Insecurity: Police rescue 19 persons from kidnappers in Abuja

0

THE FCT Command of the Nigeria Police Force has said that 19 out of 22 persons kidnapped at Pei -Leilei road along Kwali axis in Abuja have been rescued.

Mariam Yusuf, the spokesperson of the FCT police command disclosed this in a statement on Thursday, adding that the operation followed a distress call to the police.

“In a swift response to a distress call, the FCT Police Command rescued 19 persons from being kidnapped on Pei-Leilei road along Kwali axis on Wednesday 25th November 2020,” the statement read.

According to Yusuf, the operation was conducted by a joint team of police officers in the command who engaged in a gunfight with the ‘heavily armed hoodlums’.

“The successful rescue operation was conducted by a joint team of Police operatives from the Command who responded promptly to the occasion and engaged the heavily armed hoodlums in a fierce gun duel,” the statement read in part,” said Yusuf.

She added that efforts are being made to rescue the remaining three victims in the custody of the hoodlums who escaped into the forest.

As the rate of insecurity rises in Nigeria, the Kwali axis in Abuja is becoming a hotspot for the kidnapping of civilians.

On Sunday, a yet to be identified Roman Catholic priest was kidnapped around Yangoji community in Kwali area council.

The Bishop’s kidnap was confirmed by Yusuf on Monday. She said Bala Ciroma, the FCT commissioner had launched a manhunt to trail and apprehend the victims but as of the time of filing this report, no update has been reported on the case.

Sequel to Nigeria’s insecurity, in a travel advisory, the Australian government has advised its citizens from traveling to Nigeria because it is ‘not safe’.

According to the Australian Department of Foreign Affairs, the threat of kidnapping is high in all parts of Nigeria.

“Kidnappers usually target locals, but Westerners, including Australians, have been taken. Aid workers may be targets,” the statement read in part.

Blasphemy: Kano High Court reserves judgement on appeal by Sharif over death sentence

0

A KANO State High Court has reserved judgment in an appeal brought by Yahya Aminu Sharif, a Kano musician sentenced to death by an Upper Shari’a Court for blasphemy.

Aminu was handed a death sentence in August this year after he was found guilty of blasphemy for making a song that purportedly insulted Prophet Mohammed.

According to the African Independent Television (AIT), the two-man panel led by Nura Sagir, the chief judge of Kano state and Nasiru Saminu after listening to arguments by the counsels told them that a day for the judgment will be communicated.

Kola Alapinni, who represented Aminu, told the court that his notice of appeal filed on 5th November 2020 and briefs of argument filed on 14/10/2020 were pursuant to sections 36 and 38 of the constitution.

The court also reserved judgment for bail application and appeal by 13-year-old Omar Faruk sentenced to 10 years imprisonment for complicity in the offense committed by Aminu.

Alapini argued that the judgement which rested on the Sharia Islamic legal code is unconstitutional, null and void, insisting that Nigeria is a secular and multi-religious country.

He therefore urged the court to set aside the judgement of the Upper Shari’a Court.

Aisha Mahmud, counsel for the respondents, while defending the judgement urged the court to dismiss the appeal.

The Shari’a court judgement had attracted widespread criticism and condemnation from Nigerians and civil society organisations.

While the outcries persisted in August, Abdullahi Ganduje, the Governor of  Kano State said the State Government had accepted the death penalty and would not waste time to sign the verdict in 30 days.

The Supreme Council for Shari’a in Nigeria also urged the Kano State Government in September to ensure the execution of the verdict.

2023: PDP yet to decide on Zoning of presidential ticket – Ologbondiyan

KOLA Ologbodiyan, National Publicity Secretary of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) on Thursday said the party is yet to zone its flag bearer for 2023 presidential election to the South-East or any other region in the country.

This is coming barely nine days after David Umahi, the Ebonyi State Governor defected from the PDP to the ruling All Progressive Congress (APC).

Umahi had partly attributed his decision to PDP’s failure to recognise at least a candidate from the South-East who could contest for the presidency, especially in previous general elections.

He said the South-East has suffered injustice in the PDP.

“… I offered this movement as a protest to the injustice being done to the South-East by the PDP,” he stated.

“Since 1999, the South-East has supported the PDP. At a time, the five states were all PDP. One of the founding members of the PDP was from the South-East, the late former Vice President, Dr Alex Ekwueme. It is absurd that since 1999, going to 2023, the South-East will never be considered to run for the presidency under the PDP.”

Ologbondiyan has, however, told The ICIR the party is yet to make a decision about zoning.

“PDP is yet to take a decision on zoning,” he said in a response to The ICIR.

The PDP has always adopted the zoning method to rotate power between the south and the north.

In 1999, former President Olusegun Obasanjo who is from the South-West emerged the president after he won the party’s presidential ticket against Alex Ekueme, a South-Easterner.

But for Obasanjo’s emergence, Ekwueme would have been the first democratically elected president of the country in 1999.

Umar Musa Yar’Dua, a northern took over after Obasanjo’s tenure. Though he could not finish his term in office, he spent about two years running affairs of the country.

He died on 5th May 2010 at the presidential villa and his vice, Goodluck Jonathan took over the mantle of power, thus completed Yar’dua’s tenure and got re-elected for another four years.

Jonathan is from the South-South.

Therefore, reports show that the South West has produced a president under the PDP, South-South has done same including the North West. Regions yet to lead the country under the PDP are the South-East, North-East and the North Central.

To address the situation ahead of 2023, the PDP National Caucus met in Abuja. The executive members met barely a few days after Umahi’s defection.

A Committee chaired by Governor Bala Mohammed earlier shared a review of the 2019 general election. The caucus eventually agreed to reposition the party, review its manifesto in line with the current happenings.

Senate screens Mahmood for second term as INEC chairman

0

THE Senate Committee on the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has commenced screening of Mahmood Yakubu for a second term in office as chairman of INEC.

Mahmood was renominated by President Muhammadu Buhari in a letter addressed to and read by Ahmad Lawan, president of the Senate during yesterday’s plenary at the floor of the red chamber.

Lawan subsequently directed the committee on INEC to expedite immediate action on the president’s request.

In his remarks before the committee, Mahmmod appealed to the National Assembly to pass the Amended Electoral Act Bill latest in the first quarter of 2021.

While explaining that passing the piece of legislation within the timeframe recommended was critical for the success of the 2023 general elections, INEC had submitted several areas for amendments in the Electoral Act.

According to him, it is extremely important for the electoral legal framework to be finalised in due time as INEC cannot conduct elections under uncertainty.

He stated that INEC would continue to deepen the use of technology for elections and explore other ways in which the electoral process could benefit from technology.

He disclosed that the electoral umpire was working to ensure that materials needed for the elections were procured well ahead of time.

Yakubu, who succeeded  Attahiru Jega was first appointed by Buhari as INEC chairman in November 2015.

El-Zakzaky and abuse of power

0

By Tola ADENIYI

WHATEVER is the alleged offence of EL-Zakzaky and his wife, it is inhuman to incarcerate them without a conviction for years unending.

This wicked ploy of committing an accused to prison without a court judgment is the worst form of injustice and abuse of power.

It is a ploy deployed when accusers know they may not secure a guilty verdict and so make the accused serve prison term through the back door.

It was done to Mustapha, Bamaiyi, to Dasuki and now El-Zakzaky. I am neither a lawyer nor a judge, but I know a case in court need not last till eternity unless there’s prejudice.

Whoever is exercising the power of life and death today should remember there is Life after Power.

Pass judgment on the accused today and either grant him his freedom or convict him. To do neither is absolutely wicked.

I am not particularly interested in whatever offence or crime the Man of God may have been alleged to have committed. And since the case has been brought up forth and backwards one can hardly remember what he was charged with initially.

I can recollect however that the case has been amended a million times such that only a magician can tell exactly what it is the holy man has done.

My interest in the matter like in all matters where those who are privileged to be exercising temporary power are using the power to oppress others is to remind both the oppressor and the oppressed that no condition is permanent.

One continues to wonder what joy anyone derives from the sadness or agony of another fellow human being. It beats imagination hollow how any human can sleep soundly conscious of the painful fact that his action is making another human sleepless.

In any decent society, if a man breaks the law, he is arrested, charged to court, given every opportunity to defend himself and if found guilty, appropriate punishment is applied. It is as simple as that.

But why in the name of all that are just, and fair things don’t work that way in Nigeria? Why do some people exercise power as if they are drunk or bereft of any human feelings?

One is also worried at the frightening level of indifference to other people’s plight in this country.

It does appear that all men and women of conscience have disappeared from the land. What is it that has taken away people’s voices? What has eaten up people’s balls?

It is usually convenient to blame the Head of State or head of government for all infractions. But you must ask yourself; is Buhari the judge adjourning cases in our courts? Is it a state governor that orders Public prosecutor [who is a professional with name and integrity to protect] to withdraw cases from the courts? Is it the Head of State who goes to the polling booths to chase voters away or snatch boxes and election materials?

Nigerian professionals of all classes are as culpable in the rot that has taken humanity away from our shores as the men and women who exercise power wrongly.

People are taught to owe loyalty only to their country not to the transient head of government or to political party. People are also taught to disobey unlawful orders or directives regardless of who is dishing out such reckless or inhuman orders.

Nigerians must resist blatant tyranny and ridiculous autocracy. Orders are dished out on daily basis by faceless outlets and most times by people who have no constitutional or lawful authority to do so. Every crooked face appears on television issuing orders to citizens of this country as if every office holder or every chief executive of a government agency is the government!

For an example, the head of Customs will wake up from the wrong side of his bed and declare that nobody or goods should go out or come in at our borders. And while he is doing so, the President of the country will be announcing to the whole world that Nigeria has become borderless and a particular set of people are free to enter the country without Visas and possibly even without passports!

As of today, we don’t know who is the highest authority in the Judiciary? We are no longer sure who the Director of Public Prosecutions is. Sometime ago, we were told that El-Zakzaky had a case with the Federal Government. At another time we were told that the Kaduna state government was the one holding the poor man and his wife hostage in an endless trial. It is really not conscientious to be playing pin-pong with another man’s freedom.

We ask again: why is El-Zakzaky being held behind bars? If he was alleged to have committed murder, read out relevant charges in court, expedite his trial and convict him or free him accordingly. If he had allegedly committed arson, or burglary or armed robbery or treasonable felony or whatever infraction, there are statutory laws and procedures to deal with whatever it is. But to hang on to extra-judicial tactics is a gross abuse of power and man’s inhumanity to man. Every religion, every faith, every philosophy condemns in unambiguous terms such a disposition in any civilized society.

I am not unaware that Nigerians in general have lost human feelings especially since all they see these days are exhibitions of animal behaviour. I am tempted to add that what we see and hear these days fall short of animal behaviour. Anybody who is in doubt should visit the University of Ibadan Zoo and watch in utter disbelief the decency and discipline exhibited by the baboons. I wrote an article in the Tribune sometime in 1980 titled “The Baboon of UI”, anybody interested should visit the Nigerian Tribune Library and read the article. You will be shocked to the marrow when you are confronted with the story of how orderly the baboons were in front of bananas!

I choose not to comment on the daily rituals of murders, assassinations, kidnapping, armed robbery, gang rape and mind-boggling stories of humongous treasury looting and unprecedented corruption, nepotism and arrant impunity. That will be a story for another day. A once promising country has become the butt of countries all over the world!

Whatever hell pit or shithole Nigeria has been reduced to in the comity of nations I appeal to all men and women of conscience regardless of religious persuasion to appeal to the supreme conscience of those exercising the power of life and death over El-Zazaky to grant him and his wife their freedom today. And if in the eyes of the law [the accuser, the prosecutor and the judge] they still stand accused, the law should expedite their trial and convict them or set them free.

There is, as always, life after power!

ENDSARS: Anambra judicial panel summons alleged killer cop, James Nwafor, 2 others

0

THE Anambra State Judicial Panel of Inquiry has issued a summons on an alleged killer cop with the defunct Special Anti-Robbery Squad (SARS), James Nwafor, and two others to answer questions bordering on police brutality and illegal killing.

The panel issued the order on Thursday during the resumed hearing of cases of police brutality in Anambra state.

According to the panel, DSP Abbatunume Joe and Hyianceth Nwankwo are also summoned to respond to allegations levied against them by petitioners.

The order of the Judicial Panel Inquiry followed an application by Abdul Mahmud, counsel to Iloanya, Adimachukwu, Onyemelue, and Akabike families who are petitioners in the state.

Veronica Umeh, Chairman of the Anambra judicial panel and a retired judge of the State High Court said the summoned persons are to appear before it on 8th December 2020 to answer allegations against them.

The ICIR had reported that Willie Obiano, the incumbent governor of the state had sacked Nwafor as his Special Assistant on Security Affairs following allegations by residents that he supervised and orchestrated the killing of innocent civilians while he was the OC SARS unit in the state.

A victim of police brutality had told the panel that in 2014, the SARS unit headed by Nwafor collected N400,000 from him to feed his son who they had already killed in their custody.

Meanwhile, the Kastina state judicial panel has disclosed that it has received more than 30 petitions from victims of police brutality in the state.

Justice Abdullahi Bawale of the Katsina State High Court who is also the panel Chairman said this during the inaugural sitting of the panel on Thursday.

Bawale assured petitioners and accused that the panel will ensure justice and fairness to all parties in every case.

Kabore wins Burkina Faso’s presidential election for second term

0

BURKINA FASO’S President Roch Marc Christian Kabore has been declared the winner of Sunday’s presidential election with 57.9 per cent of the majority votes, the electoral commission announced on Thursday.

His main challengers, Eddie Komboigo and Zephirin Diabre got 15.5 per cent and 12.5 per cent respectively.

Kabore, 63, has been under fire for his response to a five-year-old jihadist insurgency that has rolled in from Mali.

He was predicted to win the first round of elections and by winning an overall majority in the first round Kabore avoids a run-off election in which he would have had to stand against a single candidate backed by a united opposition party.

The elections on Sunday were held for both legislature and presidency. The results declared by the commission, known as CENI, showed that Kabore led with more than 235,000 votes.

The paramount court, the Constitutional Council, has a week in which to confirm the outcome of the elections.

One of the poorest countries in the world, Burkina Faso is struggling with a jihadist campaign that has claimed at least 1,200 lives since 2015 and forced around a million people to flee their homes.

Opposition parties maintain the votes were marked by fraud and flawed procedures, threatening to reject “results stained by irregularities.

Their complaints range from polling stations that either did not open or opened late, insecure handling of ballot boxes and arbitrary changes to voting areas.

Because of the unrest, the election was not held across at least one-fifth of the territory, denying up to 350,000 people the right to vote, according to CENI’s figures.

Pro-Kabore parties on Tuesday argued that all candidates were equally affected by the problems and that in any case, these were not on a scale to have any major impact on the result.

I was disappointed…, Gowon reacts to UK lawmaker’s allegation of looting CBN

0

YAKUBU Gowon, former Nigeria military head of state said he was disappointed by allegations and remarks by Tom Tugendhat, a United Kingdom lawmaker, that he looted half of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) before leaving office in 1975.

Tugendhat had during the UK Parliament’s debate to consider an E-petition signed by more than 200 thousand Nigerians requesting that officials of the Nigeria government who contributed to violation of human rights during the protest be sanctioned, alleged that Gowon committed the crime before moving to London where he was seeking asylum after he was ousted.

The MP disclosed that some Nigerian politicians have stolen from the coffers of the government and moved to London to hide their loot. He, however, asked the UK government to call out the corruption in Nigeria and use its power to stop the looting happening in Africa’s most populous country.

He asked the British Prime Minister, Boris Johnson, and the UK parliament to stop corrupt Nigerian politicians from profiting from the wealth of Nigeria and hiding it in England. He also urged the UK government to stop funding some Nigerian security agencies which he described as corrupt.

“What we are seeing in Nigeria today is part of that story. It is a tragedy that we are all watching and witnessing. As we see things falling apart, the pressure this time is not foreign colonialism, but corruption, violence and attempts at control. I totally agree with my friend, the hon. Member for Edmonton, that we need to call out the corruption and use the powers we have in this country to stop those who are profiting from the wealth of that great nation, and hiding it here.

“Some people will remember when General Gowon left Nigeria with half the Central Bank of Nigeria, so it is said, and moved to London. We know that today, even now in this great city of ours, there are some people who have taken from the Nigerian people and hidden their ill-gotten gains here. Sadly, we know that our banks have been used for those profits and for that illegal transfer of assets. That means that the UK is in an almost unique position in being able to do something to exert pressure on those who have robbed the Nigerian people,” Tugendhat said.

Reacting, Gowon, during an interview with Channels Television, expressed his surprise that a British parliamentarian could make such an unfounded allegation against him.

“It is certainly surprising, and I am disappointed that a British parliamentarian could make such a statement without checking the facts of what he was saying.

“I honestly was disappointed that such a remark is made,” he said.

While stating that he heard the news on social media, Gowon called on the lawmaker to get his facts right. He added that since his exit as military dictator, no one has accused him of money laundering against him.

He called on the UK government to take the necessary step, and added that making such allegation was an insult to him and Nigeria.

Insecurity: Police confirm death of monarch killed by gunmen in Ondo

0

THE Ondo state police command has confirmed the death of Oba Israel Adeusi, the Olufon of Ifon in Ose Local Government Area (LGA) of Ondo State who was killed by gunmen aroud 4pm yesterday.

The royal father was killed at Elegbeka, a community along the Ifon-Benin highway, while returning from the monthly meeting of the state council of Obas in Akure.

His vehicle was said to have been rained with bullets while the driver was trying to escape from the gunmen. He was rushed to the Federal Medical Centre in Owo, where he died as a result of gunshots he sustained during the attack.

Tee Leo-Ikoro, the state Police Public Relations Officer in the state, who confirmed the incident to The ICIR on phone said security operatives have been deployed to the area to comb bushes around the area where the monarch was killed to fish out the killers.

He stated that the police personnel would work with other sister security agencies to apprehend the bandits and secure the release of the victims.

Meanwhile, the Commissioner for Information and Orientation, Donald Ojogo said  Governor Rotimi Akeredolu has expressed condolences with family of the late king, promising that the perpetrators will be brought to book.

“The security agencies, especially the Nigerian Police  have been directed to fish out the perpetrators of this heinous crime,” Ojogo said in a press statement.

The Ondo state government had in November expressed worry and condemned the spike of insecurity in the state. The government has called on all security agencies to confront the development with a promise to provide necessary support in terms of both human and logistics aid to ensure the safety of residents in the state.

It called on residents of the state to cooperate with security operatives by providing information about crimes in their immediate environment.

Fake journalism institute condemns CNN report on Lekki shooting

0

A NON-EXISTING  journalism institute, International Institute for Investigative Journalism (IIIJ), has faulted the investigative report done by the US-based news giant, Cable News Network (CNN) on the October 20 shooting at the Lekki Toll gate in Lagos.

A report that has been widely shared on social media claimed that IIIJ, which did not exist until 24 hours ago, issued a press statement saying CNN report was “poor” hatchet job targeted at the Nigerian Army.

In an electronic statement signed by, Francois Deburoiche, its special rapporteur on Wednesday, the IIIJ said it came to this conclusion following a careful investigation on the events that led to the escalation of violence at the toll gate.

Checks by The ICIR however, showed that Francois Deburoiche is a pseudonym and the only reference to that name on the internet is in the press statement issued.

Also, the body that is supposedly international has no digital footprint on the internet- it has no website, nor any social media accounts such as Twitter and Facebook to identify them with.

Further checks by The ICIR revealed that an account associated with the ruling party in Nigeria, the All Progressive Congress (APC), on Twitter shared the report published by The Daily Sun newspaper from the press statement issued by the non-existing journalism institute, a report that was later deleted on the website of the newspaper due to lack of verification.

In a phone conversation with an official of Daily Sun newspaper who declined to be named, it was confirmed to The ICIR that the report was pulled down due to lack of verification of source of the press statement.

“We pulled the story down because there were no fact and the reporter will receive a query for the report,” Daily Sun disclosed to The ICIR.

The report that has been widely shared on both Facebook and Twitter was also published by some bloggers and media outlets online.

Tribune Online, a Nigerian newspaper also published the unverified report condemning CNN’s report on Lekki shootings and as at the time of filling this report, the story is no  more on the website.

Meanwhile, Nigerians on social media have also doubted the existence of the group that faulted CNN’s report.

A Facebook user identified as Abdul Jimoh, ” Tuale to the International Institute for Investigative Journalism for rubbishing the CNN in the eyes of the international community.”

Abdul in the post, demanded for IIIJ’s office and the investigative reports they’ve done in the past.

A Twitter user identified as Leon Ikechukwu said in response to APC Support tweet on the IIIJ press statement, “Used Google, Bing, and Duck Duck Go, and I never saw anything relating to an International Institute of Investigative Journalism. This is quite shameful, that you guys would have to resort to fiction to drive your agenda.”

From the reports gathered by The ICIR and checks online, we can say authoritatively that the International Institute for Investigative Journalism (IIIJ), does not exist and the press statement issued is fake.
