Over 400 killed, 3,500 wounded in Sudan — WHO

0

MORE than 400 people have been killed and over 3,500 others hurt due to the civil unrest in Sudan, according to the World Health Organization (WHO).

The United Nations public health agency also disclosed at least 11 attacks on health facilities had been recorded in the country since the war broke out.

At a press briefing in Geneva on Friday, April 21, the WHO spokesperson Margaret Harris said: “413 have died and 3,551 people have been injured that we know of.”

“The war has not only affected the people who have been injured during this terrible fighting but the people who needed treatment before.

“It is also taking a devastating toll on the country’s children,” she added.

Also speaking on the crisis in Sudan, UNICEF spokesperson James Elder said at least nine children have been killed and more than 50 wounded.

He warned that the fighting has put the lives of Sudanese children suffering from malnutrition at risk.

“Sudan already has one of the highest rates of malnutrition among children in the world,” Elder told reporters. “And now critical life-saving care for an estimated 50,000 severely acutely malnourished children has been disrupted. This is life threatening.”

Elder said the children with the most critical cases of malnutrition in the country are being fed with tubes because that is the only way they can be fed.

He said, “When the bombing or shelling begins outside the hospital and where medical staff need to flee, then what?”

“We need forces to immediately cease hostilities and for all parties to respect their international obligations to protect children from harm.

“As long as fighting continues, children will continue to pay the price.

“The fighting means many families are trapped, with little or no access to electricity, terrified of running out of food, water and medicine.”

Two men are at the heart of the clashes: Sudan’s military leader Abdel Fattah al-Burhan and the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF) commander, Mohamed Hamdan Dagalo.

The duo have been allies until recently. They had worked together to topple the ousted Sudanese President Omar al-Bashir in 2019 and played a pivotal role in the military coup in 2021.

However, the tension began during negotiations to integrate the RSF into the country’s military as part of plans to restore civilian rule. The clash between the duo and their loyalists is considered a struggle for dominance in Sudan.

Among those affected by the conflict are hundreds of Nigerians, including students, living in the country. The students have appealed to the Federal Government to evacuate them.

However, the refusal of the two sides to embrace calls for ceasefire has made it difficult to evacuate Nigerians trapped in Sudan.

UK: Dowden named new deputy PM after Raab’s resignation

OLIVER Dowden has been named Britain’s new Deputy Prime Minister following the resignation of Dominic Raab, who was found guilty of bullying staff during his time in government.

An independent probe by Adam Tolley KC upheld two of eight complaints levelled against Raab after finding he engaged in an ‘abuse or misuse of power’ that ‘undermines or humiliates’ while serving as foreign secretary, Brexit secretary and justice secretary.

Findings from the probe revealed that Raab’s conduct in the department had a ‘significant adverse effect’ on one colleague, but it cleared him of shouting or swearing at staff or raising his arms in a threatening manner as some of the complaints made about him had alleged.

It also revealed some of the complainants had never even met him, but were supporting colleagues and suggested staff had been upset by Raab’s ‘inquisitorial, direct, impatient and fastidious’ style, which included criticising their work to their face and interrupting them in meetings.

The former deputy prime minister had previously committed to resigning if the report indicted him.

“Whilst I feel duty-bound to accept the outcome of the inquiry, it dismissed all but two of the claims levelled against me,” he wrote in a resignation letter.

“I also believe that its two adverse findings are flawed and set a dangerous precedent for the conduct of good government.”

Raab accused civil servants of not being able to handle the high standards, pace and challenge that he brought. Some of his allies also branded the bullying claims against him ‘snowflake central’.

Government whip Joy Morrissey, tweeted: “Sadly, we now live in a country where the definition of bullying includes telling someone to do their job, where the slightest upset or annoyance is indulged with endless reports and inquiries”.

Meanwhile, former prisons minister Alex Chalk, has also been named the new Justice Secretary.

The FCDA noted that the closure of vehicular movement was to guarantee motorists’ safety along the road during the period, and relevant security agencies had been notified of the development.

“The motoring public is, therefore advised to follow the alternative routes provided by the contractor. Please note that the FCT VIO, the Police and the FRSC have been informed of the arrangement to provide traffic control during the period at both the roundabout and associated ramps,” the FCDA announced.

While expressing regrets over possible inconvenience the closure might cause residents, the FCDA urged motorists to comply with the directives and obey traffic rules during the period.

Sudan crisis: FG unable to evacuate Nigerians as ceasefire calls fail

THE Federal Government of Nigeria has called for a ceasefire in Sudan to enable the evacuation of its nationals trapped in the country.

The government made an official request to Sudanese authorities to be granted permission to evacuate Nigerian citizens from the country.

However, the non-adherence to the numerous calls for a ceasefire by the warring parties has made evacuating Nigerians from the country difficult.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs disclosed this in a statement released by its spokesperson, Francisca Omayuli, on Thursday, April 20.

The foreign affairs ministry expressed concern that the crisis in the country has continued to deepen.

“The non-adherence of the warring parties to numerous international calls for a ceasefire has worsened the plight of civilians and made it impossible to embark on their evacuation. Nigeria, therefore, wishes to reiterate the urgent need for an immediate ceasefire,” the statement said.

“In the meantime, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs is in contact with the Sudanese authorities and has, through the Nigerian embassy in Khartoum, made an official request for permission to evacuate Nigerian students and other members of the Nigerian community who may wish to depart the country.

“The Nigerian Embassy has created WhatsApp and Telegram platforms for the students and other Nigerians in Sudan for proper coordination and regular updates. Nigerians in the country are advised to remain indoors and contact the Embassy on any of the following numbers: +249 90 765 0702, +234 803 698 1824, +249 90 132 5359, +249 92 440 1217.”

The ICIR had earlier reported that the Federal Government was planning to rescue its nationals from Sudan following a request for evacuation from Nigerian students in the country.

The students said they are stranded, living in fear with no access to basic amenities and are facing dangerous threats.

There have been multiple attempts to reach a ceasefire agreement between the warring parties — the Sudanese army and the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF).

According to the World Health Organisation (WHO), at least 400 people have died in the fighting, and almost 3,500 more have been wounded in Khartoum, the western region of Darfur and other states.

The crisis, which began in Khartoum, is spreading to residential areas in the capital, which could increase the number of casualties.

The couple, Mr and Mrs Chinaka Nwagu, were from the Amankwo Okpala community, according to Punch Newspaper.

A source identified as Uche said the couple and the dead officers travelled from the adjoining Aboh Mbaise Local Government Area to eat at the junction before they met their death.

He claimed that armed men showed up while the victims were eating and opened fire on them.

According to the witness who spoke to Punch Newspaper, three police officers were killed at the spot; two fled to a nearby location but were chased and killed, along with a couple who owned the shop they ran into.

The witness added that the attackers took away the guns of the slain policemen.

“As they were eating, gunmen drove to the place and opened fire on them. Two out of the five policemen ran to a nearby shop where a couple sold meat pie and sachet water. After killing the three policemen, they went two the shop where the two other officers were hiding and killed them. They also killed the husband and wife that owned the shop.

“They took away their rifles and drove off. This is so unfortunate. Our community is bleeding. Everybody is confused. The couple just relocated from Lagos about one year ago. We just deposited their bodies in a mortuary. The market is shut. People here ran away out of shock and fear. This is unbelievable,” the witness said.

Attempts to speak to the spokesperson for the police in the state, Henry Okoye, were unsuccessful as he did not pick up his call. Also, he did not respond to messages sent to his phone.

In another development, the Lagos State Police Command has arraigned two men caught with a murdered woman’s phone.

The suspects, Nurudeen Shotade and Abdullahi Abubakar, were brought before a Magistrates’ Court sitting in Yaba, Lagos State, presided by Magistrate A. O. Salawu on Thursday on two counts bordering on stealing and unlawful possession of stolen items.

Confusion as INEC says suspended Adamawa REC missing

A DAY after his suspension was approved by President Muhammadu Buhari, there is confusion over the whereabouts of suspended Adamawa State Resident Electoral Commissioner (REC) Hudu Ari.

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) on Friday, April 21, said it does not know Ari’s whereabouts.

Ari was suspended by INEC after he illegally declared the governorship candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Aishatu Dahiru Binani as the winner of the Adamawa State governorship election on April 16.

The REC made the announcement while the collation of results was still going on, with incumbent governor and Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) candidate Ahmadu Fintiri leading in number of votes counted.

Speaking on Channels TV on Friday, the Chairman of INEC’s Information and Voter Education Committee, Festus Okoye said that the Commission does not know the whereabouts of the REC.

Okoye stressed that the Ari had stopped communicating with INEC, ignoring official directives.

“We don’t know where he is because, after this particular incident, the Commission wrote him and also called him on the phone. He never returned any of the calls, he never answered any of the calls.

“We asked him to report to the Commission on Sunday, we didn’t see him, we asked him to report on Monday we didn’t see him. So up till this moment, he has not reported and we don’t know his whereabouts.”

Okoye noted that it is the responsibility of the Nigerian Police to declare Ari wanted.

“Well, that is the responsibility of the Nigerian police. If they feel that his presence is absolutely needed during the investigation and he is nowhere to be found, it is their prerogative and discretion to declare him wanted.”

The INEC national commissioner said that the Commission had obtained a report from the Inspector General of Police and commenced the process for the prosecution of the suspended Adamawa Resident Electoral Commissioner.

The ICIR reported that President Muhammadu Buhari approved the suspension of the Adamawa REC on Thursday, April 20.

The development was disclosed in a statement signed by the Director of Information in the Office of the Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Willie Bassey.

The statement noted that the Adamawa State Police Commissioner, Directorate of State Services (DSS) officials and their counterparts from the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC), who aided Ari’s declaration would be investigated alongside the suspended INEC official.

The President ordered the Director-General of the DSS and Commandant-General of the NSCDC to probe their officials who were involved in the illegal act.

Gunmen abduct 13 in FCT community

0

UNIDENTIFIED gunmen have abducted 13 residents of Gaube community in the Kuje Area Council of Nigeria’s Federal Capital Territory (FCT).

According to a report, a resident of the area, Saidu Yahaya, said three women and two children were among those abducted by the gunmen during an attack on the community on Wednesday, April 19.

“The most pathetic thing is that a man called Shuaibu, who just returned from a condolence of one of his relatives that was killed by kidnappers at Kasada village, was also kidnapped with his two children,” he said.

Yahaya also disclosed that the gunmen had demanded a N10 million ransom for the release of a pregnant woman who was abducted in a separate attack earlier in the week.

He said the woman’s husband was killed by the gunmen while she, along with five others, were abducted.

The ICIR sought the reaction of the FCT Police Command on the incident.

However, Public Relations Officer (PRO) of the Command Josephine Adeh did not respond to calls at the time of filing this report.

Kuje, one of the satellite areas in the FCT, is notorious for kidnapping activities, as several cases of abduction have been recorded in the area council.

In February, gunmen attacked Munu community in Kuje, killing two people and abducting many others.

Also, in April 2022, gunmen invaded Shadadi community in the area council and abducted four family members.

Other parts of the FCT, including Abuja Municipal Area Council (AMAC) and Bwari Area Council, have also recorded cases of abduction in recent times.

Recently, gunmen attacked Grow Homes Estate in Kubwa, in the Bwari Area Council. The ICIR reported that about 20 armed men stormed the estate on March 10, and whisked at least nine persons away to an unknown destination after ransacking several houses.

Findings by The ICIR show that 69 persons were abducted in the FCT over a period of 11 months in 2021.

Eid el-Fitr: Police beef up security in FCT

THE Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Police Command beefed up security in the nation’s capital on Friday, April 21, as residents marked the Eid el-Fitr celebrations.

Units of heavily armed policemen were seen at strategic locations in the FCT. Police patrol vans, conveying armed policemen, were also observed patrolling various streets as residents went about their activities.

At the Lugbe Praying Ground, a team of heavily armed police officers was seen providing security for the Muslim faithfuls who were observing the Eid el-Fitr prayers.

Security was also beefed up at the busy Berger Bridge Roundabout.

A team of heavily armed policemen in combat outfit was seen at the location.

It was the same scenario at several locations in the FCT, including Wuse Market, Banex, Area 1 bridge and others.

Police units were also observed at checkpoints along the expressway leading to the Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport, Abuja.

The Inspector-General of Police, IGP Usman Alkali Baba, had earlier on Thursday, April 20, charged Commissioners of Police (CPs) and Tactical Commanders in the 36 states and the FCT and their supervisory Assistant Inspectors, General of Police (AIGs), to beef-up security ahead of the Eid-el-Fitr celebration.

The IGP also ordered adequate deployment of officers and assets to critical locations, especially Eid Prayer Grounds and recreation centres, to build confidence amongst the citizens and fun seekers.

The Police boss charged officers and men of the Nigeria Police Force to critically assess threat-prone areas, and engage in stop and search, raids on black spots, and other anti-crime strategies to sustain peace and public safety across the country during the festive period.

The Force Public Relations Officer (FPRO) Muyiwa Adejobi, who disclosed the IGP’s directive in a statement, said policemen deployed for the celebrations were warned to be professional and mindful of the fundamental rights of the citizens while discharging their responsibilities with all sense of decorum and alertness.

“The IGP congratulates the entire Muslim ummah in the country on the forthcoming Eid-el-Fitr celebrations, which is a culmination of the Ramadan period.

“He has also assured of continued efforts aimed at decimating crimes and criminality and improving Public safety and security across the country.

“In the same vein, the IGP enjoined Muslim faithful to celebrate and enjoy the beauty of the significant season while remaining security conscious,” Adejobi stated.
