Over N3m raised within two hours for teen Quadri unlawfully detained in prison

0

NIGERIANS have raised over N3 million within two hours to support Alabi Quadri, the teenager released today, Thursday, April 17, from Kirikiri Correctional Centre in Lagos State after being detained for months over what his lawyer described as a ‘baseless’ armed robbery charge.

The appeal, initiated by human rights lawyer Inibehe Effiong shortly after his release, sought financial help from Nigerians to urgently relocate Quadri and his family from Amukoko, Lagos, due to persistent threats to their lives.

“We have raised N3 million within two hours of announcing the fundraising for Quadri Alabi.

“We are still far from the target, but the amount raised so far demonstrates that there are good and spirited people in Nigeria,” Effiong wrote in a statement on his social media handle.

Effiong, who has been representing Quadri since the news of his detention broke, said the donations became necessary following serious concerns over the safety of the teenager and his family.

According to him, they began receiving threats almost immediately after Quadri’s release by the court.

“Amukoko is no longer safe for them; those behind his travails can easily target him or his family members again.

“This appeal has become imperative due to active threats to Quadri and his family. As of this morning, they still received threats.

“Upon the release of Quadri at the court, it became apparent that it was no longer safe for them to return to their home. Due to the urgency and severity of the situation, we have paid for and lodged them in a hotel for tonight,” Effiong said in a statement seeking financial assistance from Nigerians.

The lawyer confirmed that as of Thursday evening, over N3 million had been raised.

The funds, he noted, would be used to secure new accommodation for the family, support his widowed mother who trades to survive, and most importantly, rehabilitate Quadri, who has also expressed interest in furthering his education or acquiring a vocational skill.

The ICIR reported that after today’s court appearances, the Lagos State Directorate of Public Prosecutions issued advice exonerating him of wrongdoing, leading to his immediate release.

Background

Quadri’s ordeal began in January 2025 when he was abducted by two self-proclaimed “area boys,” identified as Lege and Baba Waris, near his home in Amukoko, Ajeromi-Ifelodun Local Government Area of Lagos State.

The teenager, who was returning from work at the time, was dragged to the Amukoko Divisional Police Headquarters (popularly known as Pako Police Station) and accused of participating in street fights, according to his lawyer.

But when the police arraigned him, he was charged with robbery involving four adults he did not know.

The police alleged that the group robbed two individuals of four mobile phones and cash, totalling N579,000, using cutlasses.

The lawyer also stated the police misrepresented his age to be 18, “knowing that disclosing his actual age would likely raise eyebrows.”

Effiong stated that the young boy’s predicament began following his viral picture during the 2023 electioneering when he stood in front of Obi’s convoy and later received financial support from the public.

The lawyer said some area boys felt entitled to a share and began to harrass him for not ‘settling’ them.

He further described the case as another example of Nigeria’s flawed justice system.

Kano Rep. urges constituents to stop hunting in southern Nigeria

0

THE member representing Rano-Bunkure Federal Constituency of Kano State in the House of Representatives, Alhassan Rurum, has urged his constituents to stop hunting in the southern part of Nigeria.

He said the practice is no longer justifiable.

Rurum gave the advice when he visited Bunkure Village on Thursday, April 17, to meet families of the hunters who were killed by vigilantes in Uromi, Edo State, recently.

The lawmaker stated that the level of insecurity faced across the country had changed certain practices, such as hunting, requiring hunters from one part of the country not to move to other parts of the nation to do such a business.

He told his hosts that because of prevailing insecurity, people should not carry weapons like guns and cutlasses and move from one region in the nation to another in the name of hunting.

It’s like you living in this community and to see some Southern tribe wielding dangerous weapons coming around, they don’t speak your language, and you don’t speak theirs. What would be your reaction?

“In like manner, you can’t be wielding dangerous weapons in southern communities where you don’t speak their language and they don’t speak yours in the name of hunting, the lawmaker stated.

He pledged to meet with hunters’ associations in the state to reiterate his counsel.

The lawmaker donated N5 million to the victims’ families and promised to build a school in their memory.

The hunters’ killing in Edo State, on their way from Rivers State to their home state, Kano, generated outrage across the country, with many calling for a thorough investigation into the incident.

The ICIR reported that President Bola Tinubu and other prominent Nigerians condemned the killing.

Tinubu, who expressed shock at the dastardly act, directed police and other security agencies to conduct swift and thorough investigations and punish the culprits.

Similarly, former vice president Atiku Abubakar expressed sadness over the attack.

In a tweet he posted on X, Abubakar said the protection of innocent lives must remain paramount and urged the authorities to act swiftly and decisively to prevent a recurrence of jungle justice.

Also, in a post on X, former Anambra State governor, Peter Obi, condemned the killing.

The Edo State Government, led by Governor Monday Okpebholo and his counterpart in Kano, Abba Yusuf, and other eminent Nigerians have worked to ensure that people behind the attack are arrested and punished.

FG secures release of 6 Nigerians detained in Cape Verde over false human trafficking claims

THE Federal Government has secured the release of six Nigerian women who were wrongfully detained by authorities in Cape Verde on unfounded allegations of human trafficking.

Their release was confirmed by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs on Thursday, April 17, and Nigerians in Diaspora Commission (NIDCOM), shortly after the women departed the island nation.

According to a statement by the Foreign Ministry’s spokesperson, Kimiebi Imomotimi Ebienfa, the Nigerian diplomatic mission in Guinea-Bissau intervened and actively engaged Cape Verdean authorities to ensure the safe return of the women.

The ministry noted that the six Nigerians had travelled to Cape Verde on a holiday trip but were wrongly profiled and accused of human trafficking allegations that were later found to be untrue.

The ministry appreciated the cooperation of the Cape Verdean government in resolving the issue and reaffirmed its commitment to protecting Nigerian citizens abroad.

“The Ministry of Foreign Affairs wishes to happily inform you that the Nigerian nationals, ladies, who were detained in Cape Verde have all been released and have left the country, too.

“The ministry engaged Cape Verde authorities via our Mission in Guinea-Bissau to secure their release. The six ladies travelled to Cape Verde for a holiday and were unfortunately detained on allegations of trafficking, which turned out to be false,” the statement read.

Background

The arrest of the Nigerian women gained attention after an X user, Tobiojenike, raised an alarm over their detention.

The user alleged that the detainees were being held in a small room, denied legal access, and assaulted by police officers.

The post further claimed the authorities were trying to covertly deport them while coercing another individual to falsely implicate them.

“The Cape Verde government is trying to sneak them out of the country that they legally came into! And trying to pin them as human traffickers with the aid of a random stranger who’s seeking greener pastures and has been convinced to agree to it!.

“They’ve been detained in a small room for days and attacked by policemen who have inflicted wounds on my friend. The ECOWAS is aware of this and is doing nothing!” she wrote.

In response, the Nigerians in Diaspora Commission issued a statement appealing to Cape Verde to return the women to Nigeria and treat them with dignity.

“They were accused of not having enough funds, and their phones confiscated. They were subsequently locked up in an immigration deportation camp at the airport.

“Reports from the immigration detention centre indicate that they are going through distress and trauma, with one of them having a medical condition without access to his drugs,” NIDCOM said in an April 16 statement signed by its Director of Media, Public Relations and Protocols, Abdur-Rahman Balogun.

The NIDCOM also disclosed that the six individuals, identified as David James Udoh, Lily Dada, Oghenero Adaware, Sherifat Abimbola Ogundairo, and Jesutomi Aina, had departed from Senegal to Cape Verde via a travel agency, Ìrìn Travels (@irintravels) and @theFARAWAY.

The Commission expressed concern over their deteriorating condition, noting that one of them was being denied access to vital medication.

It noted that the case was subsequently escalated to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and its consular and migration directorate, prompting diplomatic efforts that led to the women’s eventual release.

House of Reps reschedules meeting with Rivers sole administrator

0

THE House of Representatives has rescheduled its meeting with Rivers State Sole Administrator, Ibok-Ete Ibas, a retired vice admiral.

Chairman of the House Committee on Media and Public Affairs, Akin Rotimi, disclosed this in a statement on Thursday, April 17.

He said the 21-member Ad-Hoc Committee on Rivers State Oversight received a formal request from Ibas to reschedule the meeting initially set for today, April 17, at 4:00 PM.

“The committee has acknowledged the request and is in the process of coordinating a new date for the session and will, in the spirit of transparent and effective oversight, promptly inform the public once the rescheduled date is confirmed,Rotimi stated.

The ICIR reported that the House of Representatives special ad hoc committee overseeing the emergency rule in Rivers State summoned Ibas to appear before it on Thursday, at the National Assembly complex in Abuja.

The committee, formed by the Speaker on Tuesday, April 15, met for the first time on Wednesday, April 16, and decided to invite Ibas to provide a detailed briefing on the situation in the state since his assumption of office as sole administrator.

In a statement on Wednesday, the House spokesperson said the meeting would serve as a forum for committee members to examine early reports and ongoing developments in the state.

The statement noted that the committee aimed to ensure legislative oversight in the state.

Chairman of the committee, Julius Ihonvbere, stressed that meeting with Ibas was vital to have proper understanding of situation in the state.

He added that the meeting would enable the House to make informed decisions while fulfilling its oversight duties.

The ICIR reported that amid the political crisis that led to the suspension of Governor Siminalayi Fubara, his deputy, and the Rivers State House of Assembly, the Speaker of the House of Representatives, Abbas, inaugurated an ad hoc committee to take over legislative functions in the state.

The inauguration, held at the National Assembly Complex in Abuja on Tuesday, April 15, followed President Tinubu’s March 18 proclamation of a state of emergency in the troubled state.

Tinubu, in his nationwide broadcast, invoked Section 305 of the 1999 Constitution (as amended) to justify his decision and appointed Ibas as sole administrator.

The president cited prolonged political instability in the state as the reason for his decision, vowing to restore governance, peace, and security to the oil-rich state.

To fill the legislative vacuum, the Speaker constituted the 21-man panel with representatives drawn from Nigeria’s six geopolitical zones.

Addressing the panel, Abbas urged members to put aside partisan interests and focus on ensuring peace, governance, and stability in Rivers State.

The committee has Ihonvbere as chairman, and Ali Isah (PDP, Gombe) as deputy.

The ICIR reports that the House of Representatives and the Senate both passed resolutions endorsing Tinubu’s emergency declaration.

During a plenary on March 20, lawmakers gave their backing via a voice vote after the president formally informed the National Assembly of his decision.

The lawmakers further agreed to authorise the formation of an ad hoc committee, with members from both chambers of the National Assembly, to oversee the situation in the state.

Teen – Quadri – who stood in front of Peter Obi’s convoy regains freedom after months in detention

0

QUADRI Yusuf Alabi, the 17-year-old who captured national attention during the 2023 elections by boldly standing in front of Labour Party (LP) presidential candidate Peter Obi’s convoy, has regained freedom after months in detention.

A Lagos Magistrate Court on Thursday, April 17, discharged the teenager following legal advice from the Directorate of Public Prosecutions (DPP), which confirmed there was no evidence to support the armed robbery charge levelled against him.

Quadri was held at the Kirikiri Medium Security Custodial Centre in Lagos over what his lawyer described as a ‘baseless’ armed robbery charge.

Human rights lawyer Inibehe Effiong, who represented the teenager, confirmed the boy’s release in a statement on Thursday, April 17.

Effiong said the Lagos State DPP found no evidence to support the charge and recommended his discharge.

He noted that the presiding judge, A. O. Olorunfemi, discharged the teenager.

Background

The ICIR reported that Quadri’s ordeal began in January 2025 when he was abducted by two self-proclaimed “area boys,” identified as Lege and Baba Waris, near his home in Amukoko, Ajeromi-Ifelodun Local Government Area of Lagos State.

Effiong stated that the young boy’s predicament began following his viral picture during the 2023 campaign event when he stood in front of Obi’s convoy and later received financial support from the public.

The lawyer said some area boys felt entitled to a share and began to harrass him for not ‘settling’ them.

He further described the case as another example of Nigeria’s flawed justice system.

His detention drew public attention three months after his arrest, following a viral post on X by user @Hausa_girl showing his iconic photo and revealing he had been languishing in Kirikiri prison.

The post led to widespread reactions, including from Peter Obi, who urged that the rule of law be respected and contacted Effiong to take up the case.

Effiong threatens legal action against police, demands 100 million compensation

Effiong demanded the immediate removal and disciplinary action against the Divisional Police Officer of Amukoko, the Investigating Police Officer (IPO) Odigbe Samuel (an inspector), and others involved in the boy’s travails.

He also called on the Nigeria Police Force to issue a public apology and pay N100 million in compensation to Quadri for his unlawful detention and psychological trauma inflicted on him.

“We demand that the Nigeria Police Force should pay the sum of One Hundred Million Naira (N100,000,000.00) to our client as compensation. Also, we demand a public apology from the police.

“If the above three remedial demands are not fully complied with immediately, we shall initiate legal actions to seek redress,” the lawyer added.

Nigeria, Niger make peace move after 2023 coup

0

NIGERIA is making efforts to rebuild diplomatic ties with the Republic of Niger following months of strained relations triggered by a military coup in the neighbouring country.

According to a statement on his X handle on Thursday, April 17, the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Yusuf Tuggar, led a high-level delegation to Niamey, Niger’s capital, to re-establish Nigeria’s bilateral relations.

Tuggar said the visit aimed to rebuild trust and foster regional stability, stressing that it focused on enhancing cooperation between both nations in critical sectors such as security, trade, and energy.

He explained that discussions addressed mutual concerns, including migration management, the fight against desertification, and the revitalisation of the Nigeria-Niger Joint Commission (NNJC).

“Our engagements also addressed pressing shared concerns, including migration management, the fight against desertification, and the revitalisation of the Nigeria-Niger Joint Commission (NNJC).

“Nigeria and Niger remain united in their commitment to advancing regional peace and development,” he added.

The move came after diplomatic relations between the two nations were strained in the aftermath of the July 2023 coup in Niger, which saw Abdourahamane Tchiani seize power from the democratically elected government of President Mohamed Bazoum.

The coup drew widespread condemnation from the international community and prompted Nigeria, acting under the authority of the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS), to impose sanctions and suspend key cooperative agreements with its northern neighbour.

Some of the sanctions included border closures, freezing of Niger Republic’s assets in all ECOWAS Central banks, and suspension of Niger Republic from the regional bloc.

The fallout from the coup also disrupted security cooperation and trade between Nigeria and Niger.

The sanction was, however, lifted in February 2024 by the ECOWAS, citing humanitarian considerations.

Reports indicated that the Nigerian government slashed electricity supply to Niger by 42 percent, cutting it down from the initial 80 megawatts.

As a result, Niger’s electricity generation dropped by between 30 to 50 percent.

Niger’s Energy Minister, Haoua Amadou, stated this in an interview with AFP, following public outcry and a growing shift towards solar energy alternatives by citizens.

Does swallowing semen offer health benefits to women?

0

A claim suggesting that semen offers various health benefits has been making the rounds on TikTok.

In a video shared by the user @comicfreak, he referenced and reacted to another user’s video that promoted this claim.

In his video, @comicfreak argued that the woman’s claims were false and misleading, labelling them as misinformation. However, he did not provide any scientific evidence or health-based facts to debunk her assertions.

The FactCheckHub traced the original video, where the woman claimed that semen has multiple health benefits. The video was posted by another user on the app by @abidemitemi1

In the 51-second clip, a woman dressed in medical scrubs is seen posing while various keywords and text flashes intermittently across the screen.

The texts on the screen read:

Surprising benefits of swallowing sperm in females… Semen helps you get better sleep… Semen is a natural anti-depressant drug… improve memories and gives you energy… packed of multivitamin that give you best appetites… a natural pain reliever… prevents morning sickness and helps you glow… it helps post menopause health bone.

Since the inception of the the video on March 13, 2025 it has garnered an impression of over 60,000 likes, 83,300 reposts and 2,151 comments.

Given the sensitive nature of the claim, The FactCheckHub decided to verify the accuracy of the claim.

CLAIM

Swallowing semen offers several health benefits to women.

THE FINDINGS

Findings by The FactCheckHub shows that the claim is MISLEADING!

According to Healthline, a health and wellness information website notes that generally, the components found in semen are considered safe to ingest. However, in rare cases, some individuals may experience an allergic reaction to semen, a condition known as human seminal plasma hypersensitivity (HSP).

While semen is often thought to be high in protein, the amount is so minimal that one would need to consume large quantities—several gallons—to gain any meaningful nutritional benefit.

A report by Medical News notes that many of the nutritional claims surrounding semen are misleading. Given the small volume typically produced, it is highly unlikely that anyone would consume enough for it to offer any significant health benefits. Medical News also notes that there has been little research into the health benefits of swallowing semen.

Speaking with The FactCheckHub, Zuliah Abdulazeez, a medical officer that specialises in family and reproductive health at the University of Ilorin College of health sciences, highlights that there are no nutritional benefits for women as the body digests food ingested.

“No nutritional benefits as the body naturally digests its foods. There’s no harm if the partner is healthy and free from infections and infectious diseases,” Abdulazeez offered.

In addition to sperm, protein, and water, semen contains a range of other components, such as sugars (fructose and glucose), sodium citrate, zinc, chloride, calcium, lactic acid, magnesium, potassium, and urea.

Similarly to studies suggesting that semen may have natural antidepressant effects, some people believe it could also help relieve stress. This belief is linked to the presence of mood-enhancing hormones like oxytocin and progesterone, both of which are found in semen.

A notable 2002 study did suggest a potential link between semen exposure and improved mood, finding that women who had direct contact with semen reported fewer symptoms of depression. However, the study did not account for other possible factors influencing mood, such as the psychological effects of sexual activity itself.

Engaging in oral sex without using a barrier method of birth control can expose individuals to bacterial infections like gonorrhoea and chlamydia, which can affect the throat. Additionally, skin-to-skin contact during such activity can lead to the transmission of viral infections like herpes.

Since semen is a bodily fluid, it can also carry sexually transmitted infections (STIs), including HIV.

THE VERDICT

The claim that swallowing semen offers several health benefits to women is MISLEADING; while semen contains trace nutrients and hormones, health experts and medical sources agree there is no significant nutritional benefit to swallowing it, and doing so may carry risks of allergic reactions or sexually transmitted infections.

Bello accuses Natasha of defamation, petitions IGP for her arrest

0

FORMER Kogi State Governor, Yahaya Bello, has filed a petition with the Inspector General of Police (IGP), accusing Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan, a senator who represents Kogi Central District, of making defamatory statements against him.

Bello, through a petition signed by his lawyer, N.A. Abubakar, submitted to the IGP on Wednesday, April 16, called on the police to invite Akpoti-Uduaghan to present credible evidence backing her allegations against him.

The former Kogi governor alleged that during a homecoming event on April 1, 2025, in Okehi Local Government Area, the female lawmaker “maliciously” defamed him and accused him of being involved in an assassination plot.

The ICIR reported that Natasha staged her homecoming rally on April 1 in Kogi State, despite the State Police Command’s directive to cancel the rally.

The state government, led by Governor Usman Ododo, had on March 31 banned political gatherings in the state and went as far as declaring a curfew in her Okehi Local Government Area (LGA), which many believed targeted the lawmaker’s planned rally.

The government also warned that anyone coming into the state with a convoy of security personnel must seek clearance.

“Where she fails to do so, cause her to be arrested and prosecuted in accordance with the provisions of the law for criminal defamation, inciting public disturbance, and spreading false information injurious to public peace,” the lawyer wrote in the petition.

The lawyer also said that the utterances made against the Bello were not only false, reckless, and inciting, but “they constitute serious criminal defamation, false accusation and incitement to public disorder, all of which are offences under the Nigerian law.”

Bello claims that the senator’s actions violated Section 24(1)(b) of the Cybercrimes (Prohibition, Prevention, Etc..) Act, 2015.

“By accusing our client of plotting an assassination and naming him as a co-conspirator in a purported murder plot (with an attempt to disguise the killing as mob or ethnic violence), Sen. Akpoti-Uduaghan has:

“Gravely damaged our client’s reputation by portraying him as a violent and vengeful political actor, and misled the public and tried to incite ethnic and political distrust, especially among the clans of Ebiraland in particular and the people of Kogi Central in general.

“Brought his name into disrepute based on an allegation so weighty that, if left unchallenged, could harm his political career and personal safety; and abused her parliamentary status and platform by propagating such falsehoods without evidence, in a very public and politically charged setting,” the solicitor said.

The former governor also issued a letter to Akpoti-Uduaghan, through his lawyer, R.O. Balogun, demanding a retraction and public apology over the alleged defamatory statements made against him, or face legal consequences.

The ICIR reported that Natasha called on Nigerians to hold Governor Ododo, Yahaya Bello, and Senate President Godswill Akpabio ‘wholly’ accountable for any violence that may arise during her homecoming event in her state.

She warned that if the homecoming rally was infiltrated by violence, the aforementioned political figures should be held responsible.

The homecoming, widely believed to mark her return to her senatorial district following the crisis she had faced at the Senate, saw her supporters dancing and chanting in her honour, defying the security restrictions and ban, which many Nigerians see as political intimidation.

ARSENAL have advanced to the UEFA Champions League semi-finals for the first time since 2009, following a 2–1 victory over Real Madrid at the Santiago Bernabéu on Wednesday night.

The win secured a 5–1 aggregate triumph for the Gunners, who had previously won the first leg 3–0 at the Emirates Stadium.

Bukayo Saka gave Arsenal the lead in the 65th minute after a well-worked team move, calmly finishing past Thibaut Courtois.

Real Madrid responded swiftly, with Vinícius Júnior capitalising on a defensive error by Williams Saliba  to level the score just two minutes later.

Gabriel Martinelli secured the win for the Gunners in 93rd minutes with a fine placing.

Despite Madrid’s attempts to mount a comeback, Arsenal’s defensive setup came through, with Goalkeeper David Raya delivering key saves, while centre-backs William Saliba and Timber effectively neutralised the threat posed by Madrid’s frontline, including Vinicius.

During the game, Kylian Mbappe had little impact and was substituted after seemingly picking up an injury before full-time.

The result means Arsenal will face Paris Saint-Germain in the semi-finals, after the French club edged past Aston Villa in their quarter-final tie.
