About 2000 people buried alive in landslide in Papua New Guinea

ABOUT 2,000 people are feared to have been buried alive after a landslide that occurred in Papua New Guinea on Friday, May 24.

According to a letter sent to the United Nations on Monday, May 27, by the Papua New Guinea authorities, the landslide buried a village and work camp in the remote northern highlands of the nation.

“The landslide buried more than 2,000 people alive and caused major destruction to buildings, food gardens and caused major impact on the economic lifeline of the country,” said an official in the National Disaster Center, Lusete Laso Mana, in the letter.

According to the letter, the area’s main roadway is closed while the terrain is still unstable due to water flowing beneath the rocks, which shifts the land and puts rescue crews and survivors in danger.

The area, in the Enga Province, is highly inhabited and close to the Porgera gold mine, run by Barrick Gold, a Canadian company in partnership with the Chinese company Zijin Mining.

The jungle region is located in a nation of around 12 million people, directly to the north of Australia. Tropical and split along linguistic, ethnic, and tribal lines, Papua New Guinea is endowed with abundant natural resources but remains relatively undeveloped.

In addition to the number of dead and missing over the weekend, the country estimated that about 1,250 people had been displaced as a result of the abandonment of more than 250 houses by their occupants out of fear of further slide.

Tinubu wrongly executed fuel subsidy removal, other policies – Obasanjo

FORMER President Olusegun Obasanjo has criticised President Bola Tinubu’s approaches to fuel subsidy removal and exchange rates as essential policies “wrongly executed.”

This follows the release of activities to mark Tinubu’s one year anniversary by the presidency.

In a statement signed by his media aide, Kehinde Akinyemi, on Sunday, May 27, Obasanjo was quoted  to have spoken at a Colloquium: “Nigeria’s Development: Navigating the Way Out of the Current Economic Crisis and Insecurity” delivered at the Paul Aje Colloquium (PAC) in Abuja.

He lashed out at Tinubu’s government, claiming that the present administration has not found the right way to handle the economy to engender confidence and trust for investors to start trooping in.

“Today, the government has taken three decisions, two of which are necessary but wrongly implemented and have led to impoverisation of the economy and of Nigerians. These are removal of subsidy, closing the gap between black market and official rates of exchange and the third is dealing with a military coup in Niger Republic,” Obasanjo said.

He added, “The way forward is production and productivity which belief and trust in government leadership will engender. No shortcut to economic progress but hard work and sweat.

“Economy does not obey orders, not even military orders. I know that. If we get it right, in two years, we will begin to see the light beyond the tunnel. It requires a change of characteristics, attributes and attitude by the leadership at all levels to gain the confidence and trust of investors who have alternatives.”

He noted that Total Energy had gone to invest six billion dollars in Angola instead of Nigeria.

“They know us more than we know ourselves. And now they are laughing at us, not taking us seriously. We have to present ourselves in such a way that we will be taken seriously. If the existing investors are disinvesting and going out of our country, how do we persuade new investors to rush in. We can be serious if we choose to be but we need to change from transactional leadership in government to transformational and genuine servant leadership.

“With change by us, the investors will give us the benefit of doubt, and security being taken care of on a sustainable long-term basis, they will start to test the water. With the right economic policies, attributes of integrity and honesty of purpose, all should be well with all hands on deck and the government becoming a catalyst for development, growth and progress.

Obasanjo submitted that tinkering with the exchange rate was not the answer to economic hardships in the country.

“The answer is consistency and continuity in policy to ensure stability and predictability. That way, we will be sure of incentivising domestic and foreign investment.

“There must be honesty and transparency in government dealings and contracts and not lying with deception about these issues. When the government is seen as pursuing the right policy, the private sector will go for production and productivity.”

This incident comes days after a Singapore Airlines flight SQ321 encountered severe turbulence with over 100 passengers injured, killing a British man with a heart condition and forcing the plane to make an emergency landing in Bangkok.

The Singapore airline noted that the turbulence occurred while the aircraft was passing over Myanmar’s Irrawaddy Basin almost ten hours into the journey.

During the terrifying ordeal at high altitude, passengers and crew were hurled violently throughout the cabin, resulting in injuries to their skulls, brains, and spines.

According to reports, air safety experts have stated that passengers frequently wear seatbelts too casually, putting them at risk in the event of an unplanned turbulence on the aircraft. Additionally, scientists caution that the phenomenon known as “clear air turbulence,” which is imperceptible to radar, is intensifying due to climate change.

EFCC confirms death of former Chairman

0

THE Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has confirmed the death of its former Chairman Ibrahim Lamorde.

A statement by the commission’s spokesperson, Dele Oyewale, disclosed that Lamorde died at the age of 61, while receiving medical treatment in Egypt.

The commission expressed shock over the death.

“He will be sorely missed both at the EFCC and the nation at large. The commission prays for the repose of his soul and comfort for his family, the EFCC and the entire nation,” the statement said.

Lamorde was a senior police officer and the pioneer director of operations at the  EFCC when it was created in 2003.

He also served as acting chairman of the commission.

After serving as acting chairman in 2011, he was confirmed by the Senate as substantive Chairman in 2012 under former President Goodluck Jonathan.

The statement confirming his death noted that he actively served Nigeria as a gallant anti-graft fighter.

The ICIR reports that Lamorde’s tenure as the EFCC chairman was characterised by controversies.

Lamorde’s controversial tenure

Shortly before he was replaced as EFCC chairman, he was investigated by the Senate for diverting N1 trillion which were proceeds of assets and cash recovered by the commission.

Some of the funds he was accused of diverting include those recovered from former Inspector-General of Police (IGP) Tafa Balogun and former governor of Bayelsa State, Diepreye Alamieyeseigha, among others.

Lamorde, however, denied all corruption charges against him and described them as smear campaign which should not be taken seriously.

He insisted that the EFCC had not recovered assets worth N1 trillion in the period under review, and he could, therefore, not divert funds that were not in the agency’s possession.

A statement by the EFCC in 2015 also described the allegations as unfounded, and accused the senator who petitioned Lamorde at the time, George Uboh, of maligning the EFCC leadership.

The commission also claimed that the senator was misrepresenting issues that took place before Lamorde became the EFCC chairman.

Lamorde was replaced by Ibrahim Magu in 2015.

However, the Senate ordered his arrest in 2016 for repeatedly refusing to appear before its investigative panel.

On one occasion, Lamorde was represented at the Senate by his lawyer Festus Keyamo, who is now Nigeria’s Minister of Aviation, but the Senate insisted that he personally appear before the panel.

Despite the order for his arrest, Lamorde was sent by the Nigeria Police Force to begin a course for senior police officers at the National Institute for Policy and Strategic Studies in 2016.

In the same year, a Federal High Court in Abuja ordered the Senate to desist from further investigating the ex-EFCC boss.

May 29: SERAP asks Tinubu to publish assets

  1. THE Socio-Economic Rights and Accountability Project (SERAP) has asked President Bola Tinubu to publish his assets on the anniversary of his first year in office.

The SERAP tasked the President to use the anniversary as an opportunity to demonstrate his avowed commitment to democracy, accountability, and openness in government.

It also urged him to encourage his vice, Kashim Shettima, ministers, and state governors to publish their assets declaration forms.

The organisation called on the President to ‘urgently’ propose a constitutional amendment to include provisions on the creation of asset declaration databases that publish government officials’ assets before, during, and after service.

In the open letter dated May 25, 2024, and signed by SERAP Deputy Director Kolawole Oluwadare, the organisation said: “Widely publishing your asset declaration form and encouraging your Vice-President, ministers, and state governors to also widely publish their assets would serve legitimate public interests.”

It added, “Publishing your asset declaration form and encouraging others to do so would also promote public trust and establish a system of transparency, accountability and public participation.”

The organisation noted that the openness and transparency in the details of asset declaration forms of high-level public officials would strengthen the country’s democracy and promote accountability at all levels of government.

It said further, “You promised in your inaugural speech on May 29, 2023 ‘to take proactive steps to discourage corruption, and to ensure that Nigeria is impartially governed according to the constitution and the rule of law.

“We urge you to use your first anniversary in office as an important opportunity to underscore and reaffirm your oft-repeated commitment to democratic governance, openness and public accountability by immediately taking concrete steps to implement the proposed recommendations.”

Third Mainland Bridge closed for repairs hours to commissioning by Tinubu

0

A part of the Third Mainland Bridge in Lagos has, again, been closed for repairs.

This was disclosed in a statement by the Federal Ministry of Works on Saturday, May 25.

Federal Controller of Works in Lagos,  Olukorede Kesha, disclosed in the statement that the section of the bridge leading to Oworo would remain closed between midnight on Saturday to 6.00 p.m. on Sunday, May 26.

The Ministry declared the bridge open for full operations about two months ago.

Minister of Works, David Umahi, had announced that the road would be commissioned by President Bola Tinubu.

“In the next seven days, the bridge will be opened to ease traffic. Officially, President Bola Tinubu will be commissioning the rehabilitated road when he will be inaugurating the construction of the coastal road,” the minister had said.

The Lagos State Commissioner for Transportation, Oluwaseun Osiyemi, also announced that the road would be fully opened through a post on his official X handle.

The ICIR reports that the bridge was closed in November 2023 following an announcement by the Federal Ministry of Works that comprehensive repairs were to be carried out on it.

It was opened briefly between December 21 and January 9 to allow ease of mobility due to the traffic often associated with the Yuletide period.

“The closure is part of the ongoing work that started in November 2023, focusing on fixing the ramps, and now, the remaining parts of the bridge will also be repaired,” Osiyemi had said in January.

It has also been closed for repairs on many other occasions in the past.

Tinubu will commission the bridge this week as part of the projects his administration has delivered in the past one year that it took over power, according to a statement by the presidency on Saturday, May 25.

Obi breaks silence on merger speculation

THE Labour Party (LP) presidential candidate in the 2023 general election, Peter Obi, has reacted to the speculations of a potential merger with the Peoples’ Democratic Party ahead of the 2027 general election.

In an interview with NoireTV on Saturday, May 25, Obi stated that he would support any merger aimed at making Nigeria better through effective governance.

“As long as any merger or any coming together is for a better Nigeria or new Nigeria and for governing properly, I am for it,” Obi said.

“If it is just a merger for election or state capture, I am not for it. Like I always say, I am not desperate to be a president, I am desperate to see Nigeria work especially for the poor people because we have a lot of potentials.

“If the merger is to be able to govern Nigeria properly, unlock all those things that will make Nigeria a better place, I am for it. It may be at the party level, it may be at the individual level, but we must come together and build a better Nigeria,” the former Anambra State governor added.

Obi said he did not doubt the sincerity of the former Vice President and candidate of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) in the 2023 election, Atiku Abubakar, who promised to support him if he emerged as the PDP flag-bearer in 2027.

He noted that a merger was feasible if the parties involved could find common ground and shared goals, despite their political differences.

“I don’t think any party in Nigeria is different from others. It is just human beings. I don’t know anyone that has ideologies that is different from the other. There are parties that have not reached that level of ideological difference. We are basically the same. Like Labour Party, we have it in writing, but we have not achieved it in behaviour and since we haven’t achieved it in behaviour, we remain the same.”

Obi expressed his intention to work with people who understand Nigeria’s problems and are passionate about improving the present situation of the country.

“So, what we need now is to look for individuals that are thinking alike. People that believe that where we are is not where we are supposed to be and that where we can be improved. People that can work together to make Nigeria better.”

Speaking on the internal crisis in the Labour Party, Obi said he was more concerned about the problem of the country rather than the political crisis in his party.

The  ICIR reported that a recent meeting between Obi and Atiku sparked speculations about a merger of some opposition political parties ahead of the 2027 general elections.

Speaking on the possibility with the BBC Hausa, Atiku said that a merger between the PDP and the Labour Party was possible, adding that he would support if he is chosen as the PDP’s flagbearer.

According to him, nothing will stop them from merging if the two parties decide to form an alliance.

The ICIR reports that both Atiku and Obi under the PDP, contested for the presidency against former President Muhammadu Buhari and Yemi Osinbajo of the APC in 2019.

However, in 2022, during the build-up to the 2023 election, Obi left to join the Labour Party and continued with his presidential ambition.

Obi secured third place behind Atiku in the February 23 presidential election, won by incumbent President Bola Tinubu of the All Progressives Congress (APC).

Emirship tussle: Sanusi, Bayero hold court in separate palaces

0

FOLLOWING the emirship tussle in Kano, both deposed and reinstated emirs, Aminu Ado Bayero and  Lamido Sanusi, respectively, are holding court in separate palaces within Kano, the state capital.

While the reinstated emir Sanusi holds court at the main palace, Bayero is occupying the mini palace in Nasarawa, both in Kano.

Although Bayero was dethroned by the state government on Thursday,, he returned to the city the following day, in the company of security officials and headed for the mini palace.

Upon hearing of his arrival in the ancient city, the state Governor Abba Yusuf issued an order for his immediate arrest.

Yusuf had handed  Sanusi an appointment letter as the 16th Emir of Kano,  but a court order halted his reinstatement.

The court ruling came after the governor signed a bill amending the Emirate Council in the state, which created five emirates, including the one occupied by Bayero.

The amendment abolished the five emirates, dethroned Bayero and four others, and paved the way for the reinstatement of Sanusi, who was dethroned under the previous administration when the now-amended Emirate Council Law was first established.

The ICIR reports that the current All Progressives Congress (APC) national chairman, Abdullahi Ganduje, was the state governor when the five emirates were created.

He led the state under the APC but the party lost to the New Nigeria People’s Party (NNPC) currently leading the state.

The current national leader of the NNPC, Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, appointed Sanusi as the 14th emir of the Kano Emirate.

Faulting the court’s ruling stopping Sanusi’s reinstatement, Governor Yusuf went ahead with Sanusi’s reinstatement.

Bayero, however, expressed optimism that he would be victorious at last.

“I call on the people to remain law-abiding as we await the pronouncement from the court in this legal matter. We call on the authority to be fair and just in this matter. Kano is like a mirror and an influential state in Nigeria.

“Whatever affects Kano may escalate across. May peace reign in Kano. We pray for Allah to bless Kano with responsible and just leaders.

“Justice is the way to go on every issue. There will be justice. Nobody is above the law. We will accept whatever the law says. I appreciate all the people who have shown concern,” he said on Saturday.

The two emirs have been staunchly supported by their loyalists, as crowds of supporters envelope the two palaces.

May 29: Tinubu to inaugurate controversial Lagos-Calabar highway, others

PRESIDENT Bola Tinubu has departed Abuja for Lagos to inaugurate and commission ongoing and completed projects under his administration.

The President will move from Lagos to other parts of the country during the week, beginning today, Sunday, May 26, till Friday, May 30, to commission other projects to mark his administration’s first anniversary, which will be held on Wednesday, May 29.

The special adviser to the President on information and strategy, Bayo Onanuga, stated this in a statement he issued on Saturday, May 25.

Part of the statement reads, “In Lagos on Sunday, the President will inaugurate the concrete-paved road to the nation’s major ports in Apapa and Tin Can Island. The reconstructed road which began under the Muhammadu Buhari administration was financed by the Dangote Group, using its tax credits.

“On the same day, President Tinubu will formally inaugurate, by virtual means, the refurbished Third Mainland Bridge, which has drawn public acclaim for its excellent finishing and aesthetic furnishing.

Onanuga said the President would also commission virtually, the rehabilitation of 330 roads and bridges across the country.

“The high point of the President’s engagements on Sunday will be the inauguration of the iconic Lagos-Calabar Superhighway, estimated to cost about N15 trillion,” it read.

The ICIR reports that the Lagos-Calabar highway has been enmeshed in controversy, as eminent and other Nigerians said the project failed to follow due process required by law.

Work has begun on the project that will connect nine coastal states in the country.

“President Tinubu will return to Abuja on Tuesday to begin another round of commissioning. He will first inaugurate the Southern Parkway, which the Nyesom Wike-led FCT Administration named after him.

“On Wednesday, the President will attend the National Assembly Dialogue Series, after which he will unveil the National Assembly Library Complex, named after him,” Onanuga added.

Commissioning of the Abuja Metro (Abuja Light Rail) project will also take place on the same day.

“President Tinubu will leave the National Assembly to relaunch the commercialisation of Abuja Light Rail, also known as Abuja Metro. He will symbolically join a train ride to the city centre.

“The Abuja Metro was completed in 2018 by the Buhari Administration. It was put into commercial use up till 2020. But with the onset of COVID-19, the train service was abandoned. Vandals descended on the facility, putting it out of use.

The statement noted that Wike, after spending $15 million and building access roads to the various stations, has refurbished it for commercial service.

“After the train ride, President Tinubu will also inaugurate the Wuye Flyover-Link Bridge and the Defence Intelligence Agency Headquarters,” the statement read.
