Rivers people know presidential candidate I want them to vote – Wike

RIVERS State governor, Nyesom Wike, has said the people of the state already know which candidate he wants them to vote for in the 2023 presidential election.

He spoke at a Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) campaign rally at Port Harcourt City Local Government Area on Wednesday, February 1.

He noted that those who expect him to publicly declare his preferred presidential candidate, as he had promised in December last year, will be disappointed.

Responding to a challenge by the All Progressives Congress (APC) governorship candidate in 2015, Dakuku Peterside, who dared him to declare his preferred presidential candidate, Wike said he never promised to make a public declaration on his preferred candidate.

He stated that he never told anyone that he would face the cameras to announce his preferred candidate but that he told Rivers people which candidate they would support.

The governor further explained that he never stated the method of informing the people and never promised to hold live coverage to declare it.

“I never told anybody I will face cameras to announce to you this is who we will vote. I said I will tell Rivers people the candidate they will support. I did not state the method of telling it. I did not say I will hold live coverage to declare it,” he said.

He added that the people of Rivers already know who he supports and that those who expect him to make a public declaration are “mumu” (foolish) people who have never won in politics.

The governor also accused the State Commissioner of Police, Okon Effiong, of not doing enough to check perceived infractions on election campaigns by opposition parties in the state.

He accused Effiong of shying away from his responsibilities and warned that he would take over his job and unleash the Neighborhood Watch, a community policing outfit established by the state, on opposition parties if the CP did not perform his duties properly.

S’Court sacks Taraba APC guber candidate, Bwacha

THE Supreme Court has sacked the Taraba State All Progressives Congress (APC) gubernatorial candidate Emmanuel Bwacha.

The apex court on Wednesday, February 1, set aside the judgment of the Court of Appeal, Yola Division, which had earlier on November 24, 2022, reinstated Bwacha as the governorship candidate of the APC in the March 11 governorship election.

Justice Kudirat Kekere-Ekun, who led a five-member panel, confirmed the verdict of the Federal High Court, which stated that the APC did not conduct any valid governorship primary in the state.
.
The Appeal Court in Yola had reinstated Bwacha as the party’s candidate for Taraba state.

Two Federal High Courts in Jalingo and Abuja had at various times nullified the APC gubernatorial primary election and ordered a fresh primary within 14 days.

The Supreme Court, in its judgment, maintained that the court of appeal was wrong to have set aside the decision of the trial court.

Presidential election: Buhari not favouring anybody – Lai Mohammed

MINISTER of Information, Lai Mohammed, has said the President Muhammadu Buhari-led Federal Government is not aware of anyone in working against All Progressives Congress (APC) presidential candidate, Bola Tinubu.

The minister also said Buhari was not favouring any candidate.

Mohammed spoke while fielding questions from newsmen at the State House on Wednesday, February 1.

He stressed that Buhari was not favouring or disfavouring any presidential candidate ahead of the election on February 25.

According to him, the President is committed to ensuring a free and fair election and has made this clear in his recent statements and actions.

“On a more serious note, one thing I can assure you is that, no matter who, this administration is focused and determined to ensure a free and fair election. And I think this administration, and for that matter now, the most important person in this regard is Mr. President.

“I think he has shown by words and deed that he is committed to a free, fair and credible election. And fair, free and credible elections mean not favouring or disfavouring anybody.

“Everywhere he goes, he makes that very clear, even as recently as Friday, when he was in Daura. He said the same thing. So if there’s anybody who’s working against any candidate, we don’t know officially.”

Kaduna State governor, Nasir El-Rufai, had recently claimed that some individuals within the Presidential Villa are working against Tinubu’s candidacy.

He stated that the unnamed individuals are aggrieved about Tinubu’s victory in the APC presidential primary, where he defeated their preferred candidate.

El-Rufai cited the naira redesign policy as an example of actions aimed at Tinubu. He explained that the government initially resolved to remove petroleum subsidy which is costing the country trillions of naira. However, he claimed that some individuals in the Presidential Villa changed their stance on the policy.

The governor also alleged that the currency redesign policy was an attempt to sabotage Tinubu’s possible victory in the election.

He explained that the President has a history of changing the currency to catch individuals hiding illicit funds. However, he argued that the timing of the redesign, within the allotted time for the election, does not make political or economic sense.

Tinubu, at a rally in Abeokuta, Ogun State, also raised the alarm, alleging that the naira redesign policy and the fuel crisis in the country were part of the plot to undermine him during the election.

Tinubu’s outburst on exchange rate, an attack on PDP not Buhari – APC

THE Presidential Campaign Council (PCC) of the All Progressives Congress (APC) has said the party’s presidential candidate, Bola Tinubu did not criticise President Muhammadu Buhari in his outburst in Calabar, Cross River State, on Tuesday, January 31.

Tinubu, while condemning the current exchange rate of the naira at rally in Calabar, said President Buhari’s administration met the naira/dollar exchange rate at N200 but the naira had since depreciated in value to about N800 to a dollar at the parallel market.

Responding to the outburst on Wednesday, February 1, media director of the PCC, Bayo Onanuga said Tinubu blamed the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) for the current exchange rate crisis experienced in the country.

He stated that Buhari’s administration has been able to build back the reserve to about $38 billion.

According to Onanuga, “The reference to the exchange rate was not in any way an attack on the Muhammadu Buhari-led All Progressives Congress administration but an attempt to capture how the economic mismanagement of the PDP created a forex crisis in the country since 2015.”

He said that anyone who followed the entire sequence and context of what Tinubu said at the rally in Calabar will know he directed his missiles at PDP and Atiku Abubakar.

“Let’s not forget, the PDP left the forex reserve at $28 billion by May 2015, when Buhari took over despite unprecedented revenue from crude oil. The futile attempt to misrepresent Asiwaju Tinubu by the mischievous PDP media did not detract from his central message.

“Asiwaju Tinubu could not have meant that President Buhari does not know the road, having celebrated, numerous times, the achievements of the Buhari administration. Tinubu had also said at campaign fora he would build on the achievements, when elected on 25 February.

“Our candidate explicitly said the people should not follow PDP and Atiku because they don’t know the road,” Onanuga added.

Tallen urges security agencies to prioritise gender issues

0

MINISTER of Women Affairs Pauline Tallen has urged security agencies to prioritise gender issues.

This was disclosed in a statement by the Director of Press and Public Relations of the Ministry of Women Affairs Olujimi Oyetomi on Wednesday, February 1.

According to the statement, Tallen made the call at the 3rd Annual Forum of Women, Peace and Security Sector Reference Group held in Abuja on Tuesday, January 31.

The minister noted that prioritising gender issues within the security sector includes protecting the rights of female officers and taking note of their challenges.

“The 2023 theme of the Forum, ‘The Role of Female Security Personnel in the 2023 General Elections,’ Tallen said, was carefully chosen to recognise the inherent potential of female security personnel to promote free and fair elections as well as to ensure violence free voting that will encourage increased women political participation,” the statement read.

She acknowledged officials of the Nigerian Armed Forces who had paid the ultimate price in defence of the nation amid worsening security challenges.

According to the statement, the UN Women Country Representative in Nigeria and the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) Beatrice Eyong was also present at the event.

Eyong called for capacity building for Nigerian women to increase their ability to contest elective positions in the country.

“She noted that Women’s ability to vote for candidates of their choice or make themselves available to be voted for is hampered by socio-cultural and religious considerations,” the statement added.

Lawan: S’Court to rule on APC’s appeal against Machina Feb 6

THE Supreme Court has fixed February 6 to deliver judgment in an appeal filed by the All Progressives Congress (APC) challenging the disqualification of Senate President Ahmed Lawan from contesting the forthcoming election as the APC candidate for Yobe North Senatorial District.

A five-man panel of justices of the apex court led by Justice Chima Nweze, on Wednesday, February 1, adjourned the appeal for judgment after all the parties adopted their final briefs of argument.

Lawan lost his re-election bid on November 28, 2022, following a unanimous decision by a three-man panel of the Court of Appeal in Abuja, which confirmed Bashir Sheriff Machina as the authentic candidate of the APC for the senatorial election.

Despite the controversy surrounding the senatorial race, the APC submitted Lawan’s name to the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) as its candidate for the Yobe North Senatorial District.

Miffed by the development, Machina headed to court to seek redress and was declared the validly elected senatorial candidate of the APC by a Federal High Court in Damaturu.

The APC took the matter before the appellate court and argued that Lawan was the party’s chosen candidate for the election. However, the appellate court dismissed the appeal, and awarded N1 million in favour of Machina.

The court held that evidence showed that the primary election that produced Machina was conducted in strict compliance with the Electoral Act, the 1999 Constitution, and the electoral guidelines of the APC.

It noted that the election was also monitored by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) as required by law.

The appellate court also noted that the APC failed to join Lawan as a co-appellant in the matter and cited him as the 2nd Respondent, indicating that the party was working at cross purposes with Lawan.

APC, PDP, SDP members defect to Labour Party in Ondo

MEMBERS of major political parties in Ondo State have defected to the Labour Party (LP) ahead of the 2023 general elections.

The defectors, who come from the All Progressives Congress (APC), the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and the Social Democratic Party (SDP), declared their support for the presidential candidate of the LP, Peter Obi, at an event held in Isua Akoko, the headquarters of the Akoko South-East Local Government Area of the state on Wednesday, February 1.

Stephen Adeyeri, a former House of Representatives aspirant and one of the leaders of the defectors, explained why he and his supporters joined the LP. Adeyeri said Nigerians were tired of the two major political parties, the PDP and APC and that the LP offered the best alternative.

He praised Obi’s track record, both in Anambra State and in his manifesto, and said that he was the candidate to beat. He also predicted a landslide victory for Obi and urged supporters to vote for all Labour Party candidates in the forthcoming elections.

A competent hand was needed to change the fortunes of the country and that Obi was that hand, he noted.

Adeyeri also spoke about the issues facing the country, including fuel scarcity, lack of electricity and hunger, and said the problems would soon be a thing of the past if Obi was elected as President.

“Obi is the candidate to beat because he has proven to be competent among other candidates. His records, while he held sway in Anambra is in the public domain, he didn’t get all of that by subterfuge but by the dint of hard work,” he said.

“I’m here to sell the candidacy of Obi to my supporters, and I told them the reason why he must be elected, particularly his plans to move the country from consumption to the state of production.”

Adeyeri said it would be absurd if those who weaponized poverty against innocent residents were allowed to have their way again. He urged his supporters to vote for all the candidates of the Labour Party in the general elections.

The LP’s State Secretary, Agabje Abiodun, welcomed the defectors., advising them to campaign for the party. He pointed out that the Labour Party was the only fast-growing party in Nigeria and said that people were tired of the current situation.

Abiodun also spoke about the performance of the former governor of Ondo State, Olusegun Mimiko, who governed the state under the platform of the LP from 2009 to 2014.

He said Mimiko’s performance was laudable and that people should vote for the party based on its antecedents.

El-Rufai berates Buhari, fifth columnists over naira redesign, fuel crisis

GOVERNOR Nasir el-Rufai of Kaduna State has blamed President Muhammadu Buhari for approving the redesign of the N1000, N500 and N200 notes.

The redesigned notes have been scarce in circulation since they were introduced into the financial system on December 15, 2022, and have largely been unavailable even in commercial banks.

The Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) initially fixed January 31 as deadline to accept the old notes as legal tender. But with most citizens across the country still unable to obtain the new notes, the CBN Governor, Godwin Emefiele, was, on January 29, constrained to shift the deadline to February 10.

Nigerians’ agony over accessing the new notes has, however, persisted. Many commercial banks were, by this morning, not offering them at the counters, claiming lack of supply from the CBN. Many ATMs, empty of money, were also not dispensing. To many point-of-sale operators who had some, it was brisk business as they upped their commission by, at least, 100 per cent.

Besides Buhari, El-Rufai also blamed some people he described as “fifth columnists” for pushing some government policies, including the naira redesign and persistent fuel scarcity, that he feared could eventually cause unrest in the country.

The governor, in a monitored broadcast on Channels Television today, said the currency redesign move was the idea of a few people in the Presidential Villa, Abuja, and never the policy of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).

He said, “This is not the right time to embark on such an exercise because most parts of the areas in Nigeria have no banking facilities.

“I must say that the naira redesign and fuel scarcity are the handiwork of fifth columnists because they want to bring the country down. Otherwise, why must redesigning of the naira be the priority of the Federal government at this time?” he wondered.

El-Rufai, a prominent member of the APC, alleged that most of the people in the Presidential Villa are not APC members, “hence some of the policies they are churning out from time to time are those that will hurt the APC.”

When asked if he was not using his close relationship with Buhari to offer suggestions on how to solve some national issues, he dismissed the question with a wave of the hand, saying that he could not remember the last time he made suggestions that were accepted.

“I stopped going to the Presidential Villa four years ago. What is the use when every suggestion you bring will not be accepted?

”So I would rather stay back solving the problems of my state (Kaduna), which I believe will be more important to me and my people. I don’t go to the Presidential Villa anymore,” he declared.

The governor’s allegation would not be unconnected with the outburst of the presidential flagbearer of the APC in the February 25 election, Bola Ahmed Tinubu, at his recent campaign in Abeokuta, the Ogun State capital, where he said the naira redesign and current fuel crisis were the shenanigans of some people to scuttle his chances at the 2023 presidential poll.

El-Rufai disclosed that some members of “a cabal” within the Presidency and the APC of northern extraction had begun scheming to discredit Tinubu, his running mate Kashim Shettima, and the APC generally as a ploy to have another President from the North to replace Buhari.

Don’t use Nnamdi Kanu as bargaining chip for your election, IPOB tells Atiku

THE Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) have warned the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) presidential candidate, Atiku Abubakar, to stop using its detained leader, Nnamdi Kanu, as a bargaining chip for his election.

IPOB Media and Publicity Secretary, Emma Powerful, issued the warning in a statement on Wednesday, February 1.

This warning was in response to a recent statement by the Director-General of the PDP Presidential Campaign Council, Obiora Okonkwo, that Atiku would release Kanu unconditionally if he is elected.

Kanu’s international spokesperson and American counsel, Bruce Fein, had earlier called on Atiku, Bola Tinubu, and Peter Obi to promise to free the self-determination leader from the custody of the Department of State Services (DSS) if any of them become Nigeria’s next President in May.

Reacting to Okonkwo’s statement, IPOB stated that the PDP should demand Kanu’s release by the Federal Governmentinstead of using it as a campaign strategy.

The pro-Biafra group warned that Kanu should not be used as a political bargaining chip for the Nigerian election.

The statement noted that Kanu has been judicially declared innocent and should therefore be released from the “illegal” detention by the Nigerian government.

“IPOB leadership wishes to state that its leader should on no account be used as a political bargaining chip for Nigerian election,” the statement said.

“Mazi Nnamdi Kanu has been judicially declared an innocent man and that follows that he must be released from his continued illegal detention and torture by this present government of APC.

“We do not expect anything contrary but that the judgment of the Court of Appeal is implemented.”

The statement added that IPOB’s demand for a self-determination referendum remains consistent, regardless of who is in power.

The statement also stated that the right to self-determination is inalienable and that IPOB’s demand for a referendum is a democratic process to allow Biafrans to determine their fate and decide their future, whether in Nigeria or a free and sovereign Biafran nation.

IPOB emphasized that its demand will not change, regardless of the person or party occupying Aso Rock, the Nigerian seat of power.

24 days to elections, hoodlums attack INEC office, police station in Anambra

UNIDENTIFIED gunmen have attacked the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) office in Ojoto, Anambra State.

A police station and an adjoining residential building in Nnobi, located within the state, were also invaded in an attack that left one person dead and another with gunshot injuries.

Both attacks occurred in the early hours of Wednesday, February 1, and were confirmed by the Public Relations Officer (PRO) of the Anambra State Police Command Tochukwu Ikenga in a statement.

“The hoodlums came in their numbers by 1:45 a.m. today, 1/2/2023, with four unmarked Siena vehicles, armed with IEDs, petrol bombs and other explosives, invaded the INEC office, the police station and the residential building in the station.

“Unfortunately, one boy aged 16 years, a relative of a serving policeman in the station, was murdered by the armed men, while the other, a female aged 15 years old, sustained a gunshot injury. She has been taken to the hospital, where she is receiving treatment.”

Ikenga noted that security had been reinforced within the state following the attacks, and the situation was being observed.

The spate of attacks and insecurity in the South-Eastern region of Nigeria has continued to rise in recent days.

INEC offices and police stations have been targeted in attacks by hoodlums, raising fears and tension ahead of the forthcoming general elections.

In December 2022, at least four INEC offices were attacked within three weeks in Imo State alone. Several police stations have also been affected by the violence leading to the death of many security operatives.
