ICIR partners AUN, Kashere varsity on countering misinformation

THE International Centre for Investigative Reporting (ICIR) has partnered with the American University of Nigeria (AUN) in Yola, Adamawa state, and the Federal University of Kashere, Gombe state, on countering misinformation and promoting media literacy.

The partnership culminated in a two-day training for the schools’ students November 1 to 2.

It aims to reduce the dissemination and impact of misinformation in Nigeria by promoting media literacy and responsible information sharing among citizens.

The German Embassy in Abuja supports the project.

Students were taken a thorough step-by-step guide on how to combat false news, identify phishing websites, verify images and videos.

They were also taught how to write pitches, use OSINT tools, and archive claims online, among others, at the training, which was held within the schools’ premises.

The editor of FactCheckHub, Opeyemi Kehinde, who headed the facilitators, explained what could be said to be misinformation, disinformation, and malformation. He also stressed the need to cross-check sources cited in a report.

The seminar emphasized the need to identify false news circulated on various platforms and how to fact-check using the tools available.

Facilitators at AUN include Temilade Onilede, a fact-checker and researcher of DUBAWA, Kimberly Kures, an author and content creator, and Opeyemi Kehinde, the Editor of the FactCheckHub.

Facilitators at the University of Kashere include The ICIR’s editor, Victoria Bamas, social media and engagement consultant, Esther Ilesanmi, and a researcher with Dubawa, Silas Jonathan.

Students at the event expressed gratitude to the organisers as they revealed it was an eye-opening seminar.

Bayelsa Poll: Court dismisses case against APC deputy governorship candidate

0

A FEDERAL High Court in Yenagoa has dismissed a case seeking to disqualify the All Progressives Congress (APC) governorship candidate and his running mate from the November 11 off-cycle election poll.

The case, filed by an APC member, Isikima Johnson, was declared statute-barred by the court on Tuesday, November 7.

The case numbered FHC/YNG/CS/114/2023 was declared statute barred by the presiding judge, B. O. Quadri. Consequently, the court said it lacked jurisdiction to consider it.

Johnson filed the lawsuit, claiming that the party’s deputy governorship candidate, Joshua Maciver, was unfit to be on the ballot and that the party conducted an unlawful primary election.

Johnson contested the state’s APC governorship primary in April but lost.

She said that Maciver had previously been found guilty by a court and had lied under oath about his conviction history on his nomination documents to the Independent National Electoral Commission.

However, the court ruled that the lawsuit against Maciver was banned by statute because it was filed after the obligatory 14-day period.

Timipre Sylva, the APC candidate, picked Maciver as his running mate.

The ICIR reported earlier that the Court of Appeal sitting in Abuja on Tuesday, October 30, reversed the disqualification of Sylva as the valid candidate of the APC for the Bayelsa State governorship election slated for November 11.

The court, in a unanimous decision by a three-member panel of justices, restored him as the party’s candidate in the election scheduled for this Saturday, November 16.

It held that the claimant, Demesuoyefa Kolomo, lacked the locus standi to do so.

Consequently, the appellate court, aside from setting aside the verdict of the High Court that sacked Silva, awarded a cost of N1 million against Kolomo.

On October 10, The ICIR reported that a Federal High Court in Abuja disqualified Sylva from participating in the election.

In a suit marked FHC/ABJ/CS/821/2023, Kolomo, a member of the APC in the state, asked the court to determine Sylva’s eligibility for the election, given his past terms as the state governor from May 29, 2007, to April 15, 2008, and from May 27, 2008, to January 27, 2012.

The court ruled in the applicant’s favour, claiming that Silva, a two-term Minister of State for Petroleum Resources in former President Muhammadu Buhari’s government, had taken the oath of office twice, making him ineligible to contest again for governor. But Silva won at the Appeal Court.

Bayelsa joins Imo and Kogi states for the off-cycle election on Saturday.

The ICIR had, in a report, presented the top candidates for the polls in the three states and their chances.

Ailing Nollywood stars who sought public support in recent time

IN a video released recently, Amaechi Muonagor, a popular Nollywood actor, opened up on his ailment.

The veteran Nollywood actor could be seen trying to talk as he introduced himself and summarised his illness. Before that, reports surfaced alleging that the actor was sick – paralysed.

He said he did not publicly announce his condition since he did not expect it to linger.

“Right now, I can’t move; I can’t walk on my own. Half of my left leg is paralysed, and my left hand is not movable, so it is a problem for me.
“I’m calling on well-spirited individuals to come to my assistance, to see how they can help me. It is paralysis, half of my body.”

Earlier, John Okafor, better known as Mr Ibu, was shown in severe condition while being treated at a hospital. He disclosed that he was suffering from a horrible sickness that threatened his limbs. He made a public plea for prayers and financial support for his medical care in the video.

The Bukola Saraki Foundation cleared his medical bills as other Nigerians raised funds for him.

Ibu is a Nollywood veteran who has spent decades in the industry. He is well known for his humorous characterisation in each of his films.

Towards the end of 2021, a veteran Nollywood actor, Clem Ohameze, appealed to the public for prayers and financial support as he prepared to undergo spinal surgery.

Similarly, Prince Emeka Ani, an actor whose predicament started in 2020, suffered from a partial stroke and solicited help from Nigerians.

In 2022, Nollywood actress Kemi Afolabi revealed that she was diagnosed with lupus. She also said due to the illness, she had just five years to live.

Afolabi disclosed that she had to sell her automobile to pay the N1.2 million for medication she needed to take weekly to manage her disease.

The actress’ colleagues took to the public to solicit support to raise money for her medical care.

Taking to social media, actresses Toyin Abraham and Mercy Aigbe announced the creation of a GoFundMe page to support the ailing actress.

Meanwhile, the Actors Guild of Nigeria (AGN) refuted accusations that it forsook John Okafor, who is currently recuperating.

Created in 1998, AGN serves as the umbrella organisation for professional screen actors in Nigeria’s motion picture industry, known as Nollywood, promoting awareness, safeguarding members’ interests, and ensuring their well-being.

The guild, in a statement by the Director of Communications, Kate Henshaw, said that health insurance options have been made available for all their members.

“We want to set the records straight over the public outcry that the guild and his colleagues have abandoned Mr Ibu. The guild has never abandoned any of its members in need, especially with health interventions.

“We’ve been at the forefront of providing necessary support to Mr Ibu even before his health condition was ever made public, and this was done with full knowledge of his immediate family members.”

“We’ve had to task members privately to help in providing assistance towards the intervention. We do not make public any form of assistance we provide for our members in need”, she stated.

In 2021, the guild launched funds for ailing members, generating about N2.7 million. Some ailing actors who benefitted from it include Tom Njemanze, Prince Emeka Ani, Bruno Iwuoha, Evelyn Osugo, Ken Odunukwe, and Tony Goodman.

Earlier this year, AGN partnered with Medicard Health Management and Universal Insurance to re-launch the health management and insurance scheme for its members.

At the re-launch, the guild’s National President, Ejezie Emeka Rollas, claimed that the health and welfare of members was one of his administration’s top concerns and that they would ensure members have access to adequate medical care.

Following the re-launch, the guild organised a week-long health and wellness sensitization programme to raise awareness and encourage members to enrol in the health management system and insurance policy.

NNPC launches new crude oil grade

0

THE Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPCL) has introduced Nembe Crude Oil Grade, a new crude oil grade, into the international crude oil market.

Chief Corporate Communications Officer of NNPCL, Olufemi Soneye, stated this in a statement he signed on November 8, 2023.

He said two cargoes of 950,000 barrels each of the Nembe Crude Oil grade had been exported to France and the Netherlands.

He stated that the announcement of the Nembe Crude Oil Blend, produced by Aiteo, the Operator of the NNPC/Aiteo Oil Mining Lease (OML) 29 Joint Venture (JV), was made at the ongoing Argus European Crude Conference in London on Tuesday, November 7.

“OML 29, an asset located onshore Nigeria, is operated by Aiteo Eastern Exploration & Production Ltd., Africa’s leading indigenous hydrocarbon producer, following a historic acquisition from Shell in 2014. The Nembe Crude was previously blended with the popular Bonny Light grade and exported via the Bonny Oil & Gas Terminal,” he said.

Soneye explained that the crude oil grade had a low sulphur content and low carbon footprint due to flare gas elimination, fitting into the required spec of major European buyers.

“With its attractive Assay of API 29 and low sulphur content, the Nembe Crude Oil grade commands a premium to the global Brent benchmark. With the NNPC-Aiteo OML 29 JV back onstream, Nigeria now boasts of an additional crude oil export of two Cargoes at 950,000 barrels each per month and 1.2 Bcf of export gas monthly,” he said.

According to Soneye, the development signals the commencement of activities at Nigeria’s newest crude oil terminal, the Nembe Crude Oil Export Terminal (NCOET), which was licensed in line with the extant laws and crude oil terminal establishment regulations.

The terminal, he said, was conceived as a floating storage and offloading vessel (FSO) with a storage capacity of two million barrels and the ability to offload crude oil to any export tanker from AFRAMAX to very large crude carriers (VLCC).

It has a loading capacity of 25,000 barrels per hour and will be exporting over 3.6 million barrels of crude oil monthly at full scale of operation.

This development, he said, would enable Nigeria to meet up with its Organisation of Petroleum Exporting Countries (OPEC) quota of 1.7 million barrels/ per day and provide more foreign exchange to solve the country’s currency problems.

Innoson seeks law that mandates patronage of made-in-Nigeria vehicle

0

INNOSON Vehicle Manufacturing (IVM) has advocated for a procurement Act that mandates patronage of made-in-Nigeria vehicles by Nigerian government officials.

The Head of Director of Corporate Communications of the company, Cornel Nwigwe, who made the company’s position known in a monitored broadcast at ‘Arise Television Business Programme’ on Tuesday, November 7, said the patronage would create economic opportunities for other value chain players in the vehicle manufacturing sector.

“When an economy depends on foreign-made vehicles, it is exporting jobs and doesn’t help the economy. The automobile industry is the industry of all industries, and patronage of locally-made vehicles is not about helping Innoson but value chain players like battery, tyre, and plastic manufacturing firms,” he said.

He cited the example of the Japanese government, which supported the Toyota automobile industry with $800 million to subsidise Electric Vehicle Manufacturing (EVM).

” I think the government should not just harp on the policy of patronising locally-made vehicles but put its feet forward in supporting production so that the cars can be more affordable for an average Nigerian workforce.”

He expressed concern that Nigeria’s currency problems were affecting the company’s production line but urged the government to support vehicle auto-finance schemes with loan facilities at affordable interest rates.

“The government can support banks with funds to help average Nigeria key into automobile finance scheme. This way, you help the growth and sustainability of the automotive industry,” he added.

It would be noted that the automotive industry in Nigeria is one of the country’s most promising sectors due to its growing domestic market size. The large continental market offered by the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA) is likely to present an opportunity for the industry.

The Nigerian auto industry gained prominence in the 1970s and 1980s, with a production capacity of 149,000 units a year, but was constrained by the high cost of domestic production and weak demand amid economic problems, currency volatility, and the end of the commodity boom.

Today, despite having a vehicle market size of 1,150,000 for new and used cars and a growing middle class, the country is a net importer of mostly used vehicles, and domestic production has been declining. In 2021, imports of vehicles reached around $2.3 billion, with 60 per cent being passenger cars.

Dangote, BUA trade words over illegal FX deals

RECENTLY, Dangote Industries Limited, the parent company of Dangote Cement, claimed BUA Group, the parent company of BUA Cement, allegedly accused it of being involved in illegal FX deals.

According to a Punch report, some online news platforms reported that the special investigator, Jim Obazee, appointed by President Bola Tinubu to look into the Central Bank of Nigeria’s operations under the leadership of the former CBN governor, Godwin Emefiele, was probing the company for alleged illegal forex deals and money laundering.

Dangote Group had denied the allegation, claiming that the BUA Group was spreading inaccurate and detrimental information about the company’s image and reputation and giving a fresh twist to an assertion that did not sail through in 2016.

The Group had also called on all relevant agencies to investigate its FX transactions in the past ten years and make public any infractions discovered.

In a statement accredited to Dangote Group, the company said, “Dangote Group recalled that the spurious and false story was started in 2016 and published in both BusinessDay and Leadership newspapers, and accused the authors of the report of rejigging it to make it appear as authentic and a new development.“It is saddening to note that this publication of Monday, March 14, 2016, in BusinessDay and Leadership newspaper, where the author had alleged that about ‘$3bn foreign exchange sourced from the CBN were diverted to other Dangote companies outside Nigeria, a practice that encourages round tripping and effect money laundering since there is no proper documentation.”

Dangote Group said further that the two newspapers that were misguided into publishing the allegation as an advertorial (2016) have since publicly apologised to their management in writing as well as retracted the advertorial in its entirety in their respective publications, adding that BusinessDay and Leadership Newspapers admitted that Messrs BUA Nigeria Limited sponsored the advertorial.

Dangote Group stated that its foreign currencies needed for its project were sourced from the interbank FX window in compliance with the CBN approvals and that all its FX dealings regarding its African projects expansion were fully utilised for what they were meant for.Responding, BUA, in the statement, described the claim as “very cheap attempts at blackmailing the Group.

It also accused Aliko Dangote, the founder and chairman of Dangote Group, of sponsoring “campaigns of calumny” against it, using third-party platforms and that Dangote’s claim was another act intended to drive it out of business.

Aliko Dangote is the founder and chairman of the Dangote Group, a conglomerate measuring in cement manufacturing, sugar milling and refining, port operations, packaging material production and salt refining and has recently ventured into oil and gas refining.

Abdul Samad Rabiu is the founder and chairman of BUA Group, a Nigerian conglomerate concentrating on manufacturing, infrastructure, and agriculture.

Meanwhile, in the three-quarter financial statement for 2023, Dangote Cement reported that it had a net N99 billion in FX loss from its foreign currency obligations, blaming it on the devaluation of the naira from N461.1/$1 at the end of 2022 to N776.8/$1 at the end of September 2023.BUA Cement also, in its nine monthly reports, said it posted an unrealised foreign exchange loss/(gain) of N26.93 billion.

SUSPECTED terrorists, on Monday, November 6, killed five persons and abducted five others during an attack in Sayaya community in Matazu Local Government Area of Katsina state.

The state Police command said in a statement on Tuesday, November 7, through its spokesman, Abubakar Aliyu, that bandits in their numbers attacked the community on November 6, 2023, at about midnight, wielding weapons such as AK-47 rifles and shooting sporadically.

He explained that Police officers were mobilised to the scene and managed to repel the attack after engaging the bandits in a gun duel.

“However, five people were shot dead, two injured, and five people kidnapped by the assailants. The injured were rushed to the hospital for immediate medical attention,” he added.

The Police called on the public to provide any information that could aid the investigation into the incident.

He further disclosed that he lost his father during the attack, adding that the terrorists also rustled domestic animals and carted away other valuables during the operation.

The ICIR reports that the attack occurred just a day after a similar onslaught by bandits on the neighboring Musawa LGA.

On Sunday, November 5, around 10 p.m., bandits attacked the Maulud Celebration Ground in Rugar Kusa, in Kusawa, killing 14 people who had attended the celebration.

The ICIR gathered that Matazu and Musawa are neighbouring local governments.

Nov 11 guber polls: IGP restricts vehicular movement in Kogi, Bayelsa, Imo

0

THE Inspector-General of Police (IGP), Kayode Egbetokun, has restricted vehicular movement in Imo, Kogi, and Bayelsa states starting Friday, November 10.

The IGP also put a temporary ban on the movement of canoes, ships, and other means of transportation via waterways in the three states.

According to Egbetokun, the decision was made in accordance with the policies implemented to guarantee free, fair, and credible elections in the forthcoming election in all three states.

The Force Public Relations Officer (FPRO) Olumuyiwa Adejobi disclosed this while speaking to journalists at the Force Headquarters on Tuesday, November 7.

He said the the three states have been strengthened with different security equipment, including helicopters for aerial patrol.

In addition, certain state security groups, such as Ebubeagu and other quasi-groups, were prohibited from conducting operations during the exercise.

According to EgbetoKUN, the decision was in accordance with the steps implemented to guarantee free, fair, and credible elections in the three states.

The IGP informed reporters at Force Headquarters that, in light of the states’ riverine topography, both marines and gunboats had been stationed in the three states.

To tackle insecurity ahead of the November 11 governorship elections in Bayelsa, Imo, and Kogi states, Egbetokun ordered the distribution of 220 operational vehicles for election security surveillance.

In a statement released on Sunday, November 4, Adejobi revealed the development and stated that the Inspector General (IG) had encouraged all parties involved in the three states to keep the peace throughout the election.

The Inspector General provided additional details regarding the police readiness for the off-cycle polls, stating that the force will conclude its operational deployment in all three states on Friday.

In addition, the Inspector General declared that on election day, dignitaries and Very Important Persons would not be permitted to travel around with police escorts and that it is against the Electoral Act to move about with security assistants during elections.

In less than a month (on November 11), Kogi, Bayelsa and Imo state residents will elect a new governor as INEC conducts the states’ off-cycle governorship poll.

.

The states are three of eight states in Nigeria with off-season governorship polls.

The current governor of Imo State’s term expires on January 14, 2024; Kogi and Bayelsa States had respective terms that expire on January 26, 2024, and February 13 of the same year.

The ICIR, in this report, presented the top candidates in the three states and their chances.

The ICIR reports that the action will negatively affect the governorship election in the state scheduled for Saturday, November 11. The exercise will also be held in Bayelsa and Kogi states.

On Friday, November 3, the unions issued a five-day ultimatum to the Federal Government, demanding the replacement of the Imo Police Commissioner Mohammed Barde over his alleged involvement in the attack on Ajaero.

Although Governor Hope Uzodimma has stated that he had no hands in the assault on the labour leader, the unions blamed the attack on the governor, who is seeking re-election.

The unions also called for the arrest and prosecution of some of the governor’s aides and threatened to embark on a nationwide industrial action if their demands were not carried out.

Meanwhile, the Inspector General of Police (IGP) Kayode Egbetokun redeployed Barde on Sunday, November 5, shortly after the attack.

The ICIR reported how the NLC president was allegedly captured and brutalised during the workers’ protest in Imo State on Wednesday, November 1.
