 2021 we will employ more teachers basically in Science and Technical Education. We will employ according to needs and not according to pressure.”

He said that his administration had completed many road projects, including the Ovwor-Effurun-Otor

Bridge in Ughelli South Council Area, adding that the government had also awarded and mobilised contractors for two major storm drainage projects in Warri, Uvwie and environs.

“We have mobilised them and I hope they work well in this dry season because without tackling the drainage systems in Warri, any road constructed there will not last,’’ he stated.

On tourism, Okowa stated that his administration was constructing Asaba Leisure and Film Village along Illah Road, adding that most movie producers will be headed to Asaba once the project is completed in May 2021.

Lekki shootings, Shitte killings and other lies peddled by Nigerian Army since 2015

0

NIGERIANS were shocked on October 20, after soldiers opened fire on unarmed #ENDSARS protesters who were protesting peacefully against police brutality at the Lekki toll gate in Lagos State.

The protesters had been at the Lekki toll gate for two weeks prior to the shooting by the Nigerian Army, protesting the extra-judicial killings and unlawful arrests perpetrated by the notorious police unit, Special Anti-Robbery Squad, SARS.

Several videos circulating on social media including a live stream Instagram video revealed that men dressed in Army fatigues had shot at the unarmed protesters and soldiers were also seen barricading the protest site before the shooting started.

On October 21, the Nigerian Army in responding to media reports on the Lekki shootings via its official Twiter handle @HQNigerianArmy claimed the reports on soldiers shooting the unarmed protesters were false and none of its men was present at the scene.

Seven days later, Major Osoba Olaniyi, Acting Deputy Director, 81 Division Army Public Relations, reversed the military’s initial position in a press statement, saying soldiers had been deployed to Lekki’s toll gate to enforce curfew announced by the Lagos State Government.

However, he denied that the troops deployed to the scene had shot at the protesters.

“The intervention of the military followed all laid down procedures for Internal Security operations and all the soldiers involved acted within the confines of the Rules of Engagement (ROE) for Internal Security operations.

“At no time did soldiers of the Nigerian army open fire on any civilian,” Olaniyi said in his statement.

The military’s statement came shortly before Amnesty International, AI, revealed that its investigation had tracked army vehicles from their Lagos barracks to Lekki Toll Gate using photographs and verified videos of the soldiers’ movements that had been posted on social media.

On October 24, Babajide Sanwo-Olu, the Lagos State governor said security camera footage obtained from the scene confirmed Nigerian soldiers firing at the peaceful protesters at Lekki plaza, prior to the army’s admission of its presence at the scene.

Despite, the global outrage that followed the shooting of #ENDSARS protesters at the Lekki toll gate the Nigerian Army has consistently denied culpability in the death of at least 10 protesters according to Amnesty International who were shot with live ammunition on October 20.

The ICIR chronicles major issues the Nigerian Army led by General Tukur Buratai have lied about to the Nigerian public from 2015 to date, despite damning evidence confronting their claims.

Was Abubakar Shekau ever dead?

On August 2016, the Nigerian Army announced that the Air force had killed a number of senior Boko Haram militants, including the terrorist group’s leader, Abubakar Shekau.

Colonel Sani Kukasheka Usman, the Army’s spokesperson at the time said in a statement that “their leader, so-called ‘Abubakar Shekau,’ is believed to be fatally wounded on his shoulders.”

Barely, a month later the wanted leader of the Nigerian Islamist group Boko Haram released a video message refuting the claim by the military that he was killed or badly wounded in an airstrike.

“Oh tyrants, I’m in a happy state, in good health and in safety,” Shekau announced in the 40-minute video posted to YouTube.

The Nigerian Army did not respond to the video or make any statement regarding their earlier claim that he was “fatally wounded”.

The statement follows a trail of similar assertions made by the Nigerian military about the Boko Haram leader in the past that were either false, misleading or lacked evidence.

In June 2013, Colonel Sagir Musa spokesperson of the Joint Task Force (JTF) elite fighting troops against insurgents in North East revealed that Shekau had been killed in a gun battle with JTF troops in one of their camps at Sambisa Forest on 30 June 2013.

“It is greatly believed that Shekau might have died between 25 July and 3 August 2013. “Shekau was mortally wounded in the encounter and was sneaked into Amitchide – a border community in Cameroon for treatment which he never recovered,” he said.

He said the top militant died of a gunshot wound received in an encounter with the JTF troops in one of their camps at Sambisa Forest on 30 June 2013.

“Shekau was mortally wounded in the encounter and was sneaked into Amitchide – a border community in Cameroon for treatment which he never recovered,” he said.

Chris Olukolade, Defence spokesperson at the time announced to journalists in September 2014 that the Nigerian army had killed a man posing as Boko Haram leader Abubakar Shekau, at the press briefing he also confirmed the death of Shekau.

To substantiate its claims, the Nigerian military showed an amateur video recording of the fighting in Konduga in which bodies were scattered across the streets.

Shi’ites killings cover-up

Between October 27 and October 29, 2018, the Nigerian Army admitted to killing six members of the Islamic sect, Islamic Movement in Nigeria, IMN, also known as Shi’ites during a protest march by the group at the outskirts of Abuja.

The Nigerian army said the protesting Shiite members were armed with stones and petrol bombs which they used to attack soldiers.

The military said the soldiers had used live ammunition after being provoked by the protesters, who blocked the road, hurled stones at them and tried to steal military equipment in an attack that left ten soldiers injured.

Contradicting the claims of the army, the New York Times investigation revealed that video evidence obtained from the scene of the shootings showed that the soldiers shot at civilians who were fleeing the scene.

“A close review of video from the largest and most deadly of the protests, as well as interviews with more than a dozen witnesses, clearly shows the military opening fire on unarmed demonstrators, sometimes shooting indiscriminately into the crowd at close range as people turned and tried to flee.

“Photos and videos recorded that day show at least 26 bodies. The group said it had collected a total of 49 bodies during the four days of protests,” the report stated.

According to New York Times, some of the corpses had bullet wounds at the back, indicating that they were shot while fleeing.

“After soldiers began to fire, they targeted protesters fleeing the chaos. Many of the injured were shot in the back or legs,” the report said.

IPOB massacre denial

On November 2016, Amnesty International released a report titled “Bullets Were Raining Everywhere”: Deadly Repression of Pro-Biafra Activists, which was based on the analysis of 87 videos, 122 photographs and 146 eye witness testimonies that the Nigerian Army had fired live ammunition to disperse Pro – Biafra protesters.

At least 60 members of the proscribed group, Indigenous People of the Biafra, IPOB were shot dead within two days as they prepared for the Biafra Remembrance Day which is held on May 30.

The report showed that stated that as over 1,000 members of the group gathered for a rally in Onitsha, Anambra State, before the Nigerian Army attacked their homes and a church where they were sleeping.

According to AI, the military took the bodies of people killed and injured in Onitsha and Asaba to the military barracks in Onitsha. Video footage also shows soldiers loading dead and wounded people into their Hilux van.

Sani Usman, a colonel, then acting director of the Nigerian army public relations, in a statement said that IPOB members savoured the use of violence that threatens the security of the country.

“The evidence of MASSOB/IPOB violent secessionist agitations is widely known across the national and international domains. During the protests More than five personnel of the Nigeria Police were killed, while several soldiers were wounded.

“Regardless, these acts of violence and disorder did not justify the level of force used against the whole assembly the military and other security agencies exercised maximum restraints despite the flurry of provocative and unjustifiable violence,” he said.

However, there was no evidence that was provided by the military on the soldiers wounded or policemen killed during the protests organised by IPOB members.

Nigeria now listed as ‘country of concern’ on international wildlife trafficking

A REPORT by the Environmental Investigation Agency (EIA) says the United States Department has reviewed Nigeria’s status from a previous category of a ‘focus country’ to a ‘country of concern’ due to illegal wildlife trafficking.

Cambodia and Cameroun also are on the same list.

The new status is a product of the US Task Force on Wildlife Trafficking, a body comprising of 17 federal departments and agencies.

The US government organisations work to implement the US National Strategy for Combating Wildlife Trafficking in order to improve responses and resilience to illegal trafficking of wildlife in selected key countries.

In 2019 fiscal year, the US government earmarked about $114 million to Combat Wildlife Trafficking (CWT) globally.

It deploys three major approaches to realising the CWT target – strengthening law enforcement, reducing demand and building international cooperation to make the trade less lucrative for perpetrators, 2020 End Wildlife Trafficking Strategic Review reads.

However, the study outcome, according to the EIA recognises “serious concerns that either high-level or systemic government involvement has occurred.”

The EIA attributed some of the data sources used to reach the conclusion on classified information from different sources, public data including data from the US state department.

“This review is yet further evidence that Nigeria, whose crime index and criminal market scores for wildlife crime were rated as the highest in Africa, must urgently strengthen its response to the wildlife criminals who continue to exploit weak law enforcement to devastate the region’s wildlife populations for the illegal trade,” it added.

Nigeria has been on the radar for illegal trafficking of wildlife and other endangered species despite being a signatory to CITES (the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora).

The nation is said to have played a major role in the illegal wildlife trade to consumer markets in Asia.

In April 2019, The ICIR reported how the Singaporean Authorities seized $51.6 million worth of pangolin scales. This was five days after a world record 12.9 tonnes of the animal scale, said to have originated from Nigeria was seized by the Singaporean Customs and other port officials.

2,500 kilograms of Pangolin scales and 600 kilograms of Ivory Tusks seized by the Vietnamese Customs Service, early February 2019 was said to have originated from Nigeria.

This seizure is different from 8, 200 kilograms of Pangolin scales and 2, 000 kilograms of Ivory Tusks seized by the Hong Kong Customs Service, and allegedly trafficked from the Apapa Seaport, Lagos.

“More disturbing is the fact that Nigeria is mentioned as the source in spite of our laudable conservation efforts which informed our leading the war against illegal wildlife trade in the West African Region,” Suleiman Zarma stated in a reaction.

He had argued that Pangolin was near extinction in Nigeria, thus the nation could not have been the country of source for the endangered animals.

Efforts to reach Sagir el-Mohammed, the Director of Press, Federal Ministry of Environment failed as he did not respond to his call and text message sent to his phone.

Tinubu commends plans by Sanwo-Olu to stop pensions for ex-governors

0

BOLA Ahmed Tinubu, former Governor of Lagos State, has commended plans by Babajide Sanwo-Olu, Lagos State governor to repeal the Lagos State law that would ensure life pensions for former governors and deputy governors.

Sanwo-Olu has said during the presentation of the 2021 budget to the Lagos State House of Assembly that he was going to repeal the Public Office Holder (Payment of Pension Law 2007), which makes provision for the payment of pension and other entitlements to former elected governors and their deputies.

The move, according to Sanwo-Olu will help to reduce the cost of governance in the State.

“Mr. Speaker and Honourable Members of the House, in light of keeping the costs of governance low and to signal selflessness in public service, we will be sending a draft executive bill to the House imminently for the repeal of the Public Office Holder (Payment of Pension Law 2007), which provides for payment of pension and other entitlements to former Governors and their Deputies,’’ he said.

“It is our firm belief that with dwindling revenues and the appurtenant inflationary growth rates, that we need to come up with innovative ways of keeping the costs of governance at a minimum while engendering a spirit of selflessness in public service.’’

Reacting, Tinubu has benefitted from the bogus pension law, described the move in a series of tweets as bold and courageous. He called on members of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in the State to support the governor towards that end.

“Congratulations to Governor Sanwo-Olu over the 2021 budget which he appropriately christened ‘Budget of Rekindled Hope’. This audacious and enterprising budget will empower our people and begin to rebuild Lagos State.

“In particular, I would also like to commend the governor for the plan to commence the repeal of the pension law giving pension packages to former governors and their deputies. This is a bold and courageous move by Mr. Governor and I wholeheartedly support him. I encourage all APC loyalists to do the same.”

The Pension Law

Before leaving office in 2007, the APC chieftain signed the Public Office Holder (Payment of Pension) Law No 11 official Gazette of Lagos State, 2007.

The law states that former governors of Lagos State are entitled to a house in Lagos and Abuja in any location of their choice, six brand new cars every three years, 100 percent of the basic salary of the serving governor, (N7.7m per annum) free health care for himself and members of his family.

The law also says a former governor will be entitled to furniture allowance, which is 300 percent of their annual basic salary (N23.3m); house maintenance allowance, which is 10 percent of basic salary (N778, 296); utility allowance, which is 20 percent of the salary (N1.5m) and car maintenance allowance, which is 30 percent of the annual basic salary (N2.3m).

Other benefits include an entertainment allowance, which is 10 percent of the basic salary (N778,296), and a personal assistant, who will earn 25 per cent of the governor’s annual basic salary (N1.9m), domestic workers comprising a cook, a steward, a gardener, and others whose appointments are pensionable.

It also stipulates that a former governor will be entitled to eight policemen and two officials of the Department of State Services for life, according to the Lagos law.

Since the country returned to democracy in 1999, Lagos has witnessed the administration of four governors. Tinubu who spent 8 years as governor of the State from 1999-2007 has benefited from the State Pension Law.

According to Punch, he currently has houses bought for him by the State in Ikoyi, Lagos and Asokoro, Abuja.

There are no details whether Babatunde Fashola, present Minister of Works and Housing, who took over from Tinubu and Akinwumi Ambode, a predecessor to the incumbent governor have benefitted from the Pension Law.

#ENDSARS: ICC confirms receipt of criminal complaint against Femi Falana

0

THE International Criminal Court (ICC), says it has received a criminal complaint against Femi Falana, a human rights lawyer, for his alleged role in the #ENDSARS protest.

Falana was sued before the court by Joseph Nwaegbu, a lawyer on behalf of his group Make Nigeria Better Initiative (MNBI).

The complaint dated 4th November 2020 and addressed to the office of Fatou Bensouda, the Prosecutor ICC, Nwaegbu wants Falana to be tried for allegedly instigating the #EndSARS protests, which he claimed, led to the killing of innocent citizens, destruction of property, among others.

While describing the protest as “mother of all protests in Nigeria”, the lawyer noted that the role played by Falana was not only ignoble but criminal.

He added that the youths whom he referred to as “misguided” acted based on Falana’s posture, character and utterances employed crude methods to illegally murder about 22 (Twenty Two) police officers in cold blood during the #EndSARS protests.

”On the recent #EndSARS protests which turned violent across the country, we beg to submit that the role played by Mr. Falana before, during, and after what observers described as “the mother of all protests in Nigeria” is not only ignoble but criminal,” he said.

“We have seen how the type of incitement spearheaded by Mr. Falana worked in Rwanda and other parts of the world and the resultant effect was genocide. In the case of Nigeria, the misguided youths who acted based on Falana’s posture, character and utterances employed crude methods to illegally murder about 22 (Twenty Two) police officers in cold blood during the #EndSARS protests that lasted between the period 3rd October 2020 till 21st October 2020.

“We strongly believe that Mr. Falana is a highly placed Nigerian citizen, senior lawyer, and politician that without the timely intervention of the ICC he will get away with justice in this case.

“At Oyigbo Police Station in Lagos alone, a total of 3 (Three) police officers were killed and roasted like Christmas goats with their facilities destroyed,” he said.

“It is our further submission that what Falana is doing gives room for suspicion that another brand of the terrorist group may be created to hide under the cover of “human rights activists” whilst sustaining the evils already bedeviling our people through the activities of the disbanded Islamic Movement in Nigeria (IMN), Boko Haram and Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB).

”Overall, we submit that prima facie cases of instigating violent protests that led to the killing of innocent citizens, wanton destruction of properties and other heinous crimes against humanity have been established against Femi Falana SAN vide this Criminal Complaint for which the ICC can investigate, prosecute and mete out appropriate sanctions to him.”

He urged the ICC Prosecutor to open an investigation of Femi Falana, SAN, on her own accord under Article 15 (1) of the Rome Statute;

Nwaegbu urged the ICC Prosecutor to compel Femi Falana SAN upon conviction under the Rome Statute to pay the sum of $2,000,000,000 (Two Billion US Dollars) as punitive damages for causing death, injury and maiming of several citizens as well as wanton destruction of public and private properties through his instigation of the violent #EndSARS Protests across Nigeria from the period 3rd October, 2020 till 21st October 2020.

ICC’s Response

In response, Mark P. Dillon, the ICC Head of Information and Evidence Unit, who said the ICC has acknowledged the receipt of the complaint, said the communication has entered the Registry of the Court and will be considered accordingly with the procedure and Rome Statute of the ICC.

He however added that the “acknowledgment letter does not mean an investigation has been opened, nor that an investigation will be opened by the Office of the Prosecutor.

“As soon as a decision is reached, we will inform you, in writing and provide you with reasons for this decision.”

Falana reacts

Falana has however described the allegations against him as an “obnoxious rejoinder” hurriedly crafted “to divert attention from the crime against humanity committed by those who opened fire on peaceful protesters in violation of international humanitarian law.”

He said the Socio-Economic and Rights Accountability Project (SERAP), one of his clients, had earlier submitted a petition to the ICC against the Nigerian Army “for the brutal killing of peaceful protesters in Nigeria.”

“Before then, a London based human rights group had submitted a petition over the massacre of 347 Shiites in December 2015 by the Nigerian army. The suspects in both petitions believe that I instigated both petitions.

“But the cheap ploy will not work as the ICC does not entertain frivolous petitions that are anchored on conjecture or speculation.

“After all, the ICC is not unaware of the fact that the suspects who committed arson and willful damage to private and public properties in Lagos state and other places during the #EndSARS protests have been arrested, investigated and arraigned in criminal courts.”

‎Angry Nigerians blast Buhari for calling for ‘equitable’ distribution of COVID-19 vaccine

PRESIDENT Muhammadu Buhari has come under attack from angry Nigerians after he called for an ‘equitable’ distribution of a COVID-19 vaccine.

The president has made the call in a statement issued by his Senior Special Assistant on Media and Publicity, Mr. Garba Shehu, after reports emerged that a vaccine developed by pharmaceutical firm, Pfizer, in collaboration with BioNTech SE, has a 90 percent potency against the dreaded disease.

The statement, titled ‘President Buhari welcomes COVID vaccine, calls for equitable distribution’, read, “President Muhammadu Buhari has welcomed the arrival of first effective coronavirus vaccine after a successful human trial phase.

“Reacting to news that the vaccine has recorded 90 percent effectiveness against the disease, the President described the development as a major milestone in medical advance but warned that the world must unite in facilitating the equitable access and distribution of these vaccines to protect people in all countries.

“President Buhari reiterated his earlier call that “only a Peoples Vaccine ‎with equality and solidarity at its core can protect all humanity and get our societies safely running again. A bold international agreement cannot wait.”

A presidential aide, Bashir Ahmed, posted the statement Twitter on November 9, via his Twitter ‎handle, @BashirAhmaad.

But Twitter users, who reacted to the statement, blasted the president for asking for an ‘equitable’ distribution of the vaccine.

Some of the Twitter users criticised Buhari for making the call when Nigerian universities, which ought to be research centres, ‎have remained closed for months due to his administration’s inability to resolve the strike embarked on by members of the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU).

Others noted that the call for equitable distribution was out of place since Nigeria did not play any role in the development of the vaccine‎.

Buhari was also attacked for rushing to accept the vaccine whereas the government usually ignore or reject claims of discovery of COVID-19 cures by Nigerian medical practitioners and researchers.

In some of the reactions to Buhari’s call for equitable distribution of the vaccine, a Twitter user going by the name, OkaniIfeanyiczar, tweeted, “What role did we play as a country? The universities that are supposed to be our research centres are on strike. This is what happens when we mistakenly elect someone that does not know the value of education.”

‎Suggesting that the vaccine could eventually become a means of self-enrichment for government officials, another Twitter user, Alpha_lonewalker, quipped, “They (government) will probably buy the vaccine in trillion of dollars, just wait and see.”

In the same vein, alluding to the recent discovery of undistributed COVID-19 palliative items in warehouses across the country, Oyelele Idowu wrote, “The vaccine that the government will hoard, divert for their family members alone. Please don’t waste Nigerian money on vaccine this time around! We know how you handle palliatives.”

Also reacting to the statement, Dr Abdul Giza said, “As it has proved to be 90 percent effective at this stage, I hope the Nigerian government will order and act with empathy in immediate distribution to the populace. Not sure hiding these vaccines will aid any political gains.”

“Time to cash out. Expected breaking news will be ‘FG earmarks …. billion dollars for COVID-19 vaccine, after 12 months. Fund meant for vaccine found in Ikoyi and private account. End of story. They (government) spent 3 trillion on COVID-19 indomie. Corruption personified,” yet another ‎Twitter user, Realist, stated.

Atagana Great, while reacting to the President’s call for equitable distribution of the vaccine, observed, “Nigeria is so blessed with wealth to fund world class universities that can rival that of Cambridge, Oxford or MIT. What do we use our funds for? Oh yes share it corruptly within our selfish leaders.”

Also reacting to the statement, A Twitter user that goes by the moniker Dr. DoGood‎, noted, “When will Nigeria join the league of nations fighting to produce these vaccines? Imagine how much that will add to our economy. Our medical research institutions are lying waste without proper funding. Sit up Nigerian government, sit up!!”

“We (Nigeria) are overly dependent on imported expertise and products which has frustrated optimisation of our ingenuity,” Reali‎st further observed.

Chukwunyelu!, while reacting to the President’s statement, noted that the Buhari-led Federal Government has been following the bandwagon on the global stage. He said, “One of the biggest bane of globalism and multilateralism ‎is that it de-emphasises local ingenuity and industry. I now understand why this government (Buhari administration) hurriedly congratulated Biden (Democratic Party candidate in United States presidential election). Copying and pasting everything we find on the global scene, especially towards COVID, is amusing.”

Also criticising Buhari for asking for equitable distribution of the vaccine, a Twitter user, Iyanuoluwa Bamidele, said, “Can you help‎ us inform @MBuhari of ASUU strike? ASUU has been on strike for more than 7 months yet the same Federal Government has been silent throughout the strike.”

Also reacting to the development, a Twitter user, Mr Dotts, ‎said, “We could have played a role in discovering a coronavirus vaccine but no investment in first class education and research. Only oil and cows. Embezzlement galore. Capital projects of no economic relevance and borrowing spree for personal ego and Northern development. Rubbish.”

Faulting the Federal Government’s preference for foreign products, while neglecting home-grown solutions, Inah Joseph Odey, in his reaction, claimed, “A drug was developed by a team of researchers and tested on COVID-19 patients in Plateau State, and it worked. I wonder why this hasn’t been announced or gotten attention.”

In another reaction to the statement, Omoakin ‎tweeted, “Hahaha! Africa is always in a parasitic position in any global challenges. We need people with self-esteem and the right credentials to rule this country full of brilliant people.”

In his reaction, Dr. Oladipo Gideon Oludare wondered whether Buhari tried to find out the side effects of the vaccine before talking about its distribution.

A polio vaccine earlier developed by Pfizer and administered on many children in Kano caused serious health damage to the victims.

Gideon in a tweet argued, “90 percent effective against COVID-19 is excellent, but what about the side effects that could result from the administration of the vaccine?”

‎Abiodun Ayinde suggested that Buhari jumped the gun by talking about the distribution of the vaccine even before those who funded the research development.

“I laugh… Did you read what Pfizer said? Even those people that bankrolled the research into the drug have not talked about the distribution of 90 percent efficient drug,” he tweeted while reacting to the statement on Bashir Umar’s Twitter handle.

Pfizer had on November 9 disclosed that the experimental vaccine was more than 90 percent ‎effective in preventing COVID-19 based on data from ongoing phase three trials. ‎

Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of Pfizer, Albert Bourla, in a statement, said they have so far found no serious safety concerns with the vaccine.

The drug-makers ‎have indicated their intention to seek emergency use authorisation from the United States government later in November 2020.

However, so far, Pfizer and BioNTech ‎are yet to provide answers to some questions concerning the vaccine, including how long the drug will provide protection against the coronavirus disease.

Emefiele broke the law to freeze accounts of #EndSARS protesters, letter from bank confirms

0

GODWIN Emefiele, the Governor of Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) violated extant regulatory procedure when he ordered 20 bank accounts owned by #EndSARS campaigners be frozen without obtaining a court order, a letter by Access Bank has confirmed.

According to reports, in the letter from Access Bank to Gatefield Limited, which had his account frozen alongside 19 other #EndSARS campaigners, it was confirmed that CBN directed the suspension of the accounts on October 26, a week before the apex bank got an ex-parte order to do so from a Federal High Court in Abuja, presided by Justice Ahmed Mohammed.

Gatefield Limited, a media rights organizations had raised funds to support journalists reporting the happenings of the #EndSARS protests that carried on for 12 consecutive days.

In defending its apparent clampdown on #EndSARS protesters, CBN in its written address to the court accused the protesters of financing terrorism, alleging that the transactions in the frozen accounts can cause ‘economic and security harm’.

There is no provision in the law that allows for any bank to effect a post-no-debit order on any customer’s account without a court order. In a 2019 case between Guaranty Trust Bank (GTB) and a customer identified as Akinsiku Adedamola, the Court of Appeal held that: “Before freezing customer’s account or placing any form of restrain on any Bank account, a bank must be satisfied that there is an order of court.

The court further stated that: “Our financial institutions must not be complacent, reticent and toothless in the face of brazen and reckless violence to the rights of their customers. Whenever there is a specific provision regulating the procedure of doing a particular act, that procedure must be followed.”

Emefiele simply didn’t follow the provisions of the law and also concealed the fact that the 20 frozen bank accounts were owned by persons involved in the #EndSARS protests from the court.

There have been several attempts by the Federal Government to clamp down on frontline #EndSARS protesters over the past week, following the shooting of peaceful protesters by officers of the Nigerian Army at Lekki Toll Gate Plaza on October 20.

Modupe Odele, one of the lawyers who organised legal aid for the protesters had her international passport seized by the Nigerian Immigration Service (NIS) while she tried leaving the country for the Maldives.

There have also been calls by the government for social media regulation. Leading the call is Lai Mohammed, Minister of Information and Culture who on Tuesday, October 27, used the #EndSARS protests as justification to make yet another push for social media regulation in the country.

SEVERAL young Nigerian journalists and activists have been selected for various awards in this year’s Future Awards Africa Prize for their various contributions to the society.

Among them is Adejumo Kabir, a reporter with Premium Times, who was nominated for the Africa Prize for journalism category in the “Future Awards 2020.

Kabir, according to the information seen by The ICIR on the Future Award Africa website was nominated for exposing sharp practices “in governance, health, politics and the economy with real-world consequences. After his report on how the Nigerian Army abandoned families of slain soldiers, authorities reached out to the neglected families and began to process their pay.”

It further added that “Beyond training young journalists on the best practices in investigative journalism, he risked his life journeying by sea from Nigeria to the Benin Republic to expose how security operatives breached border closure during the pandemic and explained why Nigeria continues to have an increase in the number of coronavirus cases. Adejumo Kabir has put the truth above political affiliations, the concerns of his superiors and his own life. What could be more admirable than that?”

Others nominated in this category are Aisha Salaudeen, Aneta Felix Abdulbaqi Jari, Aanu Adeoye, Solomon Elusoji, and Victoria Sanusi.

Also nominated is Wilson Atumeyi, the Chief Executive Officer of Water With Development (WaterWide). He was selected for the 2020 Future Awards Africa Prize for Activism.

He was selected alongside 6 other young Nigerians who have committed their time and efforts to advocate for better life opportunities for all Nigerians across various socioeconomic areas.

WaterWide which has been tracking government spending and international aid for Water, Sanitation and Hygiene (WASH) to ensure transparency, accountability and proper implementation and completion of WASH projects in rural communities across Nigeria, was founded in 2019 with the goal of improving access to safe water, sanitation and hygiene facilities for people living in marginalised communities.

The nongovernmental organization is working towards the achievement of Goal 6 (“Ensure availability and sustainable management of water and sanitation for all”) of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

Speaking on this achievement, Wilson Atumeyi said that “over the past year, working on solving the water and sanitation challenges has been a thing of pain and pleasure. I derive pleasure in the work I do but so much pain when I see the challenges facing people in marginalised communities.”

“Having seen the caliber of great young Nigerians that have been nominated for this category, I am truly humbled, excited and feel honored. These other young Nigerians have achieved great feats in their areas of focus and I am glad to have been nominated alongside them. I dedicate this nomination to all of WaterWide’s 1,293 volunteers across the nation, working tirelessly to ensure that there is access to safe water and sanitation for all, especially in marginalised communities, and also to my family and friends for their financial and professional support,” he said.

Other Nigerian youths that were nominated in this category include Hassana Umoru Maina, Hajara Kabeer Abdulfatah, Aghogho Odibo, Richard Akuson, Kelechukwu Nwachukwu Lucky, and Adenike Titilope Oladosu.

The Future Awards Africa, also popularly known as The Future Awards, are a set of awards given by The Future Project (TFP), a social enterprise set up with a strong, practical commitment to human and capital development, especially in Africa.

Despite public outcries, Akeredolu backs CBN for freezing #ENDSARS protesters’ accounts

DESPITE public outcries, Rotimi Akeredolu, governor of Ondo State, has backed the action of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) freezing bank accounts belonging to #EndSARS promoters.

“Speaking very honestly, I don’t see anything wrong in it,” the governor said while appearing on Channels Television’s Sunrise Daily on Wednesday.

“If for instance, my account was frozen, what would I do? All I would do is go back to court to explain. Even politicians, their accounts are sometimes frozen. You have to go to court and explain. And at the end of the day, the court will say, ‘Leave the account. The account should be de-frozen’ and you take your money back,” he added.

Akeredolu who downplayed insinuations that the protesters are being charged for a treasonable offence stated that the owners of the accounts should justify the money in their accounts.

“If your account is frozen, you justify why the money was there. You come to explain what use you have put this money in. If it is that ‘Okay, we used this money to pay this caterer to give food to these boys when they were there. We spent money before the hoodlums took over,’ it will be explained, people will know and the accounts will be de-frozen.

“It is just that we (CBN) suspected this account then the owner of the account will explain,” he said, noting stressing that it “is not a conclusion that those accounts were used for acts of treason.”

CBN Court Order

Last week, an Abuja federal high court presided by Ahmed Mohammed, granted the request of the CBN to freeze the accounts of 19 individuals and a public affairs company linked to the #EndSARS protests.

The court order addressed to the head offices of Access Bank, Fidelity Bank, First Bank Nigeria, Guaranty Trust Bank, United Bank of Africa, and Zenith Bank, directed the banks to freeze forthwith all transactions on the 20 accounts on the list annexed to the CBN’s application as Exhibit A and all other bank accounts of the defendants/respondents for a period of 180 days pending the outcome of investigation and inquiry currently being conducted by the Central Bank of Nigeria.

The affected individuals include Bolatito Racheal Oduala, Chima David Ibebunjoh, Mary Doose Kpengwa, Saadat Temitope Bibi, Bassey Victor Israel, Wisdom Busaosowo Obi, Nicholas Ikhalea Osazele, Ebere Idibie, Akintomide Lanre Yusuf, Uhuo Ezenwanyi Promise and Mosopefoluwa Odeseye.

Others are Adegoke Pamilerin Yusif. Umoh Grace Ekanem, Babatunde Victor Segun, Mulu Louis Teghenan, Mary Oshifowora, Winifred Akpevweoghene Jacob, Victor Solomon, Idunu A. Williams, and Gatefield Nigeria Limited.
