LP agents missing in polling units in Ekiti North

AGENTS of the Labour Party (LP) are absent from several polling units in Ekiti North Federal Constituency of Ekiti State in the ongoing Presidential and National Assembly elections.

The ICIR observed that LP agents were not seen in polling units visited in Oye, Ikole, and Ido Local Government Areas at the time of filing the report.

In contrast, agents from other political parties, including the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and the All Progressives Congress (APC), were present in all the polling units and wards visited.

Despite the absence of LP agents, the electoral process was so far peaceful, with voters turning out in large numbers to cast their ballots.

Some of the electorates interviewed by The ICIR commended the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) for the hitch-free process in their respective polling units.

APC presidential candidate Tinubu votes in Lagos

THE ALL Progressive Congress (APC) presidential candidate Bola Tinubu has cast his votes in Lagos.

Tinubu voted at Unit 085, Ward 03, Kaffi Street, Ikeja Local Government Area of Lagos State.

Tinubu is contesting for the position of Nigeria President with other seventeen candidates.

Speaking with journalists shortly after casting his vote, Tinubu commended the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) for conducting a peaceful election so far.

He noted that he’s confident and hopeful that he will emerge the winner of the presidential election if the election continues in a peaceful environment.

Commenting on the large turn out of voters in his area, Tinubu stressed that it’s not surprising, adding that people are confident in his candidacy.

Buhari, wife cast votes in Daura

PRESIDENT Muhammadu Buhari and his wife, Aisha Buhari, have exercised their franchise at Polling Unit 003, Sarkin Yara ‘A’ in Daura, Katsina State.

The President and his wife had earlier arrived in Daura for the 2023 Presidential and National Assembly election.

Checks on the registration list at the polling unit indicated that the President was number 185 on the list with the VIN number 185 VIN90F5B02C90295694732.

Speaking to newsmen after voting, Buhari noted that the the Permanent Voters Card (PVC) would mitigate the level of electoral malpractice in the country.

“The Permanent Voters Card has made it possible that no person can come and claim more than one  vote for himself.”

He, however, urged Nigerians across the country to shun electoral violence during and after the election.

Voting commences in Bwari area of FCT

VOTING has commenced in some parts of the Bwari Local Government Area of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT).

At Polling Unit 018 at Kubwa by Byazhin Junction, voters can be seen queuing up for accreditation.

Voting commenced at the Polling Unit at exactly 9:13 am.

Voting and accreditation have also started at Polling Unit 189 Gwarinpa Estate 2/ Tipper Garage.

A huge turnout was observed at this location as people waited patiently in the queue to exercise their franchise.

However, at  Polling unit 001, Kabusa LEA, as of 10:10 am, voters are getting aggressive and angry over the slow process of voting and accreditation. Security operatives are trying to calm the situation.

Late arrival of INEC officials delays elections in South-South

THE late arrival of electoral officers has delayed the commencement of Saturday’s Presidential and National Assembly elections across the South-South.

In some parts of the states in the region, officials of the Independent National Electoral Commission arrived at their polling unit later than 9 am.

As at the time, voters began to arrive, some of the polling units were still locked, and some others were accessible, but no INEC official or voting material was in sight.

In Calabar state, INEC did not arrive at their polling units until 9:30

Akai Efa town hall, PU 006, WARD 6, Calabar local government area, Cross River state, INEC official was not around as of 9:33 am.

In Baise council, Ikun Etono/ ward, polling unit 10. INEC had not arrived at the polling unit as of 9:33. Election materials were also unavailable.

The same was found polling unit 17 Ward 06, Calabar LGA and Idomi ward, unit 10, Yakurr LGA.

In Bayelsa, Rivers, Edo and Delta states, voters were seen in several polling units in different area councils waiting for the officials to arrive to commence the process.

In ward 17, Southern Ijaw, in Bayelsa, voters were still awaiting INEC material at 10 am.

In Edo polling unit 72, Oredo LGA, voting did not commence until 10:05 am.

At Ward 1, unit 9, Obio/Akpor LGA, Rivers State, Voting was yet to commence at 10:10 am.

Accreditation, voting commence nationwide

ACCREDITATION and voting have commenced nationwide as Nigerians elect a new President and National Assembly members.

The ICIR observed that the process has been orderly and peaceful although there were few places where late arrival of INEC officials and election materials made residents angry.

The presidential and senatorial election which is taken place across the 36 states and the FCT are being contested by 18 political parties. Data from INEC shows that 87,209,007 of registered voters collected their PVCs and would likely be participating in the election. The figure translates to 93.3 per cent of total number of registered voters which is 93,469,008.

These registered voters are expected to vote across the 176,846 polling units as updated by INEC.

The ICIR reporter observed that in Sokoto North, Wammako LGA, the INEC officials have started distributing and accrediting voters.

Also, in Sokoto South, The ICIR observed that the election process has started with the accreditation of voters. The atmosphere is equally calm as voters conduct themselves ordely.

Similarly, in Lagos State, election process has started in most polling units. However, INEC officials arrived late at the polling unit of the APC presidential candidate. The officials arrived at 9;40am, about 1 hour after the official time for the commencement of the election.

The ICIR observed that accreditation has commenced in Edo State. At Adeolu Enumah Oliseh PU 20, Ward 3, Oredo LGA, the presiding officer has distributed materials and accredited voters.

In the FCT, Gado Nasko polling units 1-7, Gwagwalada Area council, election has started and some residents had cast their votes.

Accreditation has also begun in PU 12, Ganaja/township Ward, Ajaokuta LGA of Kogi State. Voters are out in their numbers.

Similarly, in Kwara State, at PU 10, Ward 02, Ilorin West LGA, members of the INEC staff are seen attending to voters.

In Anambra State, voting and accreditation have started at polling unit 019, Ward 2 Amatutu village-Agulu of Aniocha LGA.

However, in Anambra North, polling unit 008, ward 005 many voters are stranded as INEC officials and security operatives are yet to arrive as at 9:50 am.

The ICIR also observed that in Abia North LGA of Abia State, the election is yet to commence in any polling unit as INEC adhoc staff are still at the convergence point, Umukalika by 9:39 am.

Voting yet to commence as INEC officials arrive late in South-East

AS the Presidential and National Assembly elections get underway across the country, it has been observed that officials of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) are yet to arrive at several polling units (PUs) in the South-East.

By 9.10 am at Polling Unit 13, Ward 015, Maryland Estate, Enugu, voters were seen waiting for the INEC officials to arrive.

The environment is calm and quiet.

Also, at Polling Unit 057, Ward 006, Amasato, Abia State, voting is yet to commence as INEC staff are nowhere to be seen. Voters can be seen loitering around the venue.

The venue is a convergence point for all INEC ad-hoc officials working in Osisioma LGA.

Also, at Polling Unit 015, Ward 10, Anambra North, no INEC official has arrived as at 9:30 am.

Security operatives around Enugu South Local Government Area are on the ground to keep voters safe.

INEC, security operatives missing at polling units as residents troop out for election

FEW minutes after 8:30 am, Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) adhoc staff are yet to arrive at some polling units in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Edo, Sokoto, Kaduna, Delta and Kwara states, among others.

This has led to anxiety on the part og voters who have trooped out in large numbers to cast their votes.

The election of the Presidential and senatorial candidates is currently holding across the 36 states of the country and the FCT.

Eighteen political parties are participating in the presidential election across 176,846 polling units in 8,809 wards.

The ICIR reporter observed that as 8:25 am, INEC officials are yet to arrive at several polling units. The election is expected to start by 8:30 am with accreditation of voters.

In Edo State, at Polling Unit 019, Ward 06, in Ighekpe community town hall, Uhumwode LGA, INEC officials and security agents were not in sight as at 8:17 am. The ICIR observed that no voters register has been pasted on the wall. In Ogodineze, Polling Unit 015, Ward 12, also I Edo State, no INEC officials were sighted as at 8:30 am.

In Delta State, The ICIR observed that INEC officials have not arrived at Polling Unit 02, Oko Amakom Ward, as at 8:30 am.

Similarly, The ICIR observed that INEC adhoc staff were yet to dispatch voting materials at St. Peter Angelica Primary School Polling Unit in Lagos State as at 8:35 am.

At a polling unit in Kano Road/Samaru Ward, Sabon Gari LGA of Kaduna State, INEC officials and election materials are yet to arrive at 8:30 am.

The ICIR also observed that INEC officials are not present at Galadimawa/City View Estate, Municipal LGA of Abuja as at 9:02 am. Also in Kubwa, residents are stranded as at 8:40 am as INEC staff yet to arrive.

In Kwara State, INEC officials and voting materials have not arrived at Polling Unit 004, Alanamu Central, Ilorin West, as at 8:40 am.

 

 

CJID, ICIR, 17 others partner to promote election reporting

THE CENTRE for Journalism Innovation and Development (CJID) is collaborating with 18 media organisations to amplify real-time election field reports from observers deployed across the country in the 2023 General Elections.

The Deputy Director of Accountability CJID, Mboho Eno, made this known on Friday, February 24, in Abuja.

Eno said the partnership is designed to support the media with credible real-time information that could improve the quality of information available on electoral activities.

He stated that collaboration would help to deepen democratic engagement and strengthen institutions through civic and media strategies during the elections. 

“It is basically a resource-sharing initiative to help deepen the nation’s democratic gains through ensuring the accountability of the electoral process.”

Eno stressed that the partnership is a loose coalition that includes the CJID, the International Centre for Investigative Reporting (ICIR), Premium Times, Media Trust Group, WikkiTimes, and Dataphyte Nigeria Limited.

Other media partners include Blaze 91.5 FM, TheInformant 247, TwentyTen Daily, Sobi FM, BONews Services, African Tech Radio, Lens Africa TV, Rapid FM, Just Event Online, Oyo News, Insight Multi-Links Media, Roundoffnews and Platform Times Media.

Eno further emphasised that the partnership is at no cost to the media houses but was conceived with a high sense of constitutional responsibility to help extend each other’s news coverage resources through collaborative reporting that deepens citizens’ capacity.

The Centre for Journalism Innovation and Development however stressed that it would deploy over 60 observers and reporters across 33 states of the federation to monitor and give a situation analysis of proceedings during the general election.

Late arrival of election materials delay voting process at Tinubu’s polling unit

AS the Presidential and National Assembly elections commences across Lagos State, findings by The ICIR have shown late arrival of election materials at several polling units including that of the All Progressives Congress (APC) presidential candidate, Bola Tinubu, located around Kafi Street, Ikeja.
As of  8:45 am, vehicles meant to despatch ad-hoc staff of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) and the electoral materials were just arriving at the Registration Area Centre at St. Peters Anglican Primary School, Ikeja.
Information from the INEC states that voting process ought to commence by 8:30 am to 2:30 pm.
But as of 9:15 am, the PU is still unoccupied by the INEC officials, except for operatives of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) who visited briefly, and left after less than two minutes.
“We were excepting INEC but its EFCC officials that appeared. What are they looking for?” a voter queried.
Meanwhile, voters were already gathered anticipating the arrival of the electoral officers.
Another voter, Remi Chucks, expressed disappointment at the delay of the election materials.
However, she was optimistic on the voting outcome, stressing that it would be peaceful.
