UNIMAID Will Not Be Shut Over Insecurity – VC

0

Musdapha Ilo, Maiduguri

Authorities of the University of Maiduguri, UNIMAID, have dispelled rumours that it would be temporarily closed down as a result of security threats in the state, saying that measures have been put in place to safeguard lives and properties at the institution.

The chief information officer of the university, Ahmed Tanko Mohammed, who cleared the air on behalf of the vice chancellor, Mala Daura, on Sunday in Maiduguri, said that the rumour of possible attack of the campus by members of the Boko Haram group was “unfounded and misplaced”.

“There is no cause for alarm. The university authority is working in collaboration with security agencies to ensure security for the entire university community. We have quite a good number of security personnel around the university and as such, parents and guardian should know their children are safe,” the vice chancellor assured.

He therefore cautioned students against fleeing the campus on the basis of the rumour and encouraged them to settle down for their academic activities.

Daura added: “We have no intention to close the university as academic activities continue unhindered. We urged the students to continue their lecture without fear because the security situation in Maiduguri is now calm and normalcy is returning.”

Hundreds of students had fled the university campus for fear of an attack against the school after two people died last Friday from stray bullets during a gun battle between the Army and insurgents in the state.

It would be recalled that members of the Boko Haram sect had invaded the Giwa Barracks, which is a short distance from the institution, shooting indiscriminately and setting off explosives with the motive of freeing some of its detained members.

The military fought back to frustrate the plan and in the process up 220 casualties as at the last count were recorded.

Nigerians Demand Sack Of Minister Over NIS Recruitment Deaths

1

Angry citizens are demanding the sack of the minister of Interior, Abba Moro, and the comptroller general of the Nigerian Imigration Service, NIS, over the death of at least 14 persons during its nationwide recruitment examination.

Following stampedes in overcrowded venues of the NIS examination, 14 applicants died while scores were wounded in several centres.

While a shocked nation was still morning and asking questions, Moro coldly put the blame of the tragedy on the young people whom he blamed for being unruly.

“The applicants lost their lives due to impatience; they did not follow the laid down procedures spelt out to them before the exercise. Many of them jumped through the fences of affected centres and did not conduct themselves in an orderly manner to make the exercise a smooth one. This caused stampede and made the environment unsecured,” the minister told a newspaper.

A total of 520,000 persons, including many pregnant women, took part in the exercise in which the NIS plans to recruit only 4,556 people. Each applicant paid N1,000 for application form.

In spite of the deaths following the stampede, the recruitment examination was  still conducted for the fittest who survived the mad rush.

At the Nnamdi Azikwe National Stadium, Abuja, the examination which was conducted in batches for B.Sc, HND, OND, NCE and SSCE holders, commenced at 4:00 p.m and was characterised by a lot of irregularities, candidates who took the test said.

Many applicants, who could not find their way into the venue because of the huge crowd, wrote the examination outside the stadium.

Spokesman for the National Hospital Abuja, Tayo Haastrup, confirmed that seven persons were brought in dead and that the bodies had been deposited at the mortuary.

“The hospital received some casualties from the stampede from the ongoing Immigration recruitment at the National Stadium. Those that died were seven in number, five women are and two men, their corpses have been deposited at the mortuary,” Haastrup said.

The situation at the National Stadium Abuja was replicated in other parts of the country like Rivers State, where a stampede equally marred the recruitment exercise, resulting in the death of four persons.

Hospital authorities at the Rivers government-owned Braithwaite Memorial Hospital in Port Harcourt confirmed that four candidates died during the stampede.

In Owerri Imo State, no fewer than 10 applicants, including three expectant mothers, fainted while waiting for the commencement of the test.

Similarly, two applicants -a female and a male- slumped and died at the recruitment venue in Minna, Niger State, on Saturday where over 12,000 applicants converged for recruitment exercise.

The state’s commissioner for Health, Ibrahim Sule, who confirmed the death of the two applicants said while the female was reported dead on arrival at the hospital, the male applicant died of his injuries on admission at Minna General Hospital.

The speaker of the House of Representatives, Aminu Tambuwal, has described the deaths as unfortunate, sorrowful and regrettable.

In a statement issued by his special adviser on media and public affairs, Imam Imam, the Speaker urged the authorities concerned to investigate the remote and immediate causes of the tragedy, and advised them to map out strategies to prevent future occurrence.

He also called on governments at all levels to work closely with the organised private sector to tackle the unemployment problem facing the nation.

Also, the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, has called on the ministry of Interior and relevant government agencies, to immediately swing into action to unravel the remote and immediate causes of the stampede.

National Publicity Secretary of the party, Olisa Metuh, further urged government agencies and parastatals, as well as all PDP elected and appointed officials at all levels of government to redouble their efforts in curbing unemployment in the country.

A similar tragedy occured in 2008 when no fewer than 20 people died in various states of the federation during a recruitment exercise into Nigeria Prisons Service, Nigeria Immigration Service and Customs Service.

The Nigeria Army says it has arrested many terrorists and recovered ammunition and money, including foreign currency, in raids on several of their camps in Borno State.

A statement released by the director defence information, Chris Olukolade, a major-general, said that troops captured a massive armoury with arms and ammunition in a Boko Haram camp which was invaded Friday night, as part of ongoing counter terrorists operations.

“The large quantities of weapons recovered in the raid are still being evacuated from the scene of the night raid where several terrorists died,” he said.

The Army also said substantial sums  of money in different currencies and denominations were also recovered from the camps and that a total of seven terrorists were captured in the operations which left a soldier dead and others injured

The defence spokesman said those arrested in the encounter are providing useful information towards the discovery of other hide outs of the daring terrorists.

He added that the terrorists are now desperate to either free or kill their detained members, with a view to avenging or preventing from further revelations about their operations and hide outs.

“More bodies of fleeing terrorists have been discovered along the routes of their escape.  Troops morale and fighting spirit have been further boosted by the outcome of the operations so far,” the statement said.

Similar operations also took place in coordination with the troops of Multi-National Joint Task Force in other camps located in the outskirts of Duguri, Polkime, Malafatori and other locations around the fringes of Lake Chad.

Police Service Commission Axe Falls On 31 Erring Officers

0

The Police Service Commission, PSC, Friday dismissed three senior police officers and disciplined 29 others for professional misconduct.

The affected officers are Sa’adu Akanbi, a deputy superintendent of police and two assistant superintendents of police, Ignatius Atta and James Sanio.

A statement issued by the assistant director, press and public relations of the  ommission, Ferdinand Ekpe, said that the officers were sacked for conducts unbecoming of law enforcement officers, although the specific offences committed were mentioned.

The statement said in addition to the dismissal, Akanbi and Sanio would be prosecuted.

Four others, including a chief superintendent of police, Bethram Onuoha, were reduced in rank. Onuoha was reduced to superintendent of police and is to forfeit seven months’ salary in addition.

Others were severely reprimanded for various offences and issued letters of advice.

Appeal Court Dismissed Corruption Case Against Hon Hembe

0

A Court of Appeal sitting in Abuja has thrown out a case instituted by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC, against a former chairman of the House of Representatives committee on Capital Markets, Herman Hembe, for allegedly converting to personal use, the $4,095 (about N600,000).

The money given to him by the Securities and Exchange Commission, SEC, as travelling allowance for a conference in the Dominican Republic in October 2011.

‎Hembe was charged along with his deputy, Chris Azubogu, charged for the alleged illegal conversion.

In dismissing the case, the presiding judge, Justice Joseph Tine-Tur, accused the EFCC of persecuting the accused, saying that the proof of evidence and the evidence given by the witnesses called by‎ commission did not establish a prima facie case against Hembe.

Coming down heavily on the anti corruption agency, Justice Tine-Tur described Hembe’s trial as a waste of‎ court’s time and consequently quashed the charges, discharging and acquitting the accused.

One of the two-count charge against the accused read: “That you Hon. Iorwase Herman Hembe, sometime in October 2011 in Abuja within the Judicial Division of the High Court of the Federal Capi-tal Territory, dishonestly converted to your own use the sum of $4,095, being money given to you by the Securities and Exchange Commission as your travelling allowance to PUNCTA CANA, Dominican Republic, to attend a conference which you did not attend and thereby committed an offence contrary to section 308 of the Penal Code Act, Laws of the Federation of Nigeria (Abuja) 2004 and punishable under section 309 of the same code.”

At the FCT High court, counsels to the accused persons, Jilbrin Okutepa and Onyechi Ikpeazu, had argued that their clients did not commit any offence to warrant them facing trial.

Both Hembe and Azubuogu had maintained they were not guilty when the charges were read to them and approached the Court of Appeal after the Abuja High Court dismissed an application they filed in a bid to quash the charges.

It would be recalled that the director general, SEC, Arumah Oteh, in a bid to fight accusations of reckless expenditure of public funds,  had alledged that the federal lawmakers were out to smear her reputation because she refused to give a N39 million bribe they demanded from her.

She pointedly accused Hembe of demanding bribe from SEC, saying that in October 2011, the committee chairman had collected money and a first class ticket from SEC on the excuse of travelling to the Dominican Republic to attend a conference on capital market.

She said Hembe neither made the trip nor returned the money.

The accusations caused such public uproar that forced  Hembe to resign his position to allow for thorough investigation into the matter as the EFCC charged he and his deputy to court.

The judges Court of Appeal Court judge who struck out the case expressed diamat at the shoddy manner the agency handled the case.

Over 200 Boko Haram Members Killed In Giwa Barracks Attack

Musdapha Ilo, Maiduguri

At least 207 corpses of members of a terrorist group, Boko Haram, have been recovered following a reprisal from the Army against the rebels who attacked a military base in Giwa, Borno State on Friday hoping to set free some of their detained members.

This was disclosed by a sector leader of the youth vigilante group known as Civilian JTF, Abdullahi Dere.

Dere said that the insurgents had succeeded in setting free some of its members before the reprisal from the military that left many dead and others gravely wounded.

“We counted 207 dead bodies of Boko Haram members shot dead by the military in Jidari Polo area alone. The suspected Boko Haram members had attacked Giwa Barracks and freed some of the detainees but the Military were able to go after them and killed them. As we speak (yesterday) the dead bodies of the terrorists are still within our area unattended to,” he said.

According to him, many fleeing members of the group were captured and handed over to the military.

Speaking in the same vein, the vice chairman of the vigilante group in the area, Tijjani Bello said apart from 207 persons killed close to the barracks, many more were killed in different parts of the city, fearing however, that some innocent residents may be among the dead.

He said “Many  Boko Haram members were also killed apart from the ones killed in Jidari Polo. But we only fear that some innocent residents may be among those killed.”

Director, defence information, Chris Olukolade, a major-general, said in a pressed statement Friday, that “pockets of terrorists” had attacked the military facility in an attempt to free their colleagues who are being held in detention at the Giwa Barracks, “to boost their depleted stock of fighters”.

He, however, did not disclose that the insurgents succeeded in releasing some of their detained colleagues before soldiers repelled them.

According to him, many of the terrorists and their weapons were captured, even as “hot” pursuits by land and air operations are ongoing along with cordon and search of surrounding localities for fleeing members of the terrorist group, which many speculate to be Boko Haram.

He stated, however, that four soldiers were ajinder in the attack and are receiving treatment.

In view of the security situation, the state government has announced a 24-hour curfew on Maduguri, urging residents to remains indoors until normalcy is restored.

APGA Faction Demands Representation At National Conference

0

The Maxi Okwu-led faction of the All Progressives Grand Alliance, APGA, has urged the federal government to reinstate the party’s delegates to the National Conference.

The government on March 13 dropped the nominees submitted by the Okwu leadership of the party pending the resolution of APGA’s protracted leadership crisis.

There has been a lingering leadership crisis between Victor Umeh and Okwu, with the two heading different factions of the party.

Adressing newsmen in Abuja on Friday, Okwu noted that the federal government had temporarily suspended APGA delegates with the understanding that the two factions would resolve their disagreements.

He said that the party was initially given two slots at the conference, leading to the nomination of his faction’s deputy national chairman, South, Ejike Uche, and its national secretary, Sagir Maidoya, to represent APGA.

Okwu said further that Umeh became “angry that he lost the leadership of the party and the delegates he purportedly nominated to the conference which led to the suspension of APGA’s delegates.”

He said appropriate action is being taken to ensure that the “authentic” APGA delegates as submitted by his leadership and published by government participate in the conference, adding that the opportunity would enable the party members to contribute their quota to deepening the country’s democracy and national development.

“To us, this conference is in furtherance of President Goodluck Jonathan’s transformation agenda and renegotiation of our nationhood which will produce for the first time the people’s constitution. We are optimistic that government will reconsider its stand and allow our delegates to take their rightful place at the confab,” he said.

The Federal High Court in Abuja had upheld the Okwu-led faction of the party as the authentic one, while the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, recognises Umeh as chairman of the party.

Court Sentences Sudanese Rebels To Death

Former Blue Nile State governor and leader of the opposition Sudan People’s Liberation Movement-North (SPLM-N), Malik Agar, his deputy Yassir Arman and 16 other leaders of the group have been sentenced to death by hanging.

Some 47 others were given life sentences for their involvement in incidents against the government in the Blue Nile State, the official Radio Omdurman reported on Friday.

According to the report, which was also carried by the pro-government Sudanese Media Centre, the verdicts were announced by a special tribunal in Singah, capital of neighbouring Sennar State.

The tribunal, led by Judge Abdul Monim Younis, tried the SPLM-N leaders for staging an armed rebellion in the Blue Nile State and convicted them of war against the government, undermining the Constitution and murder.

Agar, Arman and all others, except one, who were sentenced to death, were tried in absentia.
The court acquitted 31 other SPLM-N members for lack of evidence.

The radio said that the sentences were announced by the tribunal under heavy security measures in the presence of a large number of relatives of the accused.

Boko Haram Routed By Military In Attempt To Free Detained Terrorists

0

The Nigerian Army on Friday said that an attack by insurgents on its base in Giwa, Borno State was an attempt to free detained Boko Haram members and that it was successfully repelled.

Reports earlier indicated that the insutgents laid seige to Maiduguri and bombarded the Giwa military Barracks but they were repelled, suffering a heavy human casualty.

At least 50 of the insurgents are believed to have been killed with many others injured or arrested.

Director, defence information, Chris Olukolade, a major-general said “pockets of terrorists” had attacked the military facility in an attempt to free their colleagues who are being held in detention at the Giwa Barracks, “to boost their depleted stock of fighters”.

According to Olukolade, many of the terrorists and their weapons were captured, even as hot pursuits by land and air operations are ongoing along with cordon and search of surrounding localities for fleeing members of the terrorist group, which many speculate to be Boko Haram.

He said that the army believes that the terrorists’ attempt was in response to the intensity of attacks on their camps at Talala, Sambisa forests, Gwoza, Mandara mountains as well as the general area of Lake Chad, where the “camps have been destroyed and many insurgents killed.”

The director of information said four soldiers were however wounded in the attack and are receiving treatment. He promised to give more details of the attack as soon as he is able.

Another security source said over 100 insurgents were killed in the attack, but residents who spoke said they only saw about 50 corpses.

Residents of Polo Area of the town, who spoke to journalists, said 30 corpses believed to be members of the outlawed Boko Haram were dumped in the area by the military at about 11 am.

It was also gathered that some of the fleeing insurgents ran into a private secondary school, Capital International School where they forced the students to give up their uniforms which they subsequently disguised in.

The insurgents could, however, not keep up the disguise for too long as they looked strange in the uniforms. They were subsequently caught and handed over to the military.

Meanwhile, the police command in the state has denied reports that the University of Maiduguri, UNIMAID campus, was also attacked during the operation.

The  police commissioner, Lawal Tanko, explained that the insurgents only passed through a river channel behind the university to launch the attack on the barracks and that the institution itself was not attacked.

He said that the university campus was safe as both students and lecturers had been adequately protected.

“The story indicating that the university had been attacked is not true. It is true that there is an ongoing exchange of fire between security agents and some suspected insurgents, but the incident is limited to the barracks area alone,” he said.

Corroborating this position, the chief information officer of the university, Ahmed Mohammed, said “the university camp was not attacked; the attackers only used a narrow river side near the campus to carry out their nefarious act. Many people assumed that the university was affected because the hostilities took place near the campus.”

But one of the students who spoke anonymously claimed that seven bomb blasts occurred within the ivory tower leading to the destruction of one of the Education Trust Fund (ETF) buildings  and injuries to some of the students.

Residents of the area said three deafening explosions were heard and sporadic shootings have been ongoing.

Even though the military say heavy human casualty was inflicted on the terrorist group, it is believed that many civilians would have been caught in the crossfire as well.

The state government has announced a 24-hour curfew on the troubled town following the attack.

Notice of the curfew was contained in a statement issued by the secretary to the state government, Baba Ahmed Jidda, who advised everyone to stay indoors to allow the military and security personnel do the task of bringing back normalcy.

Tension In Maiduguri, As Army Tackle Insurgents In Massive Shootout

0

Maiduguri came under siege early Friday as the military engaged terrorists in a massive shootout that is causing anxiety among residents of the town.

Information is still sketchy but three deafening explosions and sporadic shooting have been reported around the Giwa Barrack area of the city in what a resident says is an attempt by gunmen suspected to the Boko Haram insurgents to take over the military base.

There are also speculations that attacks might be launched in schools, as parents hurry from their workplaces to retrieve their wards.

Most residents are locked in their homes and other safe places to secure their lives just as military airplanes hover in the skies amidst sounds of gunshots.

The attack which started since about 7:20am is still on as at press time.
