Bank stocks drive investors’ gain to N794 billion in one week

TRADING activities in the Nigerian stock market rebounded in the just-concluded week, driven by bank shares and leaving investors with N794 billion gain.

The stock market had witnessed a bearish sentiment in the previous week that left investors with an N1.452 trillion loss.

At the close of the week’s trading session, the equities market reversed last week’s loss with positive sentiment that saw the benchmark index and market capitalisation appreciate significantly.

The market capitalisation rose by 1.26 per cent week-on-week to close at N63.65 trillion on Friday, January 24 from N62.85 trillion the market opened on Monday, January 20.

Similarly, the All-Share Index rose by 1.22 per cent week-on-week to close at 103,598.30 points from 102,353.68 points in the review week.

The upward trajectory was buoyed by strong investor sentiment, underpinned by anticipation of companies’ fourth-quarter earnings releases, and the ongoing adjustments in portfolio rebalancing.

These factors have begun to shape investor expectations for the end-of-year financial performance of listed companies as well as the supplementary listing of LASACO Assurance’s 9.25 billion ordinary shares on the Nigerian Exchange Limited (NGX), market analysts said.

Amid a mixed sectoral performance, the banking index emerged as the best-performing sector, with a 4.09 per cent rise to 1,160.88 points.

Key stocks that buoyed the banking stocks include the shares of Fidelity Bank and United Bank for Africa (UBA).

Besides the recorded gains, other indices that declined were the insurance Index dropping by -1.20 per cent to 730.95 followed by the consumer goods index which dipped by 1.20 per cent to 1,739.35 points and -0.93 per cent to 2,642.83 points.

Scoa Nigeria share topped the gainers table, gaining N1.48 to close at N3.96. UACN Property Development Company followed with a 32k gain to N2.00, and Coronation Insurance came third with a 0.34k gain to close at N2.56.

Meanwhile, notable stocks that appreciated during the week in review were Transnational Corporation which gained N5.05 to close at N52 and Guinness Nigeria which gained N7 to close at N77.

On the reverse, Sunu Assurances Nigeria topped the losers’ table with an N-1.68 loss to close at N5.01 closed in the red included

Cornerstone Insurance, Honeywell Flour Mills, Dangote Sugar Refinery, Aradel Holdings, and Eterna Oil. Their losses were largely driven by sell-offs in their stocks.

A total turnover of 3.132 billion shares worth N76.55 billion in 61,456 deals was traded in the review week by investors on the floor of NGX compared to a total of 2.252 billion shares valued at N58.83 billion that exchanged hands in 63,657 deals in the previous week.

Wema Bank, Secure Electronic Technology, and Access Holdings, measured by volume, accounted for 1.437 billion shares worth N15.41 billion in 5,292 deals and contributed 89 per cent and 20.13 per cent to the total equity turnover volume and value.

Analysts at Cowry Asset Management believe that the current positive market sentiment is expected to persist into the coming week, supported by the release of corporate earnings and anticipated corporate actions.

“The results published so far have been encouraging, providing a foundation for sustained price support and attracting fresh capital inflows into the market.

“Moreover, the prevailing low valuation of many stocks continues to create opportunities for investors to buy into value and strategically reposition their portfolios. However, the market may experience bouts of volatility as the earnings season progresses,” the analysts stated in their weekly report.

Looking ahead they said mixed macroeconomic data and upcoming economic events are likely to influence market sentiment, particularly for companies with December year-end financials.

Police summon Sowore over viral confrontation video

0

THE Nigeria Police Force has invited activist and former presidential candidate, Omoyele Sowore, to its headquarters in Abuja following his confrontation with officers on the Lagos Airport Road.

The invitation, dated January 23, 2025, according to the police, is in connection with allegations of “resisting and obstructing public officers, disobedience to lawful order, acts intended to cause grievous harm or prevent arrest, compelling action by intimidation, reckless and negligent acts, refusal to assist public servant, and cyberstalking.”

The invitation letter, signed by Ibitoye Rufus Alajide, requests Sowore to report to the Force Intelligence Department (FID) at 10 a.m. on Monday, January 27.

Sowore shared the letter on his X handle, captioning it with “The @PoliceNG invitation has arrived, I will be there on Monday as requested. #RevolutionNow.”

“You are requested to report for an interview with the deputy inspector general of police, Force Intelligence Department (FID) through the undersigned, at SPO’s Room 212, 2nd Floor, Force Intelligence Department (FID) Complex, Shehu Shagari Way, opposite Force Headquarters Area 11, Garki, Abuja on Monday, 27th January, 2025 at 10 am.

“This request is made pursuant to the investigative powers conferred on the Police by the combined effect of Sections 214 and the Constitution of Federal Republic of Nigeria 1999 (as amended, and Section 4 of the Police Act and Regulations, 2020.

“Be informed that you are at liberty to come along with your attorney, please,” part of the letter reads.

The ICIR reports that the police action followed a video posted by Sowore on January 9, 2025, in which he confronted some officers for blocking the Airport Road.

In the video, some gun-wielding policemen directed the vehicle conveying Sowore to park.

The activist declined the order and said it was wrong for the police to block an airport road.

“We are not parking. You are not supposed to be here. We are not parking. You are not supposed to be causing traffic on the Airport Road. We are not parking. Go and bring your Oga. You people should calm down.”

However, despite Sowore’s objections, the officers stood in front of his car, demanding he park, but the activist refused and insisted they clear the road.

Eventually, one of the officers standing by the roadside instructed his colleagues to let him proceed.

Meanwhile, in another social media post, Sowore reaffirmed his plans to appear at the Police Headquarters, stating: “We will move the barricades with us, it has shifted base NOW! It is now going to be on Monday 10 am at the Nigeria Police Force HQ in Abuja! #RevolutionNow.”

The activist is known for his outspoken stance on governance and social justice through his #RevolutionNow movement.

Wike, Bala Mohammed fight dirty, engage in name-calling, mudslinging

0

THE crisis between the minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Nyesom Wike and Bauchi State Governor Bala Mohammed has degenerated, with Wike accusing the governor of lacking the capacity to lead.

Mohammed had described Wike – a member of Mohammed’s Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) currently serving as a minister in the opposition All Progressives Congress (APC) – as a politician with double loyalty. He said such a character was shameless and set a dangerous precedent in Nigerian politics.

Mohammed said this in a statement signed by his special adviser on media and publicity, Mukhtar Gidado.

“Chief Wike’s ascendancy in politics is a testament to the opportunities provided by the PDP, yet, he now gleefully undermines the very foundation that nurtured him. It is disheartening that a man who owes so much to a party that stood by him in his political journey has chosen to be a willing tool in its denigration.

“Unlike Wike, who thrives on drama and divisiveness, Sen. Bala Mohammed has always understood that politics is not a game of self-serving theatrics but a platform to serve the public good. Wike’s erratic behaviour and opportunistic alliances expose him as an unreliable and fair-weather friend—traits that alienate even those who once stood by him.”

He said questioning his opposition to President Bola Tinubu’s tax reform bills was baseless and hypocritical.

“While Wike accuses others of insincerity, he has seamlessly transitioned from being a self-proclaimed PDP stalwart to an ardent supporter of the APC government.

“He now advocates for the reelection of the same APC administration in 2027, all while continuing to claim membership in the PDP. This chameleonic behaviour raises serious questions about Wike’s credibility and moral compass,Mohammed had said.

The statement was in reaction to Wike’s recent media chat where he criticised Mohammed’s opposition to President Bola Tinubu’s tax reform bills.

Responding to Mohammed in a statement on Friday, January 24, through his senior special assistant on public communications and social media, Lere Olayinka, Wike said,It is funny that a known fair-weather politician like Bala Mohammed was the one calling someone else a transactional politician.”

The FCT minister said Mohammed, who is the chairman of the PDP Governors Forum, dumped his political godfather and former governor of Bauchi State, Isa Yuguda, in 2007 and, as a member of the defunct All Nigeria People’s Party (ANPP), also dumped former President Muhammadu Buhari in 2010 for a ministerial slot under the PDP government of President Goodluck Jonathan.

“First, Governor Bala Mohammed is holding the position of chairman of the PDP Governors Forum out of political greed, because by convention and practice, the position should be held by one of the PDP governors in the South. The reason was that the immediate past chairman of the forum was from the North, the same as the PDP national chairman.

“Secondly, despite usurping the position of the PDP Governors Forum because of his rapacious nature, Bala Mohammed has demonstrated a lack of capacity to lead the PDP, the reason the party is how it is today,Wike added.

According to the minister, rather than taking responsibility for leadership and acting the same, Mohammad opted to divide the PDP’s national working committee (NWC) by relating with a faction while neglecting the other.

“For his ineptitude and lack of capacity to lead, Bala Mohammed has been blaming chief Ezenwo Nyesom Wike’s appointment as FCT Minister.”

He pointed out that between 2009 and 2003, former President Olusegun Obasanjo appointed members of opposition parties to his government, despite the PDP winning the presidency.

Wike also criticised Mohammed’s political history, saying he became a minister in 2010 as a member of the defunct ANPP and later defected to the PDP, demonstrating his fair-weather politics.

The ICIR reported that President Bola Tinubu appointed Wike on August 16, 2023, nearly three months after assuming office.

Wike is the only publicly known card-carrying PDP cabinet member in the APC government.

Tinubu, Wike mourn former FCT minister Useni

0

PRESIDENT Bola Tinubu has joined the minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, to mourn the passing of a former minister of the FCT, Jeremiah Useni, a retired lieutenant general.

Jeremiah died on Thursday, January 23, following a prolonged illness. He was 82.

Tinubu, in a message on Friday, January 24, by his special adviser on information and strategy, Bayo Onanuga, extended condolences to the late general’s family, friends, military colleagues, and political associates.

Tinubu said Useni demonstrated courage and dedication throughout his military career and inspired many young officers to prioritise national interests above personal gain.

The president added that the late Useni also made some difference in politics.

On his part,  Wike described Useni’s death as the “fall of one of the biggest trees in the forest of Nigeria.”

Wike, in a statement signed by his senior special assistant on public communications and social media, Lere Olayinka, said the deceased was a leader Nigerians would never forget for helping to develop the FCT when he served as the minister between 1993 and 1998.

Wike said from joining the Army at 14, Useni’s life was a testament to his dedication and service to Nigeria.

According to Wike, Useni started his journey in the army at just 14 years old and went on to hold various prestigious positions, including military governor of the defunct Bendel State, minister of transport, quartermaster-general of the Nigeria Army, FCT minister, and senator for the people of Plateau South.

He said the career of the retired general spanned multiple decades and regimes, giving him a unique perspective on the country’s history and development.

“He was a jolly good fellow, fondly called ‘Jerry Boy,’ who took service to the people as his number one priority.

“Nigerians, especially the Tarok people of Plateau State, will never forget the late general for epitomising great virtues. He will be sorely missed by the entire people of Plateau State, the Nigerian Armed Forces and Nigerians in general.”

Wike expressed condolences on behalf of himself and the residents of the FCT, describing Useni as a great man, a patriot, a fine military officer, and a peacemaker.

Useni’s death was officially confirmed on Thursday night by Plateau State Governor Caleb Mutfwang in a statement released by his director of press and public affairs, Gyang Bere.

Mutfwang expressed sadness over the death, calling it a significant loss to the deceased’s family, the military, and the nation.

He lauded Useni’s leadership and commitment to public service, particularly in promoting peace and security in northern Nigeria.

The governor highlighted the deceased’s distinguished career, including his roles and his transition into politics as a senator.

He commended Useni’s selfless service and legacy, which he said would continue to inspire future generations.

ICPC charges TETFund contractors with diverting N2.2 billion student training funds

0

By Qosim SULEIMAN

THE Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC) has charged two Tertiary Education Trust Fund (TETFund) contractors and their companies with money laundering, accusing them of fraudulent diversion of funds meant for the execution of multibillion-naira training contracts awarded by the agency.

In separate cases filed in September last year at the Federal High Court in Abuja, the ICPC accused the individuals and their companies of failing to deliver on the contracts and diverting funds meant for their execution, court documents newly obtained by PREMIUM TIMES show.

The contractors are Paul Chukwuma, the Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of the Fides Et Ratio Academy Ltd, and Adedeji Ladipo, the Managing Director and  CEO of Pole Global Marketing Limited.

Managing Director/CEO, Fides Et Ratio Academy, Paul Chukwuma

ICPC accused them of concealing the origin of the funds, withdrawing parts of the money and converting some of it to foreign currencies, in a money laundering scheme that allegedly robbed TEFTFund of over N2.2 billion.

In the indictment, the ICPC said the defendants’ actions violated the provisions of section 18 of the Money Laundering Prevention and Prohibition Act (2022).

While Chukwuma of Fides Et Ratio is charged with nine counts, Ladipo is charged with four.

TETFund, an intervention agency for Nigerian tertiary institutions, statutorily receives three per cent of company income tax in Nigeria to fund infrastructure and training of staff in the institutions. It is the major funder of capital projects in Nigerian tertiary institutions.

A PREMIUM TIMES investigation had revealed how TETFund deducted the funds for training from the tertiary institutions’ 2023 annual disbursement against the wishes of the beneficiary institutions.

The report revealed that though Fides Et Ratio Academy was paid N2.9 billion out of the N3.8 billion in four instalments between June and November 2023, there was no evidence that the training had been conducted as of April 2024.

After PREMIUM TIMES story in April, the ICPC interrogated senior officials of the Fund, including the Director of Finance and Accounts, Gloria Olotu, the Director of Human Resources and General Administration at TETFUND, Kolapo Okunola, and the agency’s Director of Information Communication Technology (ICT), Joseph Odo.

The ICPC also interrogated Chukwuma, two months later in June.

Charges against Chukwuma of Fides Et Ratio

In the first to sixth charges filed on 11 September 2024 against Chukwuma, the ICPC accused him of diverting over N669 million meant for the training of students from various tertiary institutions.

The intended beneficiaries of the training that ICPC alleged never took place were:

  • 7,042 students from the Federal University Gusau, Zamfara State
  • 7,042 students from the Federal College of Education, Gidan Madi, Sokoto State
  • 6,329 students from the Federal Polytechnic, Bali, Taraba State
  • 6,329 students from the Umaru Ali Shinkafi Polytechnic, Sokoto, Sokoto State
  • 6,329 students from Ignatius Agwu University of Education, Port Harcourt, Rivers State
  • 6,329 students from Alvan Ikoku Federal University of Education, Owerri, Imo State

In the seventh to ninth charges, the ICPC accused him of using the funds for the training to purchase a N300 million Mercedes Benz GLS 600 Maybach and converted over N450 million to US dollars.

Adedeji Ladipo, the Managing Director/ CEO of Pole Global Marketing Limited

Charges against Ladipo of Pole Global Marketing Limited

In the second case filed by ICPC on 23 September 2024, the ICPC charged Ladipo with diverting over N808 million for the training of 2,239 persons paid for by TETFund.

The ICPC also accused him of converting the funds into US dollars and dissipating it without fulfilling the terms of contract with TETFund.

No state in northern Nigeria has 50% qualified teachers, says former governor

1

FORMER Governor of Niger State, Mu’azu Babangida Aliyu, has raised concerns over the quality of education in northern Nigeria, saying that no state in the region has up to 50 per cent of qualified teachers.

Aliyu stated this while speaking at the 22nd Daily Trust Dialogue, themed “Food Security: Availability or Affordability,” held on Thursday at the NAF Conference Centre in Abuja.

The former governor highlighted the need to improve teacher training and enhance educational standards in northern Nigeria.

He stressed the role of education in driving passion and progress, urging federal universities of agriculture and education to collaborate with farmers and other stakeholders to improve skills and knowledge.

“The second thing I am pursuing is education. In the northern states, there is no state with 50 per cent qualified teachers. Even those who are attending the schools now, let alone those who are not able to attend,” he said.

In December 2024, The ICIR reported how primary and secondary schools across Bauchi State lacked adequate and qualified teachers, with findings exposing the dire conditions in the schools and how the state government was looking the other way.

The report noted that the situation significantly impacted both the teachers, who experience burnout and diminished job satisfaction, and the students, whose educational foundation was compromised.

According to the report, schools with class sizes far exceeding recommended ratios are often managed by just one or two teachers, with many of them forced to merge classrooms or rotate lessons due to inadequate teachers.

Many schools relied on teachers without relevant qualifications to teach core subjects like Mathematics and English.

However, the Bauchi State Government responded to the investigation and approved the recruitment of 3,000 teachers.

Speaking further at the Daily Trust event on Thursday, the former governor criticised the closure of Nigeria’s borders.

He pointed out that despite the restrictions, Nigerian goods still dominated markets in neighbouring ECOWAS countries.

“What is the importance of closing borders? What is the importance of that while the population of Nigeria is almost the population of other ECOWAS members? And every market you go to in ECOWAS countries you will discover that more than half of the things in that market are from Nigeria.

“For example, in Niger, the cow is still cheaper than in Nigeria. Apart from the inflation, it has always been like that because we used to send people there on good days to get these cows either for slaughter or Sallah. Why is this so? Please, do what you have to do. Do also the education,” he said.

NNPCL records 179 oil theft incidents in one week

0

THE Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPCL) said it uncovered 179 incidents of crude oil theft in the past week.

The last incidents were revealed in a recent video shared by the NNPCL on its official X handle, stating that the incidents occurred between January 11 and 17 across the Niger Delta region.

Crude oil theft and vandalism have continued to hamper the state-owned energy firm’s production targets and destroyed its decade infrastructure, thereby leading to revenue loss for the country.

In the video, NNPCL reported that 29 illegal pipeline connections and 55 illegal refineries were uncovered within one week.

“Between the 11th and 17th of January 2025, a total of 179 incidents were recorded across the Niger Delta region, thanks to the coordinated efforts of NNPC Limited’s Command and Control Centre, Tantita Security Agency, Pipeline Infrastructure Nigeria Limited, Maton Engineering Nigeria Limited, Shell Petroleum Development Company Limited Nigeria, Liquefied Natural Gas, Oando PLC, and government security agencies,” NNPCL reported.

It said security forces in Bayelsa and Abia States uncovered the illegal pipeline connections and conducted repairs on the pipelines.

Vowing to continue to crack down on oil theft, NNPCL said security operatives dismantled illegal refineries producing black-market petroleum products in Rivers and Abia States.

It reported further that the week also revealed hidden storage sites used for illegal activities in Rivers and other locations in Abia.

“Security forces exposed and destroyed these sites. Unfortunately, acts of sabotage led to several oil spills during the week, including a vandalised condensate pipeline and damaged wellheads in Rivers,” it maintained.

Source: NNPCL

It also said security teams on the roads intercepted and seized vehicles loaded with stolen crude oil in Rivers, Bayelsa, and Abia, while wooden fibre boats packed with stolen crude oil were confiscated on the waterways.

The incidents spanned various corridors: 90 in the Central Corridor, 70 in the Eastern Corridor, five in the Western Corridor, and 14 in Deep Blue Water.

A total of 30 suspects were reportedly arrested and handed over to government security agencies for further investigation, NNPCL revealed.

Oil theft has repeatedly been blamed for Nigeria’s inability to meet oil production targets and earn more revenue.

In July last year, the NNPCL boss, Mele Kyari, announced that the company had declared a state of emergency on crude oil production.

According to him, the state-owned oil firm had decided to stop the debate and declared war on the challenges affecting its crude oil production and promised to improve the situation.

However, crude oil production has yet to significantly improve as industry experts are worried over Nigeria’s inability to meet its Organisation of Petroleum Exporting Countries quota of 1.5 million barrels per day production.

In a recent analysis, The ICIR reported that Nigeria’s crude oil production has not improved in the last four years despite the Nigerian Upstream Petroleum Regulatory Commission (NUPRC) doubling the country’s oil rig count to 32 in 2024.

According to the NUPRC chief executive, Gbenga Komolafe, the increase in rig count reflected ongoing efforts to boost upstream activities and enhance the country’s crude oil production capacity.

In its Monthly Oil Market Report, released on Wednesday, January 15, OPEC revealed that Nigeria’s crude oil production, based on direct communication, fell to 1,485 in December 2024 from 1,486 in November.

In June last year, The ICIR analysed how the Nigerian government was losing over N16 billion in revenue daily from crude oil production owing to a shortfall in oil production volume.

PETROAN seeks welfare priority for Ogoniland as Tinubu eyes oil

0

THE Petroleum Products Retail Outlets Owners Association of Nigeria (PETROAN) has said that as Nigeria President Bola Tinubu eyes the resumption of oil production in Ogoniland, the welfare of the people should also be prioritised.

PETROAN pointed this out in a statement by its national public relations officer, Joseph Obele, on Thursday, January 23.

The association’s call came following President Tinubu’s meeting with Ogoni delegates in Abuja on Tuesday, January 21.

“The resumption of oil production is sacrosanct, but the concerns should be participation, equity, empowerment, employment, environmental protection, and compensations for damages,” PETROAN expressed.

It urged Ogoni youths to support the resumption of oil production in their land.

It stressed that the concerns of all stakeholders should be addressed, suggesting that the Ogoni delegates organise town hall meetings in all four local governments in Ogoniland.

“These meetings will provide platforms for wider consultations and gather thoughts from various groups, including scholars, farmers, elders, women, and youths.

“The submissions from the town hall meetings will constitute the people’s position for development as oil production commences. This will form a position paper for the oil production company handling the oil production,” PETROAN stated.

It pointed out that it would be necessary to hear from the Ogoni community to affirm the position of the delegates who met with the President.

“It is not sufficient to adopt the opinion of 50 persons over a community of two million people, the body maintained,” PETROAN added.

President Tinubu had on Tuesday directed the National Security Adviser (NSA), Nuhu Ribadu, to coordinate negotiations with various parties within Ogoniland in the oil-rich Niger Delta area to resume oil production in the area.

He gave the directive when while receiving Ogoni leaders, including Governor Siminalayi Fubara, at the Aso Villa in Abuja.

He said his administration would prioritise peace, justice, and sustainable development in the area, calling for unity and reconciliation and urging the Ogoni people to set aside historical grievances and work together to achieve peace, development, and a clean environment.

“We cannot in any way rewrite history, but we can correct some anomalies of the past going forward. We cannot heal the wounds if we continue to be angry,

“We must work together with mutual trust. Go back home, do more consultations, and embrace others. We must make this trip worthwhile by bringing peace, development, and a clean environment back to Ogoniland,” Tinubu said.

Police rescue kidnapped retired AIG’s wife, recover ransom, weapons

0

THE Police have rescued the wife of a retired assistant inspector-general of police (AIG), Hakeem Odumosu, from kidnappers.

Odumosu’s wife was abducted outside her residence in Ogun State on Friday. January 17.

The police in a statement on Thursday, January 23, said it neutralised the kidnappers in the process and recovered the ransom paid.

The police in the statement signed by its spokesperson, Muyiwa Adejobi, said the Ogun State Police Command commenced a thorough investigation and targeted the kidnappers with the support of the Force Headquarters technical intelligence platforms.

He said command operatives engaged in extensive surveillance of the creeks surrounding Arepo, gathering crucial information to track down the assailants.

“Their efforts culminated in a raid on January 23, 2025, at around 06:45 am. The intelligence-led operation took the police to a creek in the swampy area of Ikorodu where the kidnappers were reportedly planning their next attack.

“Upon arrival, the operatives encountered the kidnappers, who opened fire. In the ensuing confrontation, two of the gunmen were neutralised, while four others fled the scene, abandoning their operational weapons,” Adejobi stated.

According to him, the victim was rescued within the swampy creeks during the operation, unharmed.

He said she was undergoing medical evaluation and had since been reunited with her family.

He added that the police also recovered four Ak-47 rifles, three locally made single barrel rifles, ammunition of various calibres, and N10,000,000 ransom previously demanded by the kidnappers.

Adejobi said the inspector-general of police, (IGP) Kayode Egbetokun commended the Ogun State commissioner of police,  Lanre Ogunlowo, and his operatives for their display of gallantry in the successful operation.

The ICIR reports that the victim’s husband served in the Force for 32 years.

He was the commander of the Lagos anti-crime Rapid Response Squad and the Special Environmental Unit of the Lagos police.

He later served as the Lagos State commissioner of police and retired from the Force in 2022.
