0

THE Minister of Power, Abubakar Aliu, said the first set of power transformers in the €63 million deal between the federal government and Siemens have started arriving in Nigeria.

On August 31, 2018, in Abuja, the Presidential Power Initiative (formerly the Nigeria Electrification Roadmap) was formed between Nigeria and Germany.

Following several engagements and reviews on the technical and commercial considerations for the project, the letter of agreement was signed by the Director-General of the Bureau of Public Enterprise (BPE), Alex Okoh, and the Global chief executive of Siemens, Joe Kaeser, in the presence of President Muhammadu Buhari on July 22, 2019 at the State House.

The Siemens deal, which is expected to significantly improve the country’s electricity distribution capacity and resolve challenges in the power sector, was approved in December 2021.

In the agreement, Nigeria would provide a signature bonus account of about €15.2 million and N1.7 billion as its 15 per cent counterpart funding for the concessionary loan.

Based on the pact, The ICIR had reported, an order was placed for the purchase of 10 Unitra transformers and 10 mobile sub-stations.

The transformers, which are expected to rehabilitate the Nigeria Electricity Supply Industry (NESI), are part of the loan agreement with the German government through its electricity firm, Siemens.

Speaking at the 5th National Council on Power (NACOP), in Abuja, Aliu said the 10 Unitra transformers to be situated across the country had started arriving.

He also noted that the federal government had developed the National Renewable Energy Efficiency Policy, with the accompanying vision 30:30:30, which aims at achieving 30,000 megwatts of electricity by the year 2030, with renewable energy contributing 30 per cent of the energy mix.

“Renewable energy is taking the centre stage of the ongoing reforms in the power sector in Nigeria, as visible from the ongoing and completed projects like the Zungeru Hydroelectricity power project, which is at 97 per cent completion and is expected to provide 700 megawatts of electricity to the national grid,” he said.

The US remains Nigeria’s partner in fight against insurgency – Consul General

THE United States  US Consul-General in Lagos, Will Stevens, has reiterated that his country remains Nigeria’s partner in the fight against insurgency.

Stevens was addressing the perception that apart from selling military hardware like Tucano jets and Attack Helicopters, the US does not support Nigeria to fight its plethora of security challenges.

In an exclusive interview with The Punch, the Consul-General, who is on a three-year tour of duty in Nigeria, said that both countries had only chosen to be discreet about the corroborative efforts aimed at defeating the “bad guys.”

According to him, “We work together but you won’t see us saying these things; there is a lot of partnership on the field. For example, the US has been a key partner in Nigeria’s fight against piracy in the Gulf of Guinea.”

Stevens explained how the US Drug and Enforcement Agency (DEA) work closely with the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLA) by sharing intelligence and training security operatives.

“I think that is the best kind of support; learning from each other and learning together. Nigerian operatives know more about the drug traffickers than an American DEA agent coming in from Houston.

“One mantra I say all the time is that we don’t need African solutions to African problems, we need African solutions to global problems,” he said.

The Consul-General noted that the US was concerned about the insurgents terrorizing Nigeria because “they are transnational threats, and the same bad guys that deal in drugs, move wildlife products are sometimes involved in oil theft, illegal bunkering and the likes. They are bad guys and they don’t care.”

He added that the US security and support systems “are largely about partnerships and we put our Nigerian partners at the forefront.”

“You are directed to ensure that there is no disruption of businesses and other activities of law-abiding residents under the guise of enforcing illegitimate sit-at-home order in any part of the state.

“I urge all and sundry to remain vigilant, go about their lawful businesses and resist succumbing to the antics of the miscreants, including the spread of tension-causing fake news,” he noted.

He encouraged residents to cooperate with the police and provide relevant information that could lead to the arrest of the attackers.

Why Africa must sustain investments in immunization – Senegal’s president

0

SENEGAL’s President Macky Sall has called on African leaders to make immunization a priority.

Sall said the decline in immunization on the continent, occasioned by the COVID-19 pandemic, was a clarion call on the continent’s leaders to invest more resources in vaccines and routine immunization.

The Senegalese President, also the Chairman of the African Union, made the call preparatory to the Forum on Immunization and Polio Eradication in Africa’s meeting, which is holding in his country from Saturday, December 10.

Sall reminded leaders of the continent of the 25 million children who missed out on vaccination globally in 2021 because of the COVID-19 crisis and the toll the halt has had on global health, especially children.

He appealed to fellow African leaders to implement the Addis Ababa Declaration on Immunization to ensure that no child dies of vaccine-preventable ailment.

The ICIR reports that 45 African countries are signatories to the declaration.

In the declaration, the leaders pledged to ensure that everyone on the continent – regardless of who they are or where they live – receives the full benefits of immunization.

The countries noted that immunization reduces child deaths by 50 per cent and increases school enrolment and attendance for children.
They also agreed that broad-based, inclusive growth in Africa depends on a healthy population, which immunization helps to achieve.

Another agenda, the Immunization Agenda 2030, unanimously adopted by all member states at the World Health Assembly in 2020, provides a strategic framework for addressing key immunization issues in the context of primary health care and universal health coverage from 2021-2030.

Sall said the continent would save many lives and foster development if its leaders implemented the two plans.

This newspaper reports that the World Health Organization (WHO) declared Africa free of the wild poliovirus in August 2020, after Nigeria, the continent’s only nation with the virus, no longer recorded cases for months.

But there have been reports of polio cases in communities not reached by health officials for immunization on the continent. Here is the fact sheet on immunization on the continent.

Sall said that to tackle declining immunization rates and the resurgence of polio, African leaders must reaffirm their commitment to routine immunization, eradicating polio, addressing the resurgence of other vaccine-preventable diseases, and establishing vaccine manufacturing firms on the continent to ensure that no child is left behind.

His words, “It must be said loud and clear that immunization is a safe intervention. From conception to the first injection, vaccines follow a rigorous and standardized scientific protocol that leaves no room for chance. Immunization saves lives, especially those of women and children, who are, in many ways, vulnerable groups in society. Immunization is effective.

“It prevents human suffering and disabilities, and it helps to build strong immune systems in children.”

Meanwhile, the Acting Director of the Africa CDC, Ahmed Ouma, a doctor, assured that the organization had the expertise and the commitment needed to change the immunization narratives on the continent if the leaders played their roles.

“We are re-engaging around the Addis Declaration on Immunization to increase access to vaccines, improve outbreaks surveillance and response and invest in vaccine production in Africa. This is how we will protect our children from vaccine-preventable diseases and is key to the new public health order we are working toward,” he said.

Similarly, the Director General of the World Health Organization (WHO), Tedros Ghebreyesus, said the right to health includes the right to vaccines.

According to him, countries must ensure that routine immunization services guarantee equitable access to all children wherever they live.

He appealed for concerted regional and global action to expand access to life-saving vaccines that would enable the world to protect its people against multiple and concurrent outbreaks of diseases such as polio, measles, yellow fever, cholera, and diphtheria.

The Executive Director of the United Nations Children Fund (UNICEF), Catherine Russell, also noted that the lives of millions of children and adolescents were at risk due to a drop in routine vaccinations that could prevent killer diseases.

“We must urgently make up lost ground and expand our reach to prevent dangerous outbreaks of diseases like polio and measles, especially among children who have yet to receive a single immunization. We know this is possible if we all work together to reach every child.”

But the Chief Executive Officer of GAVI, Seth Berkley, harped on the need for the continent to execute the Africa Union’s 2040 vision to expand vaccine manufacturing.

Berkley said a thriving African vaccine manufacturing ecosystem would be a huge opportunity to improve health security and self-sufficiency for the continent.

Investigate allegation of 10,000 forced abortions, UN tells Nigeria

0

THE United Nations has urged the Nigerian authorities to investigate reports of systemic and coerced abortions allegedly perpetrated by its army since 2013, UN spokesman Stephane Dujarric has said.

An investigation by the Reuters news agency published on Wednesday revealed that the abortions carried out on women and girls with pregnancies ranging from a few weeks to eight months were mostly carried out without the person’s consent, and often without their prior knowledge.

“We call on the Nigerian authorities to fully investigate these allegations and make sure there’s accountability,” Dujarric told reporters on Friday.

The Reuters report said some of the girls were as young as 12 years old and just one out of the 33 victims who said they underwent abortions while in the custody of the Nigerian Army, admitted during an interview that she voluntarily consented to the procedure.

Five civilian healthcare workers, nine security personnel involved in the programme, and other government employees such as armed guards engaged in escorting pregnant women to abortion sites were also interviewed during the investigation.

“Reuters reviewed copies of military documents and civilian hospital records describing or tallying thousands of abortion procedures,” the report claimed.

However, the Nigerian military has denied the programme ever existed and said Reuters reporting was part of a foreign effort to undermine the country’s fight against the insurgents.

Chief of Defence Staff Lucky Irabor, speaking at the 61st session of the weekly media briefing organized by the Presidential Communications Team at the Presidential Villa, Abuja, described the allegations as spurious.

“I was informed by the Director of Defence Information that he received a mail from Reuters requesting to have an interview with me and he gave me a letter written by one Alexandra Xavis making all manner of spurious allegations, many of which have now been published by the same Reuters.

“I thought with the problems we are contending with, I should not waste my energy on such things besides, it falls within the realm of ‘my mind is made up’ and since that was the position of Reuters, I didn’t think it was necessary for me to call them up and engage in that.

“We are not unaware that there are extra-territorial elements who do not want us to live in peace or move forward. I am also aware that the war economy has affected many people and now that we are making progress, they think that we need to return to the old order,” Irabor said.

Similarly, the Major General who heads the military’s counterinsurgency campaign in the northeast Christopher Musa, in a November 24 interview with Reuters addressed the abortion programme.

“Not in Nigeria, not in Nigeria. Everybody respects life. We respect families. We respect women and children. We respect every living soul,” Musa was quoted by Reuters as saying.

Results from a frame-by-frame analysis of the video using InVid, a video verification tool, show that the face in the video does not match that of Abdullahi Adamu.

Further checks identified the man in the footage as an APC chieftain in Nasarawa state, Abubakar Abu Giza, as reported by Vanguard and The Sun newspapers.

According to the media reports, the APC chieftain was stripped naked, molested and humiliated by youth suspected to be supporters of APC in Lafia, the Nasarawa state capital, on Thursday, 8th of December, 2022.

“It was the mere imagination of mischievous people who are unfamiliar with the physical looks of Sen. Abdullahi Adamu.

“This unfortunate misplacement of the true physical look of the person of Adamu, is not in anyway to be linked to him,” the media reports quoted Mohammed as saying in a telephone interview.

THE VERDICT

The claim that the viral video shows the APC National chairman, Abdullahi Adamu, being stripped naked in Nasarawa state is FALSE; as the footage showed the face of one APC chieftain, Abubakar Abu Giza.
