President Muhammadu Buhari on Friday reiterated the federal government’s resolve to negotiate with Boko Haram for the safe return of abducted Chibok school girls, saying their release will be one his greatest achievements as president.

He, however, warned that he will not “fall for the antics of fraudsters” demanding money from the government to help negotiate the release.

The President made this known when he received the Primate and Archbishops of the Church of Nigeria (Anglican Communion) at the State House.

He insisted that government would vet anyone claiming to hold the girls before agreeing to negotiate.

President Buhari also assured that government will pay attention to the clean-up of Ogoniland.

“We inherited the United Nations Environmental Project report from the previous administration. We decided it needed urgent attention, in spite of the economic crunch because of our concern for the welfare and environmental comfort of the people of Ogoniland,” the statement quoted the President.

Leader of the delegation and Primate of the Church of Nigeria (Anglican Communion), Most Rev Nicholas Okoh, promised the support of the church for government’s efforts in securing and improving the welfare of Nigerians.

ijaw youth council....

The Ijaw Youths Council, IYC, has condemned the rising insecurity in the Niger Delta which has led to loss of lives and called on President Muhammadu Buhari to take over on-going peace talks.

In a statement by the IYC Spokesman, Eric Omare, in Yenagoa on Friday, the youth group noted that the insecurity in the region is rapidly deteriorating and seem to be getting out of control.

The group condemned the reported cases of attacks and killing of soldiers and civilians, and the destruction of oil facilities in Ogbeinbiri, Bayelsa State and Forcados export line, Delta state. The statement called on President Muhammad Buhari to personally take over the Niger Delta peace process to ensure that peace returns to the region.

“We in strong words condemn this senseless killing of soldiers and civilians that were working in the houseboat. We condemn this act of wickedness as it would only complicate an already delicate security situation. The IYC is of the view that to make the process effective and produce the required result, President Buhari must personally take charge and provide leadership.”

The youth group also called on the governors of the Niger Delta states to work together with community and youth leaders in the region to seek ways of returning peace to the area.

The IYC also passionately called on the Niger Delta Avengers and other militant groups and individuals to give peace a chance as the continuous bombing of oil facilities is not in the interest of the Niger Delta people.

The Minister of Labour and Employment, Chris Ngige has directed banks, insurance and financial institutions to suspend the on-going retrenchment in the sector.

This is contained in a statement made available to the media in Abuja on Friday.

He said the directive must be complied with pending the outcome of the conciliatory meetings in the industry.

The Minister said that the decision was based on the fact that the continued retrenchment in the financial sector was jeopardising the outcome of the mediatory processes undertaken by the ministry.

“All the retrenchments and redundancies done in the last four months, and all proposed ones should be put on hold pending the outcome of the proposed stakeholders’ summit for the banking, insurance and financial institutions’ employers and employees, slated for the first week of July 2,’’ the statement read.

Obasanjo and Buhari In Closed-Door Meeting

Buhari-Obasanjo....

President Muhammadu Buhari has met with former President Olusegun Obasanjo behind closed doors at the statehouse in Abuja on Friday, June 3, 2016.

Reasons for the visit and details of the meeting were not known as at press time, but sources say it may not be unconnected with recent developments in the Niger-Delta region of the country where a new militant group, the Niger Delta Avengers, has been blowing up oil and gas installations leading to a huge drop in the Nation’s crude oil production.

President Buhari on Thursday called off his planned visit to River State to flag off the UNEP recommended cleaning up of Ogoniland. There were speculations that the visit was cancelled due to rising tension over renewed attacks by militants. Buhari was represented at the historic event by Vice President Yemi Osinbajo.

Former President Obasanjo had a running battle with militants during his tenure between 1999 and 2007.

Angolan President Names Daughter Head Of State Oil Company

Angola’s President, Jose dos Santos, has named his daughter, Isabel dos Santos, head of the state oil company, Sonangol, after he sacked the entire board in April this year.

Isabel is Africa’s richest woman according to Forbes magazine and is worth an estimated $3.3bn

A large part of her business empire is based in Portugal but she also has large shares in many of Angola’s important industries, including diamonds, banking, media and telecommunications sectors.

Critics accuse President Dos Santos, who has ruled the country since 1979, of being increasingly authoritarian. But spokespersons for his daughter denied her wealth was due to her father’s position as president.

President Jose Dos Santos is Africa’s second longest-serving leader, after Equatorial Guinea’s Teodoro Mbasogo.

In March, the 73-year-old president said he was planning to step down in 2018 even though he has failed to follow through on similar commitments made in the past.

An Angolan analyst, Aslak Orre, has alleged that the appointment was politically motivated given the president’s age and the fact that his son, Jose, is head of the country’s sovereign wealth fund, created to make investments using the country’s oil wealth.

“The way he is channeling resources and public jobs to Isabel and his other children implies he is planning almost a monarchical succession… passing power from himself to one of his children,” he said.

Angola is also rich in diamonds, which was the major reason for a 27-year civil war in the country that ended in 2002.

The country has witnessed an economic boom since the end of the war but the wealth has only reportedly benefited only a few elite.

Angola and Nigeria are the two largest oil producing countries in Africa.

But Al-hassan said the court did not adjourn indefinitely as reported by the media, and said it was a “misunderstanding”of the court.

Saraki is standing trial on allegations of false assets declaration during his tenure as Governor of Kwara State.
