THE Nasarawa State Police Command has announced the arrest of a Kuje Prison escapee, Salisu Buhari.

The State Police Spokesperson, Ramhan Nansel, who announced the arrest in a statement on Sunday, April 9, said Buhari was apprehended on Thursday, April 6.

According to Nansel, Buhari was arrested along with one Zubairu Ali for motorcycle theft, but upon investigation, it was discovered that he was one of the escapees from the Kuje prison invasion.

The State Police Commissioner, Maiyaki Baba, has ordered the transfer of the case to the state criminal investigation department for further investigation.

Buhari is the latest Kuje Prison escapee to be arrested following the jail break that occurred when the prison was attacked by suspected terrorists in July 2022.

Several inmates, including suspected Boko Haram members, escaped during the incident.

SAINT Francis Catholic Church in Owo, Ondo State, reopened on Sunday, April 9, after being closed for almost a year following the terrorist attack that took place on June 5, 2022.

Worshippers filled the church to capacity as they celebrated Easter and marked the resurrection of Jesus Christ.

Bishop Jude Arogundade, who presided over the service, rededicated the church building to God for His blessing and mercy.

He recalled the desecration of the church by bandits who killed 41 worshippers in the June 2022 massacre.

Arogundade prayed for God’s forgiveness for the attackers and dedicated the church to the people of God to resist the work of evil.

The Owo massacre, which occurred in Governor Rotimi Akeredolu’s hometown, received widespread condemnation from local and international organizations.

Kukah to Supreme Court: Nigeria’s future lies in your hands

CATHOLIC Bishop of Sokoto Diocese Matthew Hassan Kukah has told the justices of the Supreme Court that Nigeria’s future is in their hands.

The Supreme Court will take the final decision in petitions filed by candidates and political parties who are aggrieved over the outcome of Nigeria’s recent general elections.

Major opposition parties, the Peoples Democratic Party and the Labour Party are challenging the result of the presidential election, won by All Progressives Congress candidate Bola Tinubu.

In his 2023 Easter message, Kukah urged the justices of the apex court to restore confidence Nigeria’s judiciary.

“Nigerians are saddened that your sacred temples have been invaded by the political class leaving the toxic fumes that now threaten your reputation as the last hope for all citizens.

“It is sad that your hard earned reputation is undergoing very severe pressure from those who want justice on their own terms. Nigerians are looking up to you to reclaim their trust in you as interpreters of the spirit of our laws.

“The future of the country is in your hands,” Kukah said.

The cleric also prayed God to guide President Muhammadu Buhari in retirement, while expressing concerns over his failed promises.

He said: “As you (President Buhari) prepare to return to Daura or Kaduna, I do not know if you feel fulfilled or that you met the tall dreams and goals you set for yourself such as: ending banditry, defeating corruption, bringing back our girls, belonging to everybody and belonging to nobody, selling off our presidential fleet and traveling with us etc.

“You may have followed my engagement with you through these Messages over the years. You publicly referred to me during one of our visits as your number one public critic with a huge smile. I commend you for the fact that you have known that none of this was done out of malice but that we want the best for our country.

“May God guide you in retirement while we all embark on the challenge of reclaiming the country we knew before you came,” Kukah said.

In his message to the President-elect, Tinubu, the cleric pointed out that the most urgent task facing Nigeria is not infrastructure or the “usual cheap talk” about the dividends of democracy, but healing the land of bigotry, while prioritising safety of lives and properties.

“I am hopeful that you (President-elect) will appreciate that the most urgent task facing our nation is not infrastructure or the usual cheap talk about dividends of Democracy. These are important but first, keep us alive because only the living can enjoy infrastructure.

“For now, the most urgent mission is to start a psychological journey of making Nigerians feel whole again, of creating a large tent of opportunity and hope for us all, of expanding the frontiers of our collective freedom, of cutting off the chains of ethnicity and religious bigotry, of helping us recover from the feeling of collective rape by those who imported the men of darkness that destroyed our country, of recovering our country and placing us on the path to our greatness, of exorcising the ghost of nepotism and religious bigotry,” he stressed.

JAMB announces new dates for 2023 UTME, mock exams

THE Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) has announced a new date for the commencement of the 2023 Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examinations (UTME).

The Board’s Head of Public Affairs and Protocol, Fabian Benjamin, who made this known in a statement on Sunday, April 9, said the UTME will now begin on April 25 instead of the earlier scheduled date – April 29.

The Board also announced the rescheduled date for its mock-UTME, which was earlier conducted on March 30 in 725 centres across the country but was plagued by technical hitches in some centres, denying some candidates the opportunity to sit for the examination.

The rescheduled mock examination will now take place on April 18, 2023.

Benjamin said that the mock examination was designed to test the preparedness of the Board and its partners for the UTME and to give prospective candidates the opportunity to have hands-on experience of the CBT test environment.

He said the Board is rescheduling the mock examination to give those candidates who were unable to sit for it due to no fault of theirs the opportunity to take the examination.

The JAMB spokesman noted that candidates who were present and screened for the mock examination but could not sit for it will have the opportunity to retake the mock examination on April 18.

He also added that the results of the candidates who successfully took the mock examination on March 30 have been released.

“The Board has brought forward the date of the UTME from April 29 to April 25 to accommodate some major and critical national assignments, adding that the adjustment in the date is to ensure that no citizen is denied the opportunity of exercising their civic responsibilities,” he said.

“By so doing, the board hopes that no citizen will be denied the opportunity of exercising their civic responsibilities. ” It should be noted that the board does not have the liberty of shifting forward its examination as other public examinations are billed to commence their exercises in the early part of May 2023.

“Yet another factor is the need to accommodate those institutions with stable academic calendar to resume as scheduled.”

He said the board would continue to partner with relevant agencies of government to ensure that its candidates got the best.

Shun ethnic, religious rivalry, Tinubu urges Nigerians

THE President-elect, Bola Ahmed Tinubu, has asked Nigerians to avoid ethnic and religious conflicts.

He said the country would progress faster if the citizens could shun the ethnic and religious strife that has fuelled distrust and division.

Tinubu said this in his Easter message to Nigerian Christians, released on Saturday, April 8.

In the wake of the February 25 presidential election, divisive debates influenced by religious and ethnic differences have dominated Nigeria’s social media space.

Addressing the situation, Tinubu urged Nigerians to love one another regardless of tongue, faith and tribe.

He urged Nigerians to commit to patriotic pursuits in the country’s interest.

“I send my best wishes to Christians in Nigeria and all over the world who are celebrating Easter this Sunday. As we all enjoy the well-deserved break, I urge every Nigerian to reflect on the priceless sacrifice and limitless love of God for mankind,” the President-elect said.

“As we celebrate, let us also remember our obligation, as God’s children, to love our neighbour, regardless of tongue, faith and tribe.

“For Christians everywhere, this celebration is in commemoration of Jesus Christ’s life of service and his supreme sacrifice for the salvation of mankind.

“And as we observe Easter this year, let us all imbibe the essential message of Christ’s ministry and truly begin to love our fellow Nigerians as we love ourselves.”

The President-elect further noted that Nigeria will achieve progress and prosperity faster if Nigerians can “eschew divisive, parochial, ethnic and religious sentiments and rivalries, and live more harmoniously with our compatriots”.

“Easter is about Renewed Hope and Redemption. It symbolizes the triumph of hope over despair, love over hate and condemnation, and optimism over cynicism. Let us embrace this spirit and recommit ourselves to edifying and patriotic pursuits in the interest of our nation,” he added.

Atiku to Nigerians: Don’t allow promoters of religious, tribal divisions succeed

FORMER Vice President and presidential candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) Atiku Abubakar has called on Nigerians not to allow promoters of religious and tribal divisions to succeed.

The former Vice President, who joined Nigerian leaders to celebrate Christians on this year’s Easter said, “We must not allow those who seek to divide us to pretend as if our problems are a result of another ethnic or religious group.”

While emphasising the importance of the celebrations, Atiku said that the commemoration was a time for deep reflection as it marked the sacrifice of Jesus Christ and his victory over death.

He stated that the commemoration was a time for deep reflection as it marked the sacrifice of Jesus Christ and his victory over death.

“It is a time to reach out to our brothers and sisters in need.

“It is also a time for all of us — regardless of faith or ethnicity — to come together to pray for the peace of our nation. We must all remain constant in our efforts to promote unity — across all lines — because united, our nation remains stronger, and we can thrive as a people,” Atiku said in a statement posted on his verified Facebook page on Saturday.

“Our shared experiences bring us to the conclusion that no matter what the forces of evil can do, we, as Nigerians, united in doing good, can and shall prevail,” he added.

He urged leaders at all levels to follow the virtues that defined the season – sacrifice, love, and charity – “and come together to help all Nigerians resolve the differences that divide us”.

He said Nigerians must collectively own their problems and find solutions to overcome them.

Senate health committee chair opposes doctors anti-migration bill

0

THE Chairman Senate Committee on Health, Senator Ibrahim Oloriegbe, has said the denial of full practice license to medical practitioners is never a solution to brain drain in the country.

Oloriegbe, who is also a medical practitioner, disclosed this in a series of tweets on Saturday, April 8 via his Twitter handle.

The Nigeria House of Representatives had on April 6 announced that the bill sponsored by Rep. Ganiyu Abiodun Johnson to make it mandatory for Medical and Dental practitioners not to be given full practicing license until five years after graduation, has passed through second reading.

According to the National Assembly, the bill is part of measures to halt the migration of Nigerian medical doctors to other countries in search of greener pastures.

Reacting to the proposed legislation, Oloriegbe said the factors responsible for brain drain are multifaceted and the mere denial of full practice license to medical practitioners will never resolve the issues, adding that it may aggravate them.

He wrote: “Besides, it is not only medical doctors that are leaving the country for greener pastures abroad, there are other health workers, as well as professionals in other fields of human endeavour, trained but leaving the country on daily basis for similar purposes, consequently, focusing attention only on the medical doctors is like curing one of many ailments that are threatening the life of a dying patient without finding solutions to the others.”

He claimed that the issues and facts related to granting of practicing license are not understood by the sponsor of the bill.

Offering his perspective as a medical practitioner of many years, Oloriegbe noted that the “proposed legislation at a minimum violates the right to the ‘Freedom of Movement’ (Sec. 41) and ‘The right to freedom from discrimination’ under (Sec. 42) as guaranteed by the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria (CFRN) 1999, as amended”.

“These rights cannot be ordinarily denied by any person or government. Thus, we can’t be seeking legal redress through an illegal procedure,” he added.

He noted that “a person who is “qualified as a Medical Doctor” cannot be denied a license to practice having been certified qualified, except if he is found wanting in the ethics of the profession.

Continuing, Oloriegbe wrote: “Labour laws will come into place here. Furthermore, before the bill can be considered for legislative passage and executives’ approval, the following fundamental issues are important to scrutinise:

  1. a) When does the 5-year period start, before or after the housemanship?
  2. b) What sort of license will be awarded to a fully trained doctor instead of a full license to practice under the proposal?
  3. c) Is there going to be a limit in the doctor’s scope of practice, and to what extent are the limits during the five years waiting period? And we need to establish why we are putting such limits; is it for lack of skills, or political expediency?
  4. d) What happens after the five years of denial of rights to practise?
  5. e) Consequently, how will this law advance the quality of clinical services, education, and research in any system, let alone, a crippled one like ours?”

Arguing that the challenge of brain drain in the country’s health sector cannot be addressed through the bill, he stressed the need to address the various factors that make skilled health workers desire to migrate out of Nigeria.

Proffering solutions to the issue of brain drain in the country, Oloriegbe listed the following:

“i. Medical students could be obliged to choose between paying the standard market rate for their training or opting for government-subsidized training. Quality education in its real sense can’t be free. Those who however opted for subsidized training after their qualification would in return be compelled to work in Nigeria for a certain time or refund the subsidies. This is a practice obtainable even in advanced countries such as the UK.

“ii. To achieve the goal of a mandatory work scheme, we can enable a system that will guarantee employment opportunities for medical professionals after their qualification and provide inflation-adjusted living earnings for a few years after graduation on the condition that they stay in Nigeria to practice. Apart from providing attractive remunerations, their work environment and career expectations should also be prioritized. Incorporating both measures should give us satisfactory results.

“iii. Lastly and importantly,  we need to improve our health system with sustainable investments to make it conducive for the various health workers to work. We can be assured of better outputs only if what we input is in good condition.”

He further appealed that rather than enacting laws that will curtail the rights of the citizens to free movement, the House should advocate for an improved system that will be very attractive and make medical practitioners unwilling to travel abroad to seek better living conditions.

Datti will debate with your preferred candidates not you, LP tells Soyinka

THE Labour Party (LP) has said it’s vice presidential candidate Yusuf Datti Baba-Ahmed will not engage in a debate with Nobel laureate Wole Soyinka over the outcome of the February 25 Presidential Election.

Soyinka had challenged Datti to a debate after the LP vice presidential candidate declared that it would be undemocratic to swear in All Progressives Congress (APC) candidate Bola Tinubu as Nigeria’s President on May 29.

Reacting to the challenge in a statement released on Saturday, April 8, the LP said Datti would only engage Soyinka’s preferred candidates in a debate.

In the statement issued by the Obi-Datti Media Office, the LP said Datti’s refusal to take Soyinka up on his offer was not out of cowardice but for cultural and political reasons.

The LP noted that the Nobel Laureate was not on any of the opposing ballots in the election.

The party however said Datti would engage in the debate if Soyinka could use his influence to bring his preferred candidates for the exercise.

“We state that the Labour Party’s vice-presidential candidate, Dr Yusuf Datti Baba-Ahmed, cannot take up Prof. Soyinka’s offer of a public debate, not out of cowardice, but for cultural and political reasons.

“Culturally it’s just not decent, their age and accomplishment gaps taken into account, for Datti to sit opposite the 88-year-old global icon and point out his folly to his face, even if the older man called for it. And politically, there is no basis for such a challenge because Prof. is not on the opposite ballots.

“If, however, he can use his influence to drag his preferred candidates, who resisted debates throughout the campaign, to the studio this second, Datti says he is more than willing to take them on,” the LP said in the statement.

Datti had on Wednesday, March 22, called on President Muhammadu Buhari and the Chief Justice of Nigeria not to swear in Tinubu, whom INEC declared as the President-Elect, insisting that declaring Tinubu the winner and issuing him a certificate of return was against the Constitution.

The 53-year-old, who was a guest on Channels TV’s Politics Today, stressed that “whoever swears in Mr Tinubu” has “ended democracy” in Nigeria, a position that did not sit well with Soyinka and several other prominent Nigerians.

Reacting to Baba-Ahmed’s comments, Soyinka described the remarks as a “kind of do-or-die attitude and provocation” that goes contrary to democratic disposition.

Soyinka said the LP vice-presidential candidate tried to “dictate to the supreme arbiter of the nation”, adding that it was unacceptable.
