Buhari: I feel like going home but my doctors are in charge

Muhammadu BuhariPresident Muhammadu Buhari says there is tremendous improvement in his health and he wishes to return home but he hasn’t been given the go-ahead by his doctors.

According to a release by Femi Adesina, Special Adviser to the President on Media and Publicity, Buhari said this on Saturday when he received the presidential media team and the Senior Special Assistant on Diaspora Matters, at the Abuja House, London.

Adesina said the visiting team, led by Lai Mohammed, Minister of Information and Culture, comprised Garba Shehu, Senior Special Assistant on Media and Publicity; Lauretta Onochie, Personal Assistant on Digital/Online Media; and Abike Dabiri-Erewa, Senior Special Assistant on Diaspora Matters.

“I’ve learnt to obey my doctor’s orders, rather than be the one issuing the orders. Here, the doctor is absolutely in charge,” Buhari was quoted as saying.

“I feel I could go home, but the doctors are in charge. I’ve now learnt to obey orders, rather than be obeyed.”

On how he felt hearing different conjectures about his health, he said he was following events at home closely, and lauded Nigerian television stations, and the media generally, for keeping him informed.

When told that prayers were going on fervently for him, not only in Nigeria, but all over Africa, and round the world, a delighted President said: “What we did in The Gambia early this year fetched us a lot of goodwill on the African continent.

“It gave us a lot of latitude. I thank all those who are praying. May God reward them.”

Adesina added that the President sent appreciation to all Nigerians, expressing hope that he would be with them soon.

Buhari has been receiving treatment in the UK since May 7.

Charly Boy: Buhari’s government is evil… it lies, steals and cheats

charly-boy 1

Charly Boy, a musician and leader of #OurMumuDonDo protesters demanding for the return or resignation of ailing President Muhammadu Buhari, has branded the federal government “evil”.

Reacting to claim by the police that he was not touched during the protest on Tuesday in Abuja, where he collapsed after police fired tear gas canisters and water cannon at the demonstrators, Charly Boy accused the government of lying and cheating.

“Enough of all of this rubbish,” Chaly Boy, whose real name is Charles Oputa, told Saharareporters.

“The government lies, steals and cheats. It is an evil government. Although I have a few good people as friends who happen to be policemen, the truth is that the police is nobody’s friend especially the common people.

“We have a government of lies and deceit; even the police lie. It was on the social media for everyone to see. They said they were trying to protect people against miscreants but who are these miscreants that 150 policemen could not contain and then they began to spray water cannon on just seven people?

“Nobody paid us to come and talk about how we feel; that is why our numbers are small. The few people that have embarked on this protest are those who are willing to die for what they believe in and this concern Nigerians.”

Charly Boy said he was used to being roughened, referring to his manhandling by the police during the protest. Police had said that Charly Boy was not manhandled as he claimed, but that he fainted when he saw journalists and camera men.

“You know you cannot make an omelet without breaking an egg,” he said.

“You cannot be in this kind of struggle and do not expect people to misunderstand you, twist your intentions and roughen you up a little. These are the kind of things that happen especially when you are fighting a good fight and that is what we are doing. I am used to being roughened.”

While reacting to the lukewarm response of other celebrities to the protest, he noted that only a few Nigerians are responsible for the suffering that the ordinary Nigerian is passing through which he said only a few Nigerians are needed to rescue.

“The bible says, many are called but few are chosen. If there are only two of us, we are going to keep insisting on the right thing. Don’t forget, I did not start this movement. It was some young Nigerians that started it and they roped me into it.

“My job as an Area Fada is to guide them because what was missing in the past which made people claim that the youths have gone to sleep is that they did not have the right leadership. I have come out to say that I would take a bullet on their behalf because I feel and believe that this country would only be saved by some exceptional youths.

“We are not looking for a crowd. Like I always say, the people holding Nigeria at its jugular, those who are responsible for the excruciating poverty Nigerians are going through are not up to 50. My own equation is that the people that would rescue this country may not be up to 20 despite the fact that they would try and kill some or throw tear gas at them.”

Asked whether the agitation would make any impact, he said that the aim was to force a force a discussion.

“We want Nigerians to think because the truth is that it is young people that rule the world now, the old people are just there to advise the young, and I am talking about old people with brain. The future belongs to the youth but in Nigeria, it is not so. Normally the government is meant to fear the masses but in Nigeria, the reverse is the case.

“The government is supposed to be afraid of us and they would soon begin to fear us because all these things that are happening in Nigeria must stop. We cannot have just a few people benefiting at the expense of the nation.”

WANTED: US-based Nigerian who fleeced two firms of $712,000

Court

Jim-Daniels Nnah, a United States-based Nigerian accused of defrauding two companies of the sum of $712,000 (approximately N261.3 million), is wanted by the Nigerian government.

This followed a request for his extradition by the federal government to the US Department of Justice, Washington DC.

Four years ago, Nnah, through his company, Biowish TM Africa Limited, allegedly fleeced Environ-Aid Technologies Nigeria Limited and Alsa Logistics Limited of the sum under the pretence of giving them sole distributorship rights of some bio-chemicals.

The request was made by Abubakar Malami, Attorney-General of the Federation (AGF) and Minister of Justice, and was contained in a letter marked HAGF/Ext/08/14 to US Department of Justice.

This is in line with the provisions of the extradition treaty between the governments of the USA and United Kingdom (UK) of December 22, 1931, which is applicable to Nigeria.

According to Malami, Nnah obtained the money for the purpose of supplying the complainants with products made by Biowish Technologies Inc., USA.

He said the complainants alleged that the suspect neglected or refused to supply the products, thereby stealing or converting the money to his personal use.

Malami stated that by his alleged action, the suspect deprived the complainants of their money and the goods despite several efforts to recover the property or money.

“The complainants claimed that sometime in September 2012, their companies entered in an existing joint venture agreement with Biowish Technologies Inc., 150N Michigan Avenue, Suite 2800, Chicago, Illinois 60601, USA, to supply its products in Africa,” he said.

“For Biowish Technologies products to be sold in Africa, Jim Daniels-Nnah incorporated Biowish TM Africa to market a variety of the products ranging from Biowosh-Aqua, Biowish Odor, Biowish Remediation, Biowish Crops (fertilizer), etc.

“Relying on the information provided by the suspect, the complainant entered into separate agreements with Biowish TM Africa Limited to procure Biowosh Technologies’ products for which the sum of $712,000 was paid into Jim Daniels-Nnah’s company, Biowish TM Africa Limited and IC&T America Inc.’s offshore accounts numbers 2531597994 and 2513861179 at BBVA Compass Bank, Houston Texas, respectively at different times.

“Unknown to the complainants, Jim Daniels-Nnah has signed two separate identical contract notes, making each of the two companies the sole distributor of the same products in Nigeria, demonstrating fraud and insincerity in handling the whole transaction.”

Malami stated further that both companies separately terminated the agreements and demanded for a refund of their money paid Nnah when he failed to deliver the products over a period of time.

He said the suspect’s inability to supply the products or refund the complainants’ money made them suspect fraud, which made them file complaints with the authorities in Nigeria.

“After a detailed investigation conducted in respect of the amount claimed to have been paid to the suspect, the Nigerian INTERPOL NCB found out, through cash transfer documents from the complainants’ bank and swift transfer records that the said sum was indeed paid into the accounts. The NCB is unable to interrogate the suspect as he is currently in the USA,” he said.

“The illegal act alleged in the case is against the laws of the Federal Republic of Nigeria and as such, I shall prosecute any act in violation of Nigerian laws relating to financial and other economic crimes.

“To do this, the Federal Government of Nigeria would require the authorities and government of the USA to take steps within the scope allowed by the US laws, to execute this request in the interest of justice, the spirit of fighting international crimes and in the ground that when a similar request is made by the USA, Nigeria will render the same assistance.

“The purpose of this letter is to request the relevant US authorities to identify the suspect in this case, arrest him with a view to extradite him to Nigeria for prosecution on charges against him and for the recovery and eventual surrender of the money to the victims’ companies.”

In a bid to stop his arrest in 2013, Daniels-Nnah dragged the Inspector General of Police (IG), Commissioner of Police (CP) Special Fraud Unit (PSFU), Chief Chris Iheanacho, his companies Environ-Aid Technologies Limited and Enercon Nigeria Limited and two others before a Federal High Court, Lagos.

The matter, which was before Justice Mohammed Yunusa, was on July 2, 2014, struck out for want of diligent prosecution, at which time the suspect had returned to the USA.

How ‘many men’ gang-raped 13-year-old girl ‘like they were in a relay race’

Asian men gang raped 13-year-old girl in Newcastle

A total of 17 men and a woman have been convicted of rape, sexual assault, human trafficking and inciting prostitution in Newcastle, United Kingdom.

It is said to be the seventh large-scale gang sex scandal to hit the UK after infamous cases from towns including Rotherham, Rochdale, Oxford and Bristol.

According to MailOnline, the victim was taken from her home and repeatedly raped by men as if they were in a ‘relay race’.

The shocking case of the vulnerable 13-year-old, who was in the care of local authorities, emerged after an 18-strong gang, was convicted of crimes against up to 108 girls.

The girl told the court how she would regularly be supplied with cash, cigarettes and drugs in exchange for sex.

The report revealed that  the convicts plied vulnerable young girls with drink and drugs at sex ‘sessions’ in city in horrific escapades that led to the arrest of  461 people .

Police said there were 278 victims in the sex ordeal, during which a convicted rapist informant was paid £10,000 by police to spy on the sex gang.

The girl, whose identity is protected, spoke of how she would be picked up in a Mercedes from the children’s home where she was living and taken to flats in Newcastle to be used by anyone who wanted her.

John Elvedge QC, prosecuting counsel, told the court that during one attack, the victim was high on cocaine while men took turns to have sex with her under a Kurdish flag.

The newspaper said the shocking details of the large-scale Asian sex gang operation could be revealed for the first time after reporting restrictions were lifted recently.

A court heard the group spent four years plying vulnerable young girls with drink and drugs at ‘sex parties’ in Newcastle.

Another victim, described in court as ‘extremely vulnerable’ and unable to look after herself, told a jury how she was 19 when she was given cannabis and raped by Abdul Milnoyee. She was then passed on to other men.

One of the gang convicted of grooming vulnerable girls on Tyneside told his wife he was going night fishing before he picked up a drunk 15-year-old on the street and raped her.

Yet another defendant was jailed for witness intimidation and assault after telling a young girl he had seen in the street that ‘everybody wanted her six feet under’.

The court heard older men preyed on immature teenagers who were plied with cocaine, cannabis, alcohol or mephedrone (M-Cat), then raped or persuaded into having sexual activity at parties known as ‘sessions’.

The case has raised huge controversy after a convicted child rapist was paid almost £10,000 of taxpayers’ money to spy on parties where under-age girls were intoxicated and sexually abused.

Steve Ashman, Northumbria Police Chief Constable, said sexual exploitation is the “challenge of our generation” and must be considered socially unacceptable in all communities.

His force launched a major investigation after receiving information from social workers and initially spoke to 108 potential victims.

Over the course of four trials, 20 young women gave evidence covering a period from 2011 to 2014.

Those prosecuted were from the Bangladeshi, Pakistani, Indian, Iraqi, Iranian and Turkish communities and were mainly British-born, with most living in the West End of Newcastle.

The court heard that one of the men convicted, 37-year-old Badrul Hussain, was heard telling a ticket collector on the Tyne and Wear Metro: “All white women are good for one thing, for men like me to f*** and use as trash, that is all women like you are worth.”

The sex ring was exposed when two women spoke to the authorities in 2013 and within weeks police had made 27 arrests under an investigation which became known as ‘Operation Shelter’.

During a series of trials that followed, one young person gave evidence on six separate occasions in front of six different juries about her plight.

RESEARCHED: Boko Haram has bombed more Islamic than Christian institutions

Bomb

Despite its standing as an Islamic fundamentalist group, Boko Haram has bombed more Islamic than Christian institutions, a study by the Combating Terrorism Center at West Point, United States Military Academy, has revealed.

The study, carried out by Jason Warner and Hilary Matfess, also showed that from April 11, 2011 to June 30, 2017, Boko Haram deployed 434 bombers to 247 different targets during 238 suicide-bombing attacks, with at least 56% of these bombers being women.

The researchers explained that Boko Harm used more women as bombers because women are unlikely to be searched by security agents, bombs are easy to conceal under the women’s conservative clothing, and the terror would rather dispense women as suicide bombers than male fighters who could engage the security agents in gun battle.

The study found that the female suicide bombers targeted mostly vulnerable civilian population and most likely to fail in carrying out the attacks than the male counterparts.

“Whereas men tend to target mostly Christian and governmental institutions, women are far more prone to target civilian locations,” said the report.

“We underline the fact that men and women appear to be equally effective at killing when they detonate, though women are noted for detonating less often than their male counterparts.”

The study analysed all Boko Haram suicide bombings from their first deployment in April 2011 to June 2017 and found that most of the terror group’s suicide bombers often failed.

It points out that Boko Haram’s use of suicide bombing accounts for roughly 15% of its total attacks, which resulted in a total of 2,283 total suicide bombing-related deaths.

According to the study, suicide attacks constitute only 21.5% of Boko Haram’s overall death toll, indicating that Boko Haram had been less effective in the use of suicide bombings to cause mass casualties than other terror groups.

“Though Boko Haram is deploying suicide bombers at a rate surprising for a Sub-Saharan African insurgency, these attacks do not constitute a major source of Boko Haram’s lethality,” the researchers said.

“When it comes to its largest suicide-bombing attacks, Boko Haram seems to have no discernible pattern regarding date, target, or nature of bomber. Importantly, we find that Boko Haram suicide bombers often fail.

“They often do not detonate, and when they do, they kill and injure fewer individuals per detonation than other groups that use suicide bombers. We also find that Boko Haram’s use of coordinated, multiple-person suicide bombings is especially ineffective.”

The study also discovered that Boko Haram bombers have tended to be most active in June and July, while most inactive in the following months.

It revealed that the terror group attacked more often on Sundays than other days of the week, probably because Sundays are usually market days, which the Boko Haram target for suicide bombing.

Contrary to general perception, Boko Haram carried out more attacks on Muslims than Christians.

“Despite the frequent characterisation of the crisis in the northeast as motivated by religion, our data shows that Boko Haram does not primarily target religious institutions,” the researchers said.

“Of the 247 suicide attack targets, just 49 were religious institutions, or 19.8% of total suicide attacks. Moreover, among Boko Haram’s suicide bombing attacks on religious targets, Islamic religious institutions were targeted more frequently than Christian institutions. From April 2011 to May 2017, 12 churches were targeted (4.9% of all targets) as compared to 37 mosques and religious Islamic leaders (comprising 14.9% of targets).”

The researchers warned that Boko Haram is at the forefront of normalizing the use of children as suicide bombers, especially female children and teenagers.

It pointed out that Boko Haram’s child suicide bombers, which have tended to target markets and bus stops, have been surprisingly effective, outstripping the casualty rate of their adult counterparts.

The researchers identified four phases in the development of Boko Haram’s suicide bombings.

“The first phase was a “learning phase” (April 8, 2011, to May 12, 2013) during which the group first began to use suicide bombers, deploying exclusively men, generally to governmental targets, while it developed operational capabilities unique to its fight.

“The second phase was a “dormant phase” (May 13, 2013, to April 14, 2014), during which time Boko Haram’s pace of suicide bombing slowed considerably due to the declared state of emergency and effective counter-terrorism efforts by the state.

“The third phase was the ‘unexpected bomber phase’ (April 15, 2014 to December 31, 2015), during which time Boko Haram recognized the strategic utility of using new demographics of women and children as bombers, leading to an increase in civilian targeting and resulting in its most lethal and injurious period.

“Finally, we suggest that the group is currently in the fourth ‘incremental innovation phase’ (January 1, 2016 to today); having been stymied in its efforts within north-eastern Nigeria, Boko Haram appears to be doubling down on its use of women and children to target new locations, including internally displaced persons (IDP) camps.”

The researchers concluded that the world will need to prepare for an inevitable fifth phase of Boko in the Haram’s deployment of suicide bombings as operational tactics.

Many commuters were left stranded on Thursday after a part of the Rivers State section of the East-West Road caved in.

The portion that collapse is located in Eleme Local Government Area of Rivers State and is close to the popular Okulu-Aleto bridge in Akpajo community.

The East-West road has gulped billions of naira since the contract for its repair was awarded in 2011. The road connects all the states in the south-south region of the country.

The building we raided doesn’t have a UN designation, says army

Soldiers

The Nigerian army says one of the buildings on which its personnel conducted a search on Friday, which is said to be housing some United Nations officials, has no sign to show it was a UN property.

Soldiers had arrived the building at around 2 am on Friday but were prevented from gaining entrance into the premises until 7 am when they eventually went in to carry out a search, allegedly looking for some smuggled weapons.

Earlier on Friday, Edward Kallon, Coordinator of UN humanitarian activities in Nigeria, had issued a statement saying that the search was unauthorized.

Kallon said the action was capable of hampering “the critical work that is being carried out every day to support the most vulnerable in the region” and called on the Nigerian government “to provide clarification”.

However, in a separate statement, the military explained that the UN facility was not specifically targeted but rather all the buildings in the area were searched, adding that there was no sign on the building to show it is being used by the UN.

According to the statement, the search became necessary as more and more Boko Haram fighters escape from the Sambisa Forest into the Maiduguri metropolis due to intensified counter-attacks by the military.

“In the last one week cordon and search operations were conducted in Jiddari-Polo, Muna Garage, Jakana amongst several other areas,” the statement read.

“On 10th August 2017, Theatre Command received information from one of its credible sources that some high value BHT suspects had infiltrated into Pompomari Bye Pass.

“It therefore became expedient to take preemptive action by combing the general area through a cordon and search operations. The operation was successfully conducted as over 30 houses were searched.

“One of such included a property, which was said to be occupied by United Nations Staff, although the property did not carry a UN designation.

“On the whole, operation in the general area was successfully concluded but no arrest was made because the suspects were not found”.

The army reiterated that the operations were being conducted “to safeguard lives and properties but not targeted at any individual or group.”

Ecobank security guard steals staffer’s ATM card, withdraws N30,000 to ‘treat ill mother’

Ifeoma Ezeanaka, an Eco bank staffer based in Aba, Abia State, almost lost N30,000 to an unknown withdrawal from her account on Thursday, July 27, 2017 but the bank’s security apparatus came to her rescue.

According to a security report seen by the ICIR, Ezeanaka received a debit alert of N30,000 when she was certain she had not sent anyone to the ATM.

Therefore, she immediately rushed down to the bank branch where the withdrawal had been made and entered a complaint.

“It was thanks to the Close Circuit Television (CCTV) camera that it was revealed that the withdrawal had been courtesy of Nwaobi Maxmillian, a security guard attached to bank where Ifeoma works,” said the report.

Maximillian had removed Ifeoma’s ATM card from her handbag while she was in the bank’s vault, and then proceeded to an ATM machine not very far from the bank to withdraw N30,000 from her account.

“He then hurried back and carefully returned the ATM card without her notice and perhaps was congratulating himself on a well-executed operation before the alert came in and ruined his party.”

When confronted, Maxmillian confessed to the crime but explained that he was pushed to the act because his mother was “ill and required money urgently for an operation”.

Further probing revealed that Ifeoma had also compromised her PIN in the past, as she usually sent security men and cleaners to make withdrawals for her from the ATM.

An official of the bank, who did not want to be named, told the ICIR that the bank would “discipline the security guard”, as it “does not tolerate acts of dishonesty from staff, no matter the circumstances”.

Humanitarian work suspended in Borno as soldiers ‘lay siege’ on UN building

Army

Nigerian soldiers have raided a building in Maiduguri, Borno State, where personnel of the United Nations are being housed.

According to Premium Times, the raid was prompted by allegations that weapons were being smuggled into the building.

Consequently, the UN has temporarily suspended all its humanitarian activities in the state.

The search of the UN building happened a day after rumours went wild on social media that Abubakar Shekau, the wanted Boko Haram leader, was taking refuge in the said building.

Soldiers arrived the rented building known as Red Roof, which also serves as a hostel for UN workers in the city, at about 2am on Friday.

A UN official who pleaded anonymity told journalists that the soldiers said they had intelligent information from the Department of State Security (DSS) that some suspicious activities were going on in the massive building, which is well fortified with high fences.

The Red Roof building belongs to late Mala Kachalla, former Borno State Governor.

“The soldiers came at about 2 a.m. and surrounded the entire area around the UN building. And at about 3 a.m., they demanded that they wanted to go into the building to search for arms.

“But the UN officials denied them access, insisting that it was against their policy to allow armed soldiers invade their offices or buildings, especially at such odd hours of the night.”

The soldiers had said they had information that arms were being ferried into the Red Roof building in large, wooden boxes.

But the UN source who spoke to journalists dismissed the allegations.

“We all know there was nothing like that because the containers that they were referring to were building materials which the UN is using to upgrade or build some structures sitting the acquired property,” he said.

“Presently the property serves as a place of accommodation for all the UN humanitarian workers in Maiduguri. When the soldiers wanted to force their way into the property, the security men had to lock the gate.”

The source said the soldiers were later allowed to enter the building by 7 am.

“They searched the entire building and found nothing. The soldiers later withdrew from the area at about 7.45 a.m,” he said.

Ahmed Shehu, a civil society leader in Borno State, who arrived the building early at dawn, condemned the soldiers’ action, saying: “Whatever may be the soldiers’ reason, the invasion was not a good indicator for security.”

Shehu added that a meeting of all civil society organizations in the state with UN officials would hold later in the day, and an official statement would be issued.

Onyema Okechukwu, spokesperson of the military command and control centre in Borno state, was not available for comments as his phone was switched off.

24-year-old Cynthia Muge second youth to win seat in Kenyan parliament

Cynthia Muge - 24-year-old female candidate defeat powerful ruling party candidate in Kenya

The news of the electoral victory of 23-year-old John-Paul Mwirigi in the Kenyan general election was yet to settle when that of Cynthia Jepkosgei Muge also broke.

Like Mwirigi, Muge, 24, also ran as an independent candidate because she could not afford the cost of her party’s nomination.

However, after the people had voted and the votes counted, the ruling Jubilee party were left regretting why they had favoured Emmanuel Kipchumba to flag the party’s flag instead of Muge.
