An attack by the Boko Haram terrorist group on troops of the Nigerian military at Kangarwa Village in northern Borno State on Monday night has left one soldier and thirteen terrorists dead.

The incident was confirmed in two separate statements issued by the spokespersons of the Nigeria Army and the Air Force, Sani Usman and Ayodele Famuyiwa respectively.

The attack which was repelled by a combination of Nigeria Air Force aircraft and Nigerian Army officials also saw three other soldiers injured.

Monday’s attack came at about the time the burial of five soldiers, including Abu Ali – a lieutenant colonel who had been commended by the army hierarchy for his role in the war – was taking place at the military cemetery in Abuja.

Famuyiwa, the Air Force spokesman,  stated that “the Nigerian Air Force (NAF) fighter aircraft yesterday repelled attack by the Boko Haram Terrorists on own ground troops at Kangarwa in northern Borno State.”

“Following the report of the attack, 3 x fighter jets and a reconnaissance aircraft were immediately deployed for the operation.

“While the fighter aircrafts were scrambled to repel the attack, the Intelligence, Surveillance and Reconnaissance (ISR) aircraft was deployed to give guidance to ground troops on the position equipment and strength of the BHTs.”

Famuyiwa added that “the operation which started at about 1700 hours (5pm) continued till late evening at about 1915 hours (7:15pm) before the attack was successfully repelled.”

The army spokesman, Usman, explained that the Boko Haram attack was on troops of 119 Task Force Battalion, 8 Division of the Nigerian Army.

He said the troops were able to “neutralize 13 of the attacking Boko Haram terrorists,” adding that “Unfortunately, one soldier paid the supreme price during the encounter, while 3 soldiers were wounded in action.”

Usman said the troops had to call for air support as the attack dragged on.

“The offensive which began at about 4.00pm and lasted for roughly four hours, necessitated the troops calling for air support to which the Nigerian Air Force (NAF) promptly responded by dispatching an Intelligence Surveillance and reconnaissance (ISR) aircraft and a Ground Attack Fighter Aircraft in support of the ground offensive.”, he said.

He said the attack ended after some of the insurgents fled with gunshot wounds, abandoning their weapons and other belongings.

“The troops also neutralized 2 Hilux vehicles belonging to the insurgents and recovered the following: a Hilux vehicle, 1 Browning Machine Gun (BMG), 1 Anti-Aircraft Gun (AAG), 2 General Purpose Machine Guns (GPMG), 1 Light Machine Gun (LMG), 2 Rocket Propelled Guns Seven (RPG 7) tubes and bombs, 5 AK-47 Rifles and 550 Rounds of Anti-Aircraft Gun ammunition”, Usman stated.

US In Historic Presidential Election

After more than a year of acrimonious campaigns, Americans are set to elect a new president in a few hours.

It is a historic election in many ways. It is the first time a woman is elected presidential nominee of a major political party. Hillary Clinton, former First Lady and former Secretary of State, broke the glass ceiling when she was elected Presidential candidate of the Democratic Party.

The race is between her and Donald Trump, the billionaire Republican candidate who defied every prediction to win the nomination of the Republican Party. His abrasive and vulgar personality, which has never been witnessed in any US presidential election, unnerved many; including members of his party during the months the campaign lasted.

Trump, who has never been a politician, was until now, a ‘successful’ business man and billionaire, running chains of businesses around the world; no one gave him a chance of making it even to the Republican primaries.

But by the time of the primaries, Trump was the last man standing out of more than twelve Republican candidates that indicated interest.

This year’s campaign is probably the most polarising campaign ever in the history of the country. There is a huge racial division in the country, and the Republican candidate has successfully exploited that to his advantage.

This election has also witnessed what many analysts believe has been the dirtiest campaign ever in the US, characterized by name-callings and mudslinging.

Donald Trump speared no punches against his opponent, calling Clinton names like “crooked Hilary”, “liar”, “Criminal”; and even threatened during a presidential debate to jail her if he wins the presidency.

Clinton, described by Trump as a fighter who never gives up, had also hit back at the Republic candidate describing him as “unfit” to occupy the oval office. She called him a “bully” and a “racist” on numerous occasions, and a man who can be “baited with a tweet”.

Both candidates have been involved in series of scandals ranging from Clinton’s use of a private e-mail server to communicate important, classified information during her time as Secretary of State, to Trump’s tax evasion, which saw him rake-in billions of dollars in profit without paying a dime in taxes, as well as his obscene and vulgar comments especially about women.

But after months and weeks and days of bitter campaigning, the real battle – which has already started in many states – is less than 24 hours away.

A record number of Americans – more than 46m – have voted early by post or at polling stations.

Not a few political analysts and scholars in the US and around the world agree that a lot is at stake in this election.

Trump, for instance, has always criticized the US’ approach to the crises in the Middle East which had triggered massive immigration challenges across Europe.

He has openly stated that United States, under his watch, would not accept any migrant from Syria or Iraq, describing them all as Islamic extremists.

The Republican candidate also vowed to deport all illegal migrants in the US, and build a wall across the US-Mexico border. He also said Muslims would be banned from entering the US once he becomes president.

Clinton, on the other hand, has promised a more inclusive government, where everyone would be carried along, Muslims, Christians, Hispanics, Latinos, African-Americans and Migrants alike.

“America would build bridges not walls,” she usually says at every campaign rally.

Both Clinton and Trump have been holding rallies in the battleground states of North Carolina, Pennsylvania and Michigan; Clinton urging voters to support a “hopeful, inclusive, big-hearted America”, and Trump telling his supporters to vote for a change so as “to beat the corrupt system” and “drain the swamp in Washington.

Various polls by different media organisations in the US gave Clinton a four-point lead over Trump, and there are signs of a high turnout among Hispanic voters, which is believed to favour the former American first lady.

At a star-studded event in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, Clinton was joined on stage by celebrities Bruce Springsteen and Jon Bon Jovi as well as her husband Bill, President Obama and his wife Michelle.

Her final campaign stop will be a midnight “get out the vote” event in Raleigh, North Carolina, which is due to feature Lady Gaga.

Earlier in a radio interview, Clinton had said that if she won she would call Trump and hoped he would play a “constructive role” in helping to bring the country together.

However, at his rally in Scranton in the same state, Trump insisted the momentum was with his campaign.

He had earlier told supporters in Florida that he was “not a politician” and that they were his “only special interest”.

He described Clinton as the “most corrupt person ever to seek the presidency”.

Meanwhile, Trump’s campaign manager, Kellyanne Conway, tried to launder his principal’s international image in a BBC interview on Monday.

She said criticism from abroad “does not reflect why Donald Trump is running and who he would be on the global stage”.

French President, Francois Hollande has said the billionaire made him “want to retch”.

Trump has, among other things, been accused of stoking xenophobic sentiment after vowing to ban Muslims from entering the US, describing Mexicans as “rapists” and saying he would build a wall along the US southern border to stop illegal immigration.

However, Trump seem to have a strong admirer and supporter in Russian President, Vladmir Putin, whom he had pledged to “get along well” with if he becomes president.

Saraki’s Trial Continues At CCT

The trial of Senate President Bukola Saraki at the Code of Conduct Tribunal, CCT, on allegations of false assets declaration continued on Monday in Abuja.

At the resumption of proceedings, prosecution witness, Michael Wetkas, an official of the EFCC, told the Tribunal that the manner the Senate President repaid a loan of N380 million in 2007, was in contravention of the country’s Money Laundering Act.

He made the remarks during cross examination by, defense counsel, Paul Usoro, SAN.

Usoro asked the witness whether he had any evidence to suggest that the Saraki repaid the loan from the account of the Kwara State government since he had earlier told the court that he did not investigate Kwara State Government account.

Wetkas replied that investigations carried out by his team revealed that  the manner the loan was repaid contravened the Money Laundering Act and that was why the third charge of abuse of office was proferred against the defendant.

He revealed that the immediate two declarations made by the defendant after purchasing the property (at Ikoyi, Lagos) indicated that the property was purchased through bank loans while the declaration he made four years after (on 3rd of June, 2011) indicated that the property was acquired through the proceeds of sales of rice and sugar.

According to Wetkas, “the loan of N380m was taken to purchase one of the properties (at N256.3m) and there was 12% charge on the property which translated to N12.8m.”

“The loan was to be paid in five equal tranches on quarterly basis. The first payment of N81m was done on 02/05/2007. The second was N80m on 02/08/2007. The third was N79m on 02/11/2007. The fourth was N78m on 01/02/2008 and the fifth was N77m paid on 02/05/2008”, Wetkast said.

The trial continues on Tuesday with the defense expected to conclude the cross examination of the first prosecution witness.

Former Chairman of the House of Representatives Committee on Appropriations, Abdulmumin Jibrin, has gone on exile, vowing never to return to Nigeria until his safety could be guaranteed.

The Suspended lawmaker made this known on Monday during an interview with a London-based television station. He had traveled to the UK to receive an award by the ‘African Voice’, a London based newspaper, as well as to take his anti-corruption campaign to international community.

Jibrin said that he decided to flee the country due to numerous threats on his life and those of his family members.

He added that that the prolonged silence of President Muhammadu Buhari over the corruption scandal in the House of Representatives was no longer healthy.

“The situation currently at hand is different from the initial stage of the crisis. The silence of the presidency is no longer sending the right message to Nigerians and the international community,” Jibrin said

He also disclosed that he had written the President seeking audience to brief him about the monumental fraud in the 2016 budget, as well as provide him with some vital information on how to check corruption in the House and further fraud in budget process and reform the House for the good of our country.

Jibrin stated that over 2,000 fraudulent projects worth over N284 billion were inserted into 2016 budget, a development he described as unprecedented in the Nation’s history.

He however exonerated himself of any wrongdoing in the appropriation process, maintaining that for the 5 years he had been a member of the House, he had never abused his office or corruptly enriched himself.

The Kano lawmaker reiterated his resolve to continue with the anti-corruption campaign, adding that he would now take the campaign to the international stage by reaching out to foreign governments, parliaments, media, civil society groups and Nigerians in Diaspora, to press for the arrest and prosecution of Speaker Yakubu Dogara, Lasun, Doguwa, Ogor and other members of the corrupt cabal in the House of Representatives.

Fayose’s Frozen Account: Court Rules December 2

Governor Ayodele Fayose of Ekiti State

The Ado-Ekiti branch of the Federal High Court has fixed December 2 for judgement on the freezing of Governor Ayo Fayose’s Zenith Bank accounts by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC.

Justice Taiwo Taiwo’s order on Monday, in Ado Ekiti, followed the adoption of written addresses and other evidences by parties involved in the suit.

Two of the Governor’s Zenith bank accounts were frozen by the EFCC on June 20 following investigations into an allegation of corruption against the governor and some of his aides.

As a result, Fayose’s counsel, Mike Ozekhome, SAN, approached the court asking it to order the first respondent, EFCC, and the second respondent, Zenith Bank, to immediately lift the freeze order on the accounts.

Ozekhome described the action of the EFCC in freezing Governor Fayose’s personal bank accounts as illegal, unconstitutional and an infringement on the Fundamental Rights of his client.

The senior advocate stated that the EFCC had contravened Section 308 of the 1999 Constitution of the Federal Republic of NIgeria, as amended which granted immunity to a sitting governor against prosecuting in either civil or criminal matters.

Ozekhome also wants the court to award damages in favour of his client.

However, counsel to EFCC, Rotimi Oyedepo, told the court that the commission had acted within its statutory and constitutional powers as provided for in Section 6(5)(b) of the Money Laundering Prohibition Act,2011.

He stated that every action or step taken against the applicant by the commission was done in accordance to Sections 19, 34 of the EFCC Establishment Act.

“By the provision of these sections, EFCC has power to instruct Zenith Bank to place a “Stop Order” on the account suspected to be proceeds of alleged crime,” he said.

It would be recalled that the EFCC ordered the freezing of Fayose’s account on the allegations that he had collected huge sums of money from the former National Security Adviser, Sambo Dasuki, who is currently in custody for corruption.

The anti-graft agency said the money was handed over to Fayose through the former minister of State for defence, Musiliu Obanikoro, who is currently aiding the commission in its investigations.

Obanikoro was over the weekend granted administrative bail by the EFCC after spending several days in custody, and eventually returning the sum of N100 million to government coffers.

An ad-hoc committee of the House of Representatives’ which is investigating the allegation of illegal payment made by the Comptroller-General of the Nigerian Customs Service, NCS, Hammed Ali, has threatened to issue a warrant for his arrest if he refused to appear in person before the panel.

The committee headed by Adekunle Abdulkadir, had invited the Customs CG to explain why the service paid the sum of N250 million to an unlicensed firm as commission for insurance cover.

However, Ali did not appear in person, but sent Austin Warikoru, the Assistant Comptroller General in charge of resource development, to represent him.

Not satisfied with the CGs action, the committee turned Warikoru back, directing him to inform the Customs CG that he must appear in person on November 14 or the lawmakers would issue an arrest warrant on him.

The committee chair added that his committee had uncovered 57 other irregularities in payment of millions of naira allegedly by Customs to “non-existent insurance firms”, warning that no excuse would be entertained from the comptroller general.

Recall that last week, the House of Reps probe panel revealed that the sum of N250million commission on insurance cover was paid to Fortis Insurance.

However, the insurance company denied any such transaction with the Customs.

Its managing director, Lawrence Dafiode, in a letter to the panel, said that the firm was duly licensed in 2010 contrary to information available to the committee.

President, Muhammadu Buhari is set to arrive in Benin city, the Edo state capital, on a two-day working visit.

The presidential visit is coming shortly after a valedictory session was held for the out-going Governor of Edo state, Adams Oshiomhole, on Sunday.

This is likely the last time Oshiomhole will be hosting President Buhari as Governor of Edo state before leaving office on November 12.

APC National Chairman, John Oyegun, led other dignitaries and party faithful to receive the president at the Benin Airport.

Also, minister of transport, Rotimi Amaechi and the outgoing Edo State deputy governor Pius Odubu, as well as so service commanders, were seen at the airport..

The president, during the visit, is expected to commission the central hospital and the new Siluko road constructed by the Oshiomole administration.

It is also expected that the president will pay a visit to the palace of the newly-crowned Oba of Benin.

Recall that President Buhari was in Benin recently to campaign for the All Progressives Congress, APC, ahead of the state governorship election in Edo state, which saw Governor Elect Godwin Obaseki, emerge as winner.

Obaseki’s opponent in the election, Osagie Ize-Iyanmu, is however contesting the outcome of the election, saying he should be declared winner of the exercise.

A United Kingdom-based newspaper, the African Voice, has honoured Abdulmumin Jibrin, the suspended former Chairman of the House of Representatives Committee on appropriation, with the African Voice Leadership in Legislative Governance Award by African Voice.

Jibrin was recognized for his commitment to legislative duties and fight against corrupt.

Publisher and editor-in-chief of the newspaper, Mike Abiola, said the award seeks to appreciate individuals who have shown dedication to developing their countries.

“The African Voice Leadership in Governance Awards recognises African leaders who have shown dedication to developing their state/countries, by demonstrating exemplary leadership,” Abiola said in a statement.

“The attention of the international community has been drawn to your commitment to the people of Nigeria and Kano state in particular. Your effort in helping to eradicate corruption is commendable,” he added.

The 20th edition of the Awards Investiture ceremony took place in London on November 5 and was attended by foreign and commonwealth officials, African diplomats in the UK, British politicians, members of parliament and influential business leaders.

Accepting the award, Jibrin said it was a huge morale booster for him.

He said: “Thank you, African Voice Newspaper for this award. The award is a huge morale booster because it is coming at a very difficult and challenging period.

“It’s a period I had to leave my post as appropriations chairman of the house of representatives, suspended through subterranean means by Speaker Yakubu Dogara and received several threats to my life by the highly placed public officials I accused of corruption.

Jibrin maintained that the only crime for which he was removed as committee head and subsequently suspended was because he disagreed “with some corrupt leaders of the house including the Speaker over the 2016 budget fraud and insisting that the right thing must be done.”

He reiterated that “Despite the difficulties I am going through, I will never be cowed into silence. I assure you I will never retreat from this worthy line of action.

“I shall remain committed to the fight against corruption in the House of Representatives and Nigeria as a whole,” he said.

The Kano State lawmaker dedicated the award to the “millions of Nigerians home and abroad who are suffering today because of the massive theft of our common wealth, budget fraud and monumental corruption in the house of representatives which assumed an unprecedented dimension under the leadership of speaker Yakubu Dogara.”

Again, FBI Clears Clinton As Trump Kicks

0

again-fbi-clears-clinton-as-trump-kicks

The United States’ Federal Bureau of Investigation, FBI, has once again exonerated Hilary Clinton of any crime with regards to the latest scrutiny of a new set of emails linked to the former secretary of state.

FBI director, James Comey, in a letter to the US congress on Sunday, stated that a fresh inquiry into the Democratic candidate’s communications found nothing to change the bureau’s conclusion earlier in the summer.

However, Donald Trump has cried foul, accusing the FBI of impropriety and claiming it was impossible for the agency to have scrutinized 650,000 emails in just eight days.

“Right now she’s being protected by a rigged system. It’s a totally rigged system. I’ve been saying it for a long time,” he told supporters in Sterling Heights, Michigan.

“Hillary Clinton is guilty, she knows it, the FBI knows it, the people know it and now it’s up to the American people to deliver justice at the ballot box on November 8,” he added.

The Clinton campaign, however said it was “glad” the lingering issue had been resolved.

The dramatic twist lifted a cloud from the former US first lady’s campaign as the final day of the marathon US election race loomed.

Latest opinion polls on Sunday, before news broke of the FBI announcement, gave Clinton a four to five-point lead over Trump.

While Clinton herself did not address the FBI director’s letter on the trail, her campaign said it was always confident she would be cleared.

In Manchester, New Hampshire, on Sunday, she said the country was facing “a moment of reckoning” and Americans must choose between “division and unity”.

Recall that in July, the FBI said Clinton had been “extremely careless” to handle classified material on a private email server as secretary of state from 2009-13, but it had found no evidence she committed a crime.

However, 11 days before the election, FBI director James Comey pitched the presidential race into turmoil by announcing a newly discovered batch of Clinton emails would be investigated.

The bombshell infuriated the Clinton camp, but threw a lifeline to a Trump campaign that had been receding in the polls.

Both candidates are set for a tour of battleground states on Monday, in a last-ditch dash for votes.

Clinton starts the day in Michigan, a traditional Rust Belt, Democratic stronghold that has been heavily targeted by Trump in recent days.

She will then head to Philadelphia where she will be joined by President Barack Obama, First Lady Michelle Obama and husband Bill Clinton.

FG To Review Price Of Petrol

fg-to-review-price-of-petrol

The Federal Government has said that it would review the pricing template for Premium Motor Spirit, PMS, commonly known as petrol, in order to avoid an increase in the price of the product.

Ibe Kachikwu, Minister of State for Petroleum Resources, said this over the weekend in Abuja, during an award ceremony by the Petroleum Products Pricing Regulatory Agency, PPPRA, wing of the Petroleum and Natural Gas Senior Staff Association of Nigeria, PENGASSAN.

The minister said that the review would be done in conjunction with oil marketers and other stakeholders, so as to cushion the effect of rising foreign exchange rates and the dwindling value of the naira on the price of petrol.

Kachikwu also denied knowledge of the fact that fueling stations belonging to the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation, NNPC, has increased the pump price of PMS from N141 to N145 per litre, which is the maximum price allowed by government.

He said he would meet with management of the corporation to find out the reason for the increase.

“I am not aware that the NNPC has increased price. I need to look into that, it is a bit of surprise for me, because there are processes in doing this,” he said/

On the issue of the petrol price template, Kachikwu said that the review would eliminate some charges that are attributable to the Federal Government so that the price would remain as it is at present.

He said:‎ “One of the things I think we had hoped to do, which we would still do, before we embark on any price increase is to work on those templates.

“There are still areas that are within the government controlled aspects, (like) payments to the Ministry of Transport and the rest, (as well as) payments to the Nigerian Ports Authority, NPA.

“We are working on the possibility of being able to shift that out so that we can still modulate the prices within where it is right now.

“But I would hold a conversation with the industry and see how it is going … I think PPPRA is the one that has the authority to say it is time the templates does justify some level of movement, otherwise you have a crisis of individual decisions on pricing.”

The minister also threw light on the meeting between President Muhammadu Buhari and stakeholders from the Niger Delta region.

He said that the meeting was part of efforts aimed at bringing lasting peace to the oil-rich region.

“The President is committed to finding solutions to these problems; but he is committed to finding lasting solutions, not one-offs that would come to haunt us again afterwards.

“That is why he is taking his time to understand how these people operate,” Kachilwu said.
