Presidency in ‘panic mode’ over Shettima — Datti Ahmed associate says

A palpable panic mode seemed to have enveloped the presidency, especially the office of the Vice President, Kashim Shettima, following speculations over his possible replacement by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu in 2027, a public affairs analyst has said.

Iliyasu Gadu, who is also a political associate of Datti Baba Ahmed, the running mate of Labour Party’s Presidential candidate in the 2023 election, Peter Obi, made this known in a statement made available to journalists in Abuja on Sunday July 7, 2027.

Gadu, while reacting to a statement credited to Stanley Nkwocha, media aide to Shettima, over a recent interview granted by Datti on Arise Television, said the panic mode comes as “negative speculations are currently swirling around the VP’s fate leading to a loss of nuanced thinking and action on sensitive matters.”

The ICIR reports that Nkwocha in a statement said Baba-Ahmed’s appearance on Arise Television, where he canvassed support for a political coalition and questioned Shettima’s continued stay in office, was “nothing but another public display of frustration.”

In the statement issued on Friday, Nkwocha, senior special assistant to the president on media and communications (office of the vice-president), described Baba-Ahmed’s criticism as “obsessive vituperation” and “beer parlour gossip”.

“In the said interview, Baba-Ahmed expressed his frustrations on why the president had yet to remove the vice-president from office for not a single reason or offence he evidently linked the vice-president with, but merely to soothe his ego and wish,” the statement reads, adding: “Well, the bad news for him is that his frustration is just beginning.”

Describing the statement as rather distasteful and indecorous, Gadu said: “In his haste to defend his boss, the SA failed to exercise the necessary caution as the case demands and instead proceeded to launch tirades at Senator Datti even going personal at him.”

“Nkwocha allowed himself to unnecessarily flip over Datti’s remarks which to all intents and purposes was inconclusive . In his statement on Shettima, the Senator made what amounted to a veiled remark and resisted the anchor Aniagolu’s prodding to reveal more of what he knew about the VP.

“The SA should have refrained from going on overdrive as he did in his response especially as Senator had stopped short of providing full details of what he was alluding to the VP’s shortcomings.

“All he should have done in response was to have acknowledged Datti’s’s statement and to say that since it lacked details and the onus lied on him to prove his claims on the VP to the Nigerian public.

“This would have been a more nuanced response expected of the publicist of a highly placed public official who happens to be by order of protocol the occupant of a second highest office in the land.”

Gadu said Datti did not talk about Shettima alone in the interview, saying: “He commented on former VP Atiku Abubakar, Nasir El-Rufai, Peter Obi and Rotimi Amaechi all of whom are high personalities in their own rights; but they all know better than to challenge Senator Datti.”

“To put it into context, Nkwocha’s response reflect the fit of jitters and paranoia which seemed to have gripped the Tinubu presidency in view of recent developments in the polity.

“A palpable panic mode seemed to have set into the presidency especially the office of the Vice President Shettima as negative speculations are currently swirling around his fate leading to a loss of nuanced thinking and action on sensitive matters.”

“But such is the current state of dysfunction in the VP’s office that even a veteran like Nkwocha who ought to know better is resorting to name calling in order to defend
his principal in a manner that brings disrepute to the exalted office of the VP,” Gadu said.

FG places Obasanjo-era presidential jet for sale in Switzerland

THE Federal Government has listed its over 20-year-old Boeing 737-700 Business Jet for sale through AMAC Aerospace, based in Basel, Switzerland.

Acquired for $43 million in 2005 under former President Olusegun Obasanjo, the aircraft is now up for sale just months after President Bola Tinubu switched to a refurbished Airbus A330-200 last August, amid economic challenges and growing public scrutiny.

The aircraft was advertised for sale on the United States-based aircraft marketplace Controller observed by the ICIR on Sunday, July 6.

According to the aviation marketplace, the aircraft has undergone inspections and maintenance in preparation for its sale.

After more than 19 years in service, the Presidency stated that the BBJ had become increasingly costly to maintain and faced growing safety concerns, especially following a mechanical incident during an official trip to Saudi Arabia in April 2024.

Nigeria’s presidential air fleet comprises approximately 10 aircraft, which includes fixed-wing aircraft such as a 13-year-old Gulfstream Aerospace G550, a Gulfstream G500, two Falcon 7Xs, a Hawker 4000, and a Challenger 605.

The Buhari and Tinubu administrations had pledged to reduce the size of the Presidential Air Fleet to improve cost-efficiency.

Despite these commitments, the Boeing Business Jet 737 with tail number 5N-FGT remained in use as the presidential aircraft until August 2024, when the Tinubu administration transitioned to a refurbished Airbus A330-200, now registered as 5N-FGA.

The ICIR reports that the aircraft was acquired for roughly $100m, approximately N150bn from a repossessed German bank asset, arrived in France for initial maintenance and reconfiguration in mid-2024.

However, since February 2025, the president has been using a San Marino-registered Boeing Business Jet (registration: T7-NAS).

Insecurity: Tinubu orders military to tackle terrorists, separatists

PRESIDENT Bola Tinubu has directed the Nigerian Armed Forces and security agencies to take firm and decisive action against terrorists, bandits, insurgents, and separatist groups undermining the country’s unity and stability.

Vice President Shettima, delivering President Tinubu’s message at the grand finale of the 2025 Nigerian Army Day Celebration held on Sunday, July 6 in Kaduna, affirmed that the military has the full support of the Presidency to act boldly and without hesitation.

“To the officers and soldiers of the Nigerian Army, I say this with absolute clarity: the time to rise is now. You have my full authorisation and the trust of the Nigerian people to confront and defeat those who seek to undermine our nation.

“You are my confidence, my support, and my prayers,” Tinubu said.

The ICIR reported that in June 2022, while accepting the All Progressives Congress (APC) presidential ticket, Tinubu promised to restore peace and eliminate criminals. On the campaign trail Vice President Kashim Shettima even promised to personally lead troops across the country, saying Tinubu would handle the economy while he focused on security.

However, two years into President Bola Tinubu’s administration, insecurity remains a widespread and persistent challenge across many Nigerian states. Despite promises to combat terrorism, banditry, and violent crimes, the country continues to witness killings, kidnappings for ransom, and attacks on rural communities.

The president in his latest speech labeled terrorism, insurgency, banditry, and separatist movements as serious existential threats, stressing that they can no longer be treated as mere disturbances.

“These evils do not discriminate, they destroy churches and mosques alike and orphan children without asking their tribe or faith,” he said.

The president also reaffirmed the federal government’s steadfast support for the military, vowing continued investment in modern weaponry, intelligence gathering, and personnel to safeguard Nigeria’s sovereignty and security.

In an emotional tribute to fallen heroes and wounded soldiers, the president pledged that their sacrifices would always be remembered and honored.

“Many of our finest have fallen in the line of duty. Some now lie in silence beneath the soil of a grateful nation, others carry the wounds of oath as living reminders of sacrifices made in our name.

“Their blood will not be shed in vain; their memory will endure through generations,” he stated.

The ICIR reported that Tinubu inherited a deeply rooted security crisis from his predecessor, Muhammadu Buhari. But instead of improvement, recent months have seen a surge in violence across regions, raising concerns about the government’s capacity or willingness to protect its citizens.

From Benue to Borno, Plateau to Niger, and Ondo to Sokoto, state governors are struggling to contain the menace, as armed groups unleash chaos, displace communities, and cripple local economies, particularly agriculture.

Police declare two officials wanted over assault on LG administrator in Rivers

THE Rivers State Police Command has declared two senior officials of the Ahoada East Local Government Area wanted for their alleged roles in the violent assault on the council’s Sole Administrator, Goodluck Iheanachor.

The officials are the council’s Chief Security Officer, Hector Ekakita, and the Chief of Staff, Aloni Olodi.

Iheanachor, one of 23 administrators appointed by the State Sole Administrator, Ibok-Ete Ibas (rtd), was reportedly attacked on June 20, 2025, at the Ahoada East Council Secretariat.

In a statement released on Sunday by the spokesperson of the state police command, Grace Iringe-Koko, the two officials are accused of criminal conspiracy, stealing, assault occasioning harm, and attempted murder.

According to the statement, the duo allegedly led a group of about 30 youths who stormed the council office, assaulted Iheanachor, stole his personal and official belongings—including mobile phones and documents and forced him under duress to sign a resignation letter.

“The Rivers State Police Command has declared the following individuals wanted for criminal conspiracy, stealing, assault occasioning harm, and attempted murder in connection with the violent attack on the Sole Administrator of Ahoada-East Local Government Area, Hon. Goodluck Iheanachor, which occurred on 20th June 2025 at the Council Secretariat, Ahoada East,” the statement read.

Iringe-Koko added that both officials ignored previous police invitations to report for questioning.

“Despite a prior public notice and formal invitation to report to the Police State h

eadquarters for questioning, the  suspects have blatantly ignored the directive,” she said.

“These individuals, alongside a gang of about thirty persons, are alleged to have conspired to assault the Sole Administrator, inflicted bodily harm on him, forcefully obtained his signature under duress, stole his mobile phones and vital documents, and carted away both personal and official properties from his office.”

Iringe-Koko confirmed that Iheanachor is still undergoing treatment for injuries sustained during the attack.

The Commissioner of Police, Olugbenga Adepoju, has now declared the suspects wanted and urged them to turn themselves in.

“They are hereby advised, in their own interest, to report to the Police State Headquarters, Moscow Road, Port Harcourt, immediately,” the statement said.

Adepoju also warned that anyone caught aiding or harbouring the suspects would face prosecution.

“The Police Commissioner warns that anyone found aiding, hiding, or assisting the wanted individuals to evade arrest will face the full weight of the law. The Rivers State Police Command remains resolute in its commitment to justice and ensuring public peace and safety,” Iringe-Koko added.

The command called on members of the public with useful information about the suspects’ whereabouts to contact the Police Headquarters or call any of the dedicated police hotlines.

Israel sends delegation to Qatar for ceasefire ahead Netanyahu US trip

AN Israeli official has confirmed that a delegation has traveled to Qatar on Sunday, July 6, to discuss a potential ceasefire and hostage deal in Gaza, just hours before Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu was set to depart for Washington to meet with United States President Donald Trump.

The ICIR reported that public pressure is growing on Netanyahu to negotiate a permanent ceasefire and bring an end to the war in Gaza, a move resisted by some hardline members of his right-wing coalition.

On Saturday evening, crowds gathered at a public square in Tel Aviv near the Defense Ministry headquarters, demanding a ceasefire agreement and the return of the roughly 50 hostages still held in Gaza. Waving Israeli flags, chanting, and holding posters bearing images of the captives, protesters called for urgent action.

Some family members of the hostages, who joined the demonstration, expressed concern that the proposed deal might not secure the immediate return of all those still in captivity.

Palestinian group Hamas announced on Friday that it had responded “in a positive spirit” to a US-backed Gaza ceasefire proposal, just days after President Trump stated that Israel had agreed to the “necessary conditions to finalize” a 60-day truce.

However, highlighting the ongoing challenges in the negotiations, a Palestinian official from a militant group allied with Hamas said there were still concerns regarding the flow of humanitarian aid, access through the Rafah crossing between southern Gaza and Egypt, and the lack of a clear timetable for Israeli troop withdrawals.

Netanyahu’s office stated that the changes Hamas requested to the ceasefire proposal were “unacceptable to Israel.” However, it added that the Israeli delegation would still travel to Qatar to “continue efforts to secure the return of our hostages based on the Qatari proposal to which Israel has agreed.”

Netanyahu, set to meet with President Trump on Monday, has consistently insisted that Hamas must be disarmed, a condition the militant group has so far refused to address.

The ICIR reported that the bloodshed in the decades-old Israeli-Palestinian conflict was triggered on October 7, 2023, when Hamas attacked southern Israel, killing around 1,200 people and taking 251 hostages.

IGP approves deployment of police commissioners to five states

THE Inspector-General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, has approved the deployment of new Commissioners of Police to five state commands and two strategic departments.

According to a statement released on Saturday July 5, 2025 by the Force Public Relations Officer, Olumuyiwa Adejobi, the postings which take immediate effect are aimed at improving security management across the country.

“These postings are in furtherance of the IGP’s vision to ensure professional leadership in critical areas and enhance the operational effectiveness of the Force,” the statement read.

The IGP tasked the newly deployed officers with delivering quality leadership and upholding the highest standards of professionalism in their new roles.

“The IGP charges them to uphold the principles of professionalism and quality leadership towards ensuring their various states are rid of criminal elements who threaten national security,” Adejobi added.

He explained that the strategic deployments are designed to leverage the officers’ vast policing experience to combat insecurity, maintain public order, and reinforce the fight against criminality nationwide.

“The IGP, while reassuring members of the public of the Nigeria Police Force’s commitment to ensuring a safer and more secure nation, has called for the continued support and collaboration of citizens in the collective fight against crime and criminality,” Adejobi said.

The newly posted Commissioners are: Naziru D. Abdulmajid, to Borno State Command, Bello Rasheed Afegbua, to Cross River State, Dahiru Mohammed, to Jigawa State Command, Adebowale Lawal, to Ondo State Command, Ibrahim Gotan, to Osun State Command, Eloho Edwin Okpoziakpo, to the Department of Training and Development, Force Headquarters, and Olusegun Eyitayo Omosayin, to the FCID Annex, Gombe State, as CP General Investigation.

Hamas: We are ready to start ceasefire talks ‘immediately’

HAMAS has announced it’s readiness to begin talks “immediately” on a proposed ceasefire in Gaza, as Israel’s ongoing offensive killed 20 people on Saturday, according to civil defence agency

The announcement followed consultations with other Palestinian factions and came ahead of Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s planned visit to Washington on Monday, where President Donald Trump is urging an end to the war, now in its 21st month.

The ICIR reported that United States President Donald Trump unveiled what he described as a “final proposal” for a 60-day ceasefire, stating that he expected a response from both sides within hours.

“The movement is ready to engage immediately and seriously in a cycle of negotiations on the mechanism to put in place” the terms of a draft US-backed truce proposal received from mediators, the militant group said in a statement.

Hamas ally, Islamic Jihad, expressed support for the ceasefire talks but insisted on “guarantees” that Israel would not resume its attacks after the hostages held in Gaza are released.

On Friday, Netanyahu reiterated his commitment to bringing the hostages home, following mounting domestic pressure over their situation.

When asked about Hamas’s response while aboard Air Force One on Friday, Trump said, “That’s good. I haven’t been briefed yet. We need to get this over with, we have to do something about Gaza.”

According to Palestinian sources familiar with the negotiations, the latest proposal includes a “60-day truce,” during which Hamas would release half of the surviving Israeli hostages in Gaza, believed to be 22, in exchange for Israel freeing a number of Palestinian prisoners and detainees.

Of the 251 hostages taken by Palestinian militants during the October 2023 attack, 49 remain in Gaza, including 27 who, according to the Israeli military, are presumed dead.

The conflict in Gaza erupted after Hamas launched an attack in October 2023, triggering a large-scale Israeli offensive aimed at eliminating Hamas and securing the return of all hostages taken by Palestinian militants.

Repeated attempts to broker a new truce have collapsed, largely due to Israel’s refusal to accept Hamas’s demand for assurances that any ceasefire would be permanent.

A previous round of negotiations collapsed in May, with both Hamas and Israel accusing each other of causing the breakdown.

Family, football community bid farewell to football legend, Jota

FAMILY, friends, and football stars  gathered on Saturday, July 5, to pay their final respects to Liverpool and Portugal forward Diogo Jota and his brother, just two days after the tragic car crash that claimed their lives.

Saturday’s funeral service took place at 0900 GMT, and was held in his hometown of Gondomar, near Porto in Igreja Matriz Church.

Portugal national team coach Roberto Martinez attended the service, along with several top Portuguese players, including Manchester City’s Bernardo Silva,  Ruben Dias, and Manchester United’s Bruno Fernandes.

The ICIR reported that Jota, 28, and Andre Silva, 25, died on Thursday after their vehicle veered off a motorway in northwestern Spain and became engulfed in flames. This tragedy occured a week after the Portugal forward had got married.

The brothers were reportedly on their way to catch a ferry from northern Spain to England, where Jota was set to rejoin Liverpool following his summer break.

Their bodies were returned to Portugal after being identified by family members, with a wake held in their honor on Friday, July 4.

Jota’s death came just two weeks after he married his longtime partner, Rute Cardoso, following a grueling season in which he played a key role in Liverpool’s Premier League triumph. The couple had three children, with their youngest born last year.

Born in Porto, Jota began his football journey as a young boy in nearby Gondomar, while Silva played in Portugal’s lower leagues.

Their passing has sparked an outpouring of grief and condolences from the global football community and Portuguese officials alike.

Those who came to pay their respects included a childhood friend, Portuguese President Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa, Prime Minister Luis Montenegro, Jota’s agent Jorge Mendes, and FC Porto president André Villas-Boas.

At the Diogo Jota Football Academy, near Gondomar SC where the former Porto and Atletico Madrid star began his career, mourners set up a heartfelt memorial with flowers, scarves, candles, and football shirts.

NLC vows to resist move to decentralise minimum wage

THE Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) has declared its firm opposition to any attempt by the National Assembly to transfer labour matters, including the national minimum wage, from the Exclusive Legislative List to the Concurrent List.

The move would give individual states the power to determine the wages of their workers.

NLC President, Comrade Joe Ajaero, issued the warning on Friday during the meeting of the Central Working Committee’s National Administrative Council held in Abeokuta, the capital of Ogun State.

Describing the proposed action as an exercise in futility, Ajaero argued that the issue of minimum wage is globally regarded as a national matter in accordance with International Labour Organisation conventions, which recognise member countries as unified entities rather than a collection of sub-national units.

He accused lawmakers of attempting to dismantle the national wage framework and shift essential labour responsibilities to the states. This includes the proposed establishment of state industrial courts to handle wage disputes independently, a move he said violates international labour principles.

According to Ajaero, “The National Assembly should not proceed with this unless members are willing to allow their respective states to determine their own salaries. If they attempt to sneak labour issues into the Concurrent List, we will mobilise Nigerian workers to resist it through protests, even on election day.”

While addressing journalists after the meeting, Ajaero reiterated that organised labour would resist any effort to undermine the minimum wage law. He called on lawmakers to uphold justice and protect the welfare of the citizens they represent.

He stated that, “Across the world, minimum wage laws are designed to protect workers. In Nigeria, the minimum wage is fixed at seventy thousand naira. The law does not prevent states from paying higher wages, and in fact, several states already do.”

Ajaero warned that allowing states to determine their own minimum wages could endanger the welfare of workers across the country. He also clarified that the NLC was not aware of any state that had refused to implement the newly approved minimum wage.

On the issue of local government autonomy, he emphasized the need to seek a clear interpretation of the Supreme Court’s ruling to ensure its proper enforcement in line with constitutional provisions.

Recall that a bill seeking to remove the negotiation on minimum wage from the exclusive list to the concurrent list passed the second reading in the House of Representatives on February 23, 2021 leading to protest by the union.

According to the sponsor, Garba Mohammed (APC Kano), the bill is to allow both the federal and state governments to freely negotiate minimum wage “with their workers in line with our federalism.”

But the NLC opposed the plan, describing the bill as an attempt to undermine Nigeria’s working class.

Amid Lassa fever outbreak, Edo confirms 86 cases of dengue fever

THE Edo State government has confirmed an outbreak of dengue fever, with 86 cases recorded across the state.

This development comes as the state continues to grapple with Lassa fever outbreak, which has resulted in 24 deaths out of 137 confirmed cases since the start of the year.

Edo State commissioner for health, Cyril Oshiomhole, announced the dengue fever outbreak during a press briefing in Benin. He stated that an Emergency Operations Centre had been activated to coordinate the response.

The Director of Public Health, Stephenson Ojiefoh, has been appointed as Incident Manager to lead the efforts to contain the disease.

“The Edo State ministry of health confirms the outbreak of dengue fever. So far, 86 cases have been reported. We’ve activated surveillance systems, are managing reported cases, implementing vector control, and carrying out environmental sanitation in affected communities,” Oshiomhole said.

He explained that dengue fever is a viral illness transmitted by Aedes mosquitoes, especially Aedes aegypti, and spreads quickly in areas with poor sanitation and stagnant water.

The commissioner urged residents to keep their environment clean, eliminate mosquito breeding sites, cover water containers, use insect repellents, and sleep under mosquito nets to prevent infection.

Oshiomhole also reported that two cases of yellow fever had been confirmed, with one fatality. Additionally, the state has recorded eight cases of monkeypox and eight cases of diphtheria, the latter resulting in three deaths.

He reassured residents that the administration of Governor Monday Okpebholo remains committed to protecting public health and will continue to respond aggressively to all disease outbreaks.

Dengue fever is a viral infection transmitted primarily by the Aedes aegypti mosquito, which is most active during the day. The disease is common in tropical and subtropical regions, particularly in areas with poor sanitation and stagnant water where mosquitoes breed. Symptoms of dengue fever include high fever, severe headache, joint and muscle pain, skin rashes, and in some cases, bleeding.

Prevention focuses on reducing mosquito exposure and eliminating breeding sites. This includes covering water containers, clearing stagnant water, and ensuring proper waste disposal.

Individuals are advised to use insect repellents, wear protective clothing, and sleep under mosquito nets—especially during the day when the Aedes mosquito is most active. Public health efforts such as fumigation, environmental sanitation, and community education are also crucial in controlling the spread of the disease.
