Sylva Sure Of Victory In Rescheduled Primary Election

Sylva

Former governor of Bayelsa State, Timipre Sylva, has said he is confident of emerging victorious in the rescheduled primaries of the All Progressives Congress, APC, to choose the party’s flag bearer for the December 5 governorship election in the state.

Sylva was declared winner of the earlier election held on September 22 but the APC national body cancelled it amidst accusations of intimidation of delegates by Sylva.

In a statement issued by the Timipre Sylva Campaign Organisation, which described the decision of the party to cancel the election as unfortunate, the aspirant said he is not deterred.

“The cancellation of the 22 September primary, where Chief Timipre Sylva was overwhelmingly voted by the APC family in our state to fly the party’s flag at the December 5 governorship election, is unfortunate,” Doifie Buokoribo said for the organisation.

“But as loyal and faithful party folks we have the serenity to accept the decision in the larger interest of our great party. We urge our teeming supporters to remain peaceful and unruffled, rest assured that all is well. Ultimately, our victory is sure. Our hope cannot be annulled,” he stated further.

The chairman of the election committee and governor of Edo State, Adams Oshiomhole, had accused Sylva of mobilising thugs to threaten officials and delegates in an election that saw other contenders call for its cancellation.

Sylva’s main challenger is former finance director of the Niger Delta Development Company, NDDC, Timi Alaibe, who along with other contenders had walked out on the last primaries, claiming that it was fraught with irregularities.

And whoever wins the new election will hope to unseat the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, candidate and incumbent governor, Seriake Dickson.

Buhari Seeks Global Support In War Against Corruption At UN Assembly

Buhari at UN

President Muhammadu Buhari in New York on Monday advocated for a redoubling of efforts by the international community in tackling corruption and has appealed for improved strategies to combat the problem.

In his address to world leaders at the 70th General Assembly of the United Nations, President Buhari vowed to recover the country’s stolen wealth stolen by its past officials and urged his counterparts to cooperate in the return stolen funds and assets to their countries of origin.

Aside corruption, Buhari further observed that cross-border financial crimes, cyber-crimes and human trafficking are major challenges of the 21st century which the international community must collectively rise up to combat the menace.

“Let me reaffirm the Nigerian government’s unwavering commitment to fight corruption and illicit financial flows. By any consideration, corruption and cross border financial crimes are impediments to development, economic growth, and the realization of the well-being of citizens across the globe.

“Nigeria is ready and willing to partner with international agencies and individual countries on a bilateral basis to confront crimes and corruption.

“In particular, I call upon the global community to urgently redouble efforts towards strengthening the mechanisms for dismantling safe havens for proceeds of corruption and ensuring the return of stolen funds and assets to their countries of origin,” the President said.

After the adoption of six essential elements in the global development sustainable goals last Friday by world leaders in New York, President Buhari also proposed the adoption of peace as a seventh essential element.

“The Secretary General has grouped the SDGs into what he calls six “essential elements” namely: Dignity, Prosperity, Justice, Partnership, Planet and People,” he observed.

“As a prerequisite to these and as we look at history and remember the terrible events that gave rise to the birth of the United Nations in 1945, I would like to propose a seventh: PEACE.

“Peace is close to the hearts of Nigerians, as we are in the front line in the war on terror. Boko Haram’s war against the people of Nigeria, Chad, Niger and Cameroon may not attract as much worldwide attention as the wars in the Middle East but the suffering is just as great and the human cost is equally high.

“This is a war between progress and chaos; between democracy and the rule of law. Boko Haram celebrates violence against the weak and the innocent and deplorably, they hide behind their perverted interpretation of Islam. Boko Haram is as far away from Islam as anyone can think of,” President Buhari declared.

The Nigerian President vowed to do all within its powers to quickly overcome the challenge of terrorism and insecurity and assuring the rescuing the Chibok girls remains one of the major objectives of his administration.

“The new Nigerian Government which I have the honour to head, moved with dispatch to put in a bold and robust strategy to defeat Boko Haram. Nigeria and her neighbours Cameroon, Chad and Niger plus Benin are working together to face this common threat within the regional framework of the Lake Chad Basin Commission.

“We have established a multinational joint task force to confront, degrade and defeat Boko Haram. We have driven them away from many of their strongholds, killed or captured many of their operatives or commanders and freed several hundreds of hostages,” President Buhari told the General Assembly.

“We are working round the clock to ensure their safety and eventual reunion with their families. The girls are constantly on our minds and in our plans,” he further said.

He condemned the new and dangerous dimension which human trafficking has assumed in the world.

“We in Africa are grieved to see hundreds of our able bodied men and women dying in the desert or drowning in the Mediterranean.

“We condemn in the strongest terms these people traffickers and will support any measures to apprehend and bring them to justice,” the President said.

The Nigerian Army says more than 200 members of Boko Haram on Friday surrendered to troops in Banki, Borno State, following Thursday’s capture of the economically strategic town.

A joint effort between the military, made up of the Nigerian Army, Air Force and Cameroonian Army, led to the capture of Banki, a town that had served as an economic melting point for Nigeria, Cameroon and Central African countries before the advent of the Boko Haram insurgency.

It is also a major fishing town.

According to Nigerian Army spokesperson, Sani Usman, troops also destroyed seven Boko Haram camps and detonated seven improvised explosive devices in the town, bringing the total number of IEDs detonated between Banki and Darel Jamal to 13.

“During the encounter to recapture the town, several Boko Haram terrorists were killed and several others were captured alive between Banki junction and Ngorosoye,” Usman said.

“The recapture of this town apart restoring Nigeria’s territory law, would improve the economic activities in that area.”

Governor Seriake Dickson of Bayelsa was on Thursday ratified as the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP’s in the December 5 governorship election, having been presented as sole candidate in the race to represent the party.

Three other contestants had earlier been disqualified and a fourth withdrew, leaving the governor to have a smooth sail.

Former President Goodluck Jonathan led the endorsement by casting his vote before other delegates at the Samson Siasia Sports Complex in the state capital, Yenagoa.

Chairman of the election panel and governor of Ekiti State, Ayo Fayose, said Dickson polled 447 out of 452 votes cast, with 5 invalidated.

Fayose said the peaceful conduct of the election showed that PDP is united.

“The election today shows that PDP is united; the transparency in the election is commendable. I must say that PDP will continue to be united not only in Bayelsa but Nigeria at large,” he said.

“The people of Bayelsa have decided to support good government of the PDP in the state. It is glaring today that the people want continuity for suitable development.”

Dickson thanked the delegates for their support and said he was committed to bringing more development to the state, adding that Deputy Governor John Jonah will remain his running mate.

The Nigerian Bar Association, NBA, in Anambra State has lent its support to the strike of the Judiciary Workers Union of Nigeria, accusing the state government of reneging on agreements reached with the workers.

Judicial workers have been on strike since May, two months after they reached an agreement with the government for their return to work.

The workers have now said they may have to be more radical should the government continue to ignore their demands, saying it is wrong for the authorities to fail to honour an agreement reached with workers.

“We demand that immediate consideration be given to the demands of the judiciary workers in Anambra State to fend off the hardship being imposed on the state and its people by the mindless closure of courts, just as we condemn the penchant of the present state government to slight lawyers and the legal industry in the state,” the association said.

“This strike is one strike too many, people are suffering, police stations are filled up with detainees waiting to go to courts, while the prisons are filled up with awaiting trial inmates,” it added.

Less than two weeks after a crane crashed in Mecca, at least 717 people have been reportedly killed and at least 805 injured in Thursday’s massive stampede in Mina, Saudi Arabia, as worshipers commemorated Jamarat, the “stoning of the devil”.

The incident happened as people moved towards the Jamarat while others returned from the opposite direction, causing chaotic collision that led to people stepping on those on the ground to safety.

Over three million people observed this year’s hajj, with reports saying the total number of casualties remains unknown, as pilgrims thronged the Jamarat as early as 3am from Muzdalifa, where they spent the night.

While six Nigerians lost their lives in the crane crash that left more than 100 dead, it is not clear if any pilgrim from the country was involved in Thursday’s incident.
