Lion kills zoo keeper in Ibadan

Hamzat Oyekunle, one of the zoo attendants at Agodi Garden, Ibadan, Oyo State has died from injuries he sustained from an attack by one of the lions at the zoo.

In a statement issued in Ibadan by Yinka Fatoki, Executive Secretary, Bureau of Investment Promotion, (BIP) Oyo State Government has ordered the immediate closure of Agodi Zoo over Oyekunle’s death.

Fatoki said the decision was to safeguard the lives of patrons.

According to him, government had also taken the decision based on a report received from AM & C, the company managing the Zoo that one of the lions at the zoo had accidentally attacked one of the attendants.

He quoted the report as saying: “one of the lions at the Zoo had accidentally attacked one of the attendants, Mr Hamzat Oyekunle popularly known as Baba Olorunwa.

“Oyekunle was reported to have later died from injuries sustained from the incident.”

He stated that the incident was surprising and sad because Oyekunle had fed the lion for over five years and was known to have had a very good relationship with all the animals in the zoo.

He said that the lions have been evacuated pending further investigations.

“The incident is unfortunate and sad as the deceased had fed the lions for over five years.

“He was known to have had a very good relationship with all the animals in the zoo,” the statement read.

Ekiti NLC says Fayose owing workers eight months salary

The Ekiti State chapter of the Nigeria Labour Congress, NLC, says Ayodele Fayose, the State Governor owes workers between five and eight months salary arrears.

This is following claims by Fayose during a TV interview in Lagos on Thursday, that Ekiti workers are owed only for four months.

Ade Adesanmi, the Ekiti State Chairman of the NLC,  said the Governor was being economical with the truth.

“As we speak, the civil servants are owed five months’ salary arrears, Adesanmi said.

“Local government, eight months’ salaries; and institutions like College of Education, Ikere, College of Heath Technology, Ijero and Ekiti State University, Ado Ekiti, are owed seven months’ salaries.”

This comes barely two days after Fayose officially announced his intention to run for the 2019 presidential election under the platform of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, despite the fact that the party had zoned that position to the North.

During the event, Fayose lambasted the Muhammadu Buhari-led federal government for, according to him, setting Nigeria backwards and leaving the people in poverty, anger and frustration.

Nigeria won’t break up under my watch… Five key things Buhari said in his independence speech

President Muhammadu Buhari traditionally addressed the nation in a nationwide broadcast to celebrate Nigeria’s 57 independence anniversary and said he would not allow Nigeria to be dismembered by agitations for restructuring.

I CANNOT ALLOW NIGERIA TO BE DISMEMBERED

He said “Recent calls on re-structuring, quite proper in a legitimate debate, has let in highly irresponsible groups to call for dismemberment of the country. We cannot and we will not allow such advocacy”.

According to him, those who are routing for restructuring through violence were not in 1967 during the Nigerian civil war and have no idea of the sad tale of its outcome.

“As a young Army Officer, I took part from the beginning to the end in our tragic civil war costing about 2m lives, resulting in fearful destruction and untold suffering. Those who are agitating for a re-run were not born by 1967 and have no idea of the horrendous consequences of the civil conflict which we went through” Buhari said.

“I am very disappointed that responsible leaders of these communities do not warn their hot-headed youths what the country went through. Those who were there should tell those who were not there, the consequences of such folly.

“At all events, proper dialogue and any desired constitutional changes should take place in a rational manner, at the National and State Assemblies. These are the proper and legal fora for National debate, not some lop-sided, un-democratic body with pre-determined set of objectives.

“Government is keeping up the momentum of dialogue with stakeholders in the Niger Delta to keep the peace. We intend to address genuine grievances of the communities.

“Government is grateful to the responsible leadership of those communities and will pursue lasting peace in the Niger Delta”.

POLITICAL FREEDOM

In the address, the President remarked, that Nigeria has recorded appreciable gains in political freedom.

His words: “In the past two years, Nigeria has recorded appreciable gains in political freedom. A political Party at the Centre losing elections of State Governor, National Assembly seat and even State Assemblies to the opposition parties is new to Nigeria”.

“Added to these are complete freedoms to associate, to hold and disseminate opinions. Such developments clearly attest to the country’s growing political development. But like all freedoms, this is open to abuse”.

WE ARE WORKING TO SECURE RELEASE OF REMAINING CHIBOK GIRLS

The President said his government is working round the clock to ensure release of the remaining Chibok girls, as well as other persons in Boko Haram captivity.

“Government will continue to support the Armed Forces and other security agencies to fight not only terrorism, but kidnapping, armed robberies, herdsmen/farmers violence and to ensure peace, stability and security in our country” he said.

He called on Nigerians to be grateful to our gallant Armed Forces for rolling back the frontiers of Boko Haram’s terrorism, defeating them and reducing them to cowardly attacks on soft and vulnerable targets.

Nigeria, according to him, is grateful to its neighbours and the international community for the collective efforts to defeat this world-wide menace of terrorism.

“Not even the most organized and most equipped police and security forces in the world can escape the menace of modern day terrorism, as we have seen in recent years in Europe and other parts of the world”.

“But we are not letting up. Our Armed Forces in an effort to enhance the operational capability of troops of OPERATION LAFIYA DOLE have established Mobile Strike Teams in the North East. These will ensure the final push to wipe out the remnants of Boko Haram.

“In addition, through targeted air strikes most of the leadership and identified logistics bases and routes of the insurgents have been neutralized. The Armed Forces have established a Naval presence in the Lake Chad Basin as part of the coordinated military efforts to curtail the movements or re-emergence of the sect in the area.

WE KNEW FIGHTING CORRUPTION WON’T BE EASY

President Buhari said he knew fighting corruption which he said his party promised was not going to be a ‘straightforward task’

He said “We are fully aware that fighting corruption was never going to be a straightforward task. We expected corrupt elements to use any weapon to fight back, mainly judicial obstruction and political diversion. But we are determined to eradicate corruption from our body politic”.

He said with all measures put in place to fight corruption, the CHANGE would soon become real in the country.

“By not asking for and refusing to accept a bribe, by reporting unethical practices or by blowing a whistle, together we can beat corruption. The government for its part will work for accountability at all levels – Federal, State and Local Governments. CHANGE will then be real”.

POWER IS A HUGE PROBLEM

In the address, the President admitted that power remains a huge problem in the country.

“As of September 12th, production of power reached an all — time high of 7,001 Megawatts. Government is increasing its investment, clearing up the operational and financial log jam bedeviling the industry. We hope to reach 10,000 Megawatts by 2020”, he said.

“Key priorities include better energy mix through solar and Hydro technologies. I am glad to say that after many years of limbo, Mambilla Power Project has taken off.

Kanu was not arrested, he is in London, says Orji Uzor-kalu

Orji Uzor-Kalu, the former governor of Abia State, says Nnamdi Kanu, the leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra, IPOB, has fled to the United Kingdom.

Kanu’s whereabouts have remained unknown since soldiers allegedly invaded his hometown in Umuahia, the Abia State capital on September 14.

His younger brother had alleged that the soldiers whisked him away after that raid, and Ifeanyi Ejiofor, Kanu’s lawyer has filed an application in court seeking that Tukur Buratai, the Chief of Army Staff, be compelled to produce his client.

But Uzor-Kalu told The Punch newspaper during an interview that Kanu is not in military custody but had fled to London.

“Kanu was not taken away by the military . Kanu went to Malaysia from where he travelled to the United Kingdom,” Uzor-Kalu said.

“Nnamdi Kanu is in London right now as we speak . He was not arrested by anybody . He left the country on his own.

“One of his relations has spoken to me and explained everything because I wanted to see him and talk to him wherever he was and see how I could meet some Federal Government officials on his issue .

“I also wanted to see ways of talking to the President about him, and find common ground but his family told me that he has left the country , unless they are lying to me.

“I believe, whether he had left the country or not, he is not with the military because I asked the Commander of the 14 Brigade, Brig. -Gen. A.K Ibrahim, who is a very fine and good soldier, well educated and dedicated, and he told me that they don’t know his whereabouts and I am sure, the Department of State Services have the same information.

“I also visited the commissioner of police and he said he didn’t know his whereabouts and that they are also looking for him.”

It was reported on Saturday that the British High Commission in Nigeria had written to the federal government asking for the status and whereabouts of Kanu, who is also a British citizen.

I created more states to weaken agitations for secession, says IBB

0

Ibrahim Babangida, a former military president has revealed that he deliberately formulated policies and projects among which were the creation of states to weaken what he called unwholesome agitations for secession.

In a message to mark Nigeria’s 57th independence anniversary, Babangida said “the resilience of the armed forces of Nigeria to curtail secessionist agitations throughout our nation’s post-independence has reduced tensions and unnecessary disruption of lives and property.”

He emphasized that“all Nigerians must always embrace peace and dialogue as they are the only antidotes for conflict resolution.

Babangida noted that though the nation is bedeviled with senseless agitations and conflicts, there was need for careful appraisal of our journey to nationhood.

“As an active participant in the Civil War and a retired military officer, with the hard lesson learnt, I will never be tired of calling for the oneness and unity of our great nation,” he said.

“We will forever be ready to sacrifice for a united and prosperous Nigeria whenever the need arises.

“During our tenure in government we deliberately formulated policies, programmes, projects and even the creation of states to further weaken unwholesome agitations for secession and promote mutual and peaceful coexistence devoid of ethnic, religious and regional discriminations.”

Babangida urged government at all levels to continue to encourage mutual tolerance and protect the life of every Nigerian anywhere in the country.

He urged Nigerians to pray and work towards peace and progress of the nation and to those “beating the war drums”, Babangida advised them to “sheathe their swords and support the government in addressing security and economic challenges.”

“We should support the government in addressing the security and economic challenges as I urge Nigerians to extend their gestures with a hand of fellowship to one another and assist those affected by natural disasters, conflicts and communal clashes that are presently confined at various Internally Displaced Persons Camps (IDPs).”

Ibadan family-heads to Ajimobi: We will remove you if you depose Olubadan

0

The Authentic Mogajis (family heads) in Ibadanland have cautioned Abiola Ajimobi, the Governor of Oyo State against any attempt to suspend or depose Oba Saliu Adetunji, Olubadan of Ibadanland noting that he will also be removed unceremoniously from office.

The Mogajis also cautioned the Governor against what they described as his “unguarded verbal assaults” on the monarch.

In a press statement by Olawale Oladoja Akinsola (Akinsola Compound, Opopo Labiran) and Chief Abbas Oloko (Oloko Compound, Kobomoje), their Spokespersons, the Mogajis said the verbal assault of the governor against Olubadan was “the height of impunity and misuse of power”.

They said Ajimobi had since Monday’s invasion of the Olubadan’s palace by unknown gunmen, who shot sporadically, been telling the whole world that “Olubadan’s cup was full but for the respect he had for him as a father”.

Describing such utterances as a threat to the revered monarch, the family heads asked the governor to stop the assault or risk the wrath of all Ibadan sons and daughters.

Should Ajimobi change his mind and make real his threat, the Mogajis said: “Our families will rise to remove him unceremoniously too.”

The family heads also said they would no longer fold their arms and allow miscreants to turn the state to a war theater following Monday’s shooting at the palace, adding: “There is a limit to human endurance of illicit acts.”

According to the statement, Ajimobi had uttered derogatory statements against the monarch more than three times in recent time.

Among such statements quoted by the family heads were when Ajimobi said one of the Queens in the palace was his errand girl in the past, disclosure of the amount he spent on Olubadan’s coronation and the dethronement threat.

The statement reads in part: “Yes our governor, Senator Abiola Ajimobi of Oyo state has executive power to suspend or remove Olubadan of Ibadan land Oba Saliu Adetunji”.

“But he shouldn’t forget that we the people of the state also have the power to call for his removal through the House of Assembly.

“We are all from Ibadan land and if you suspend our king you will be removed from office unceremoniously.

“We use this opportunity to call on Inspector General of Police to provide adequate security for Olubadan and all the Authentic Mogajis of Ibadan land.

“We call on our amiable President to wade in to the undemocratic governance in Oyo state.”

Nigerians are frustrated, impoverished and angry, says DPC

0

Democratic People’s Congress (DPC) an opposition party, says Nigerians are frustrated, impoverished and angry and demand progressive government with a milk of human kindness as the nation marks its 57 independence anniversary.

In a statement by Segun Peters, DPC National Chairman on Saturday, the party says “it is unfortunate that Nigeria is still groping in the dark despite abundant human and natural resources”.

“The nation has been underdeveloped by successive governments at all levels who have looted the public treasury and impoverished the citizenry”.

It lamented that the current agitation and clamor for structuring instead of accelerated development of the nation connotes failure of leadership.

While noting that the situation in the country is deplorable and calls for a radical approach to governance that will uplift the living standards of the people, DPC expressed regrets that President Muhammadu Buhari has not executed any meaningful people-oriented project since his assumption of office.

It however, calls for devolution of power to States and Local Governments across the country which it says will facilitate developments at the second and third tiers of Governments.

“DPC also calls for drastic reduction in the so-called constituency allowance given to Senators and House of Representatives members to execute projects at their constituencies as it has become a drain pipe for them to siphon public funds and enrich themselves at the expense of their impoverished constituencies”.

DPC further demands for the reduction of the salary paid to Senators and House of Representatives members. The fat salary and allowances paid to members of the National Assembly have made them to be out of touch with the populace and influenced their call for independent candidacy to enable them come back to office. This must stop in the interest of the nation and our emerging democracy” it says in the statement.

We don’t know where Kanu is, we never raided his house, says DHQ

The Nigerian Defence Headquarters says it does not know the whereabouts of Nnamdi Kanu, the leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra, IPOB, who was last seen on September 14.

John Enenche, the Director of Defence Information told journalists in Abuja that neither the military nor any of the security agencies can be held responsible for Kanu’s disappearance.

This is coming after the British High Commission in Nigeria sent an enquiry to the federal government asking for clarifications on Kanu’s status and whereabouts, given that Kanu is also a British citizen.

Ifeanyi Ejiofor, Kanu’s lawyer, had alleged that the army may have killed his client. He even filed an application in court asking that Tukur Buratai, the Chief of Army Staff be compelled to produce Kanu.

But Enenche said the army did not at any time invade Kanu’s hometown in Afara-Ukwu, Umuahia, the Abia State capital as was widely reported.

“I watched the operations live. I also got first-hand information from our men on the ground. For the records, Nnamdi Kanu was never taken away by the military,” Enenche said.

“The military is doing their routine exercise operation (Python Dance). I saw everything, nobody raided Kanu house. I stand to justify it not from the information I got, I was watching it live. I was monitoring it live.

“Nobody raided his house, nobody went to ‘carry’ him. That must be very clear I saw the militancy, nobody told me.”

Kanu is currently facing treason charges at the Federal High Court in Abuja. He was granted bail on health grounds on April 25, and is due to appear in court on October 17 for continuation of his trail.

Meanwhile, the federal government has since declared Kanu’s group, the IPOB as a terrorist organisation and anyone who participates in the group’s activities risks a 20-year jail sentence.

Where is Nnamdi Kanu? UK asks FG

The United Kingdom has asked the Federal Government to provide information on the whereabouts of Nnamdi Kanu, leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra, IPOB.

Joe Abuku, the Press Officer of the UK high commission in Nigeria, told journalists that the inquiry was due to reports that Kanu has not been seen since September 14, 2017 after soldiers raided his hometown in Afara-ukwu, Umuahia, the Abia State capital.

He said that the British government had asked the Nigerian government whether Kanu, who is also a British national, was alive or dead but it is not immediately clear if the federal government had responded to the inquiries or not.

“We are seeking urgent clarification from the Nigerian authorities about the status and whereabouts of Mr. Kanu, a British-Nigerian man, who has been reported missing since September 14,” Abuku said in an email.

When asked if the UK would strip Kanu’s British citizenship since his organisation has been declared a terrorist organisation, Abuku said: “one of the conditions that can make the United Kingdom strip its citizen of nationality is if the person engages in a terrorist activity at home or abroad. And Kanu has dual citizenship and therefore a citizen of Nigeria and the UK.

“The Indigenous People of Biafra is not a proscribed organisation in the UK.”

Abuku, however, declined to comment on whether the IPOB was free to raise funds or hold rallies in Britain.

He also did not comment on whether the group could be designated a terrorist group or proscribed in the UK.

“We do not routinely comment on whether an organisation is or is not under consideration for proscription,” Abuku said.

“A decision to proscribe an organisation must be based on a belief that it is concerned in terrorism as defined in the Terrorism Act 2000, and it must be proportionate.”
