THE Nigerian Television Authority (NTA) has said the woman crushed to death by a passenger train at the Chikakore axis of the Kubwa area of Abuja on Thursday morning was its worker.

In a post by the NTA on its verified Twitter Page Thursday evening, the television station revealed the victim’s name as Selimota Idowu Suleiman, who, until her death, worked at the Channel Five station of the NTA in Abuja.

NTA announced the victim whose car was crushed by a fast-moving train in Abuja on Thursday December 15 as its worker

The deceased was on her way to work when the train crushed her in her vehicle.

On Thursday, December 15, The ICIR reported the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Command of the Nigerian Police Force, through its spokesperson, Josephine Adeh, a deputy superintendent of police, confirming the tragedy and saying it had launched an investigation into the incident.

Reports claimed Suleiman’s car could not move fast while the oncoming train from Kaduna to the Kubwa terminal rammed into her vehicle.

The Nigerian Railway Corporation (NRC) restored the services of the Abuja-Kaduna train 13 days ago, months after it suspended services following an attack on one of the trains servicing the route by Boko Haram on March 28.

After the NTA confirmed the Kubwa train crash victim’s identity, the Chairman of the FCT Council of the Nigerian Union of Journalists, Emmanuel Ogbeche, said the victim was a journalist in a post on his Facebook Page. But he did not mention her name.

Slow circulation as newly redesigned naira notes go into use

THE newly redesigned currency notes of N1000, N500 and N200 began circulating across the country today, but with most citizens practically unable to lay their hands on them.

Nigerians had been eagerly looking forward to today, December 15, the date the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) had given as the commencement date of circulation of the redesigned notes to, at least, have a feel.

Most people were, however, disappointed as the automated teller machines they visited did not dispense the new notes.

The notes were, however, available in banking halls, which were filled with the size of crowds that had become unusual since the advent of ATMs in public spaces.

The ICIR checks in Abuja, the Federal Capital Territory, showed that ATMs and point-of-sale centres could not yet dispense the new notes.

A PoS merchant in Kubwa, Yomi Odunaike, told The ICIR that the UBA branch at Kubwa where he normally got cash for transactions was yet to commence dispensing of the redesigned currency notes.

“We were told to keep checking at the bank, and that most likely between tomorrow and Monday, they would be very available. Even from their ATMs, I’m yet to see the new notes being dispensed,” Odunaike said.

A trader at Gwarimpa, Mohammed Yunusa, said he monitored the market but had not seen people exchanging the new legal tender. According to him, even the PoS transaction services around his business premises were not dispensing the new cash.

Yunusa said, “My shop is very strategic here in Gwarimpa and I have looked around but am yet to see anyone with the new currency notes.”

Another PoS operator, Kelechi Okpala, said he got the new notes from a bank, which he said was rationing them.

Okpala said, “For those of us in the PoS business, my bank is rationing it for us at N20,000, begining with N500 notes. I am sure that by next week, the spread will grow.”

The situation is the same in Lagos, with the new notes still unavailable at ATMs, but being given out in banking halls.

The CBN governor, Godwin Emefiele, had assured the people of the ready availability of the new notes, urging them to embrace electronic channels available for banking and financial service transactions.

“The newly redesigned N200, N500, and N1,000 bank notes are now in banks and ready for issuance to members of the public.

“The currency redesign and reintroduced cashless policies are not targeted at anybody but are for the good and development of the Nigerian economy,” Emefiele had said.

He had also advised Nigerians to retire their old N200, N500, and N1,000 notes in banks before the January 31, 2023, deadline.

The CBN disclosed Nigerians had already deposited about N2 trillion of the notes being rested in banks.

The suspects were accused of fraudulently withdrawing the sum of N10.2 billion from the Kogi State treasury. They allegedly delivered the money to a Bureau de Change operator, Rabiu Tafada, in Abuja, to change to foreign currency.

Parts of the charge read, “That you Ali Bello, Dauda Suleiman and Abdulsalami Hudu (now at large) between January and December, 2021, in Abuja within the jurisdiction of this Honourable Court procured Rabiu Usman Tafada to take possession of the total sum of N5,865,756,800 (Five Billion, Eight Hundred & Sixty-Five Million, Seven Hundred & Fifty-Six Thousand, Eight Hundred Naira), which sum you reasonably ought to have known forms part of the proceeds of unlawful activity to wit: criminal misappropriation from the treasury of Kogi State and you hereby committed an offence contrary to Section 18 (c), 15 (2) (d) of the Money Laundering Prohibition Act, 2011, as amended and punishable under Section 15 (3) of the same Act.”

The suspects, however, pleaded not guilty to the charge.

Subsequently, prosecution counsel, Rotimi Oyedepo, SAN, prayed the court to give a date for the commencement of trial.

Counsel to the second and third defendants, Abdulwahab Mohammed, SAN, moved a bail application for the defendants.

Justice James Omotosho granted the defendants bail in the sum of N1 billion each and two sureties, who are to provide a bond of N2 billion each and have a landed property valued at N500 million.

The sureties are to submit their bank statements and International passports to the chief registrar of the court.

The sureties must also produce an affidavit of means and evidence of tax clearance for at least three years.

The matter was adjourned till February 6, 2023, for hearing.

The suspects were remanded in Kuje Prison, Abuja, pending the fulfillment of their bail conditions.

It would be recalled that the Kogi State government had accused the EFCC of what it described as illegal harassment of state officials over a bailout fund received from the Federal Government.

2023: Biden charges Buhari, INEC to allow free, fair polls

UNITED States (US) President Joe Biden has challenged President Muhammadu Buhari and the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to exhibit the highest level of fairness and impartiality in the 2023 general elections.

Biden gave the charge while lauding Buhari’s effort to deepen Nigeria’s unbroken democratic experience since the nation returned to democratic rule on May 29, 1999.

The US President met with Buhari and leaders of five other African countries, where elections will soon hold on the sidelines of the US-Africa Leaders Summit in the US Capital, Washington DC.

Other leaders at the meeting with Buhari are those from the Democratic Republic of Congo, Gabon, Liberia, Madagascar, and Sierra Leone.

The meeting allowed Biden and the African leaders to discuss elections and democracy in Africa, share experiences with the United States on their forthcoming elections, and encourage the countries to continue with the democratic process.

A statement released by the Senior Special Assistant to the President on Media and Publicity, Garba Shehu, on Thursday, December 15, said Biden appreciated Buhari for not seeking a third term but leaving office at the end of the second term allowed by the Nigerian Constitution.

The US President said Buhari honoured not only democratic values in Nigeria but on the African continent.

According to the statement, Biden said he had followed the trajectory of the Nigerian leader since 2015, when he was elected President, from being an opposition leader when he (Biden) was a vice president.

“He pointed out that he understands the challenges facing the countries and expressed the willingness of the United States to support them in every area assistance may be required.

“President Buhari expressed his appreciation to the US President for his positive remarks and congratulated him on attaining the peak of his political career, which is the presidency of the country. He also thanked him for organising the summit with African leaders and wished him well in all his endeavours.”

Buhari and Biden’s meeting on Nigeria’s 2023 election took place days after The ICIR published a report on how the US and Britain influence Nigeria’s presidential elections

The Minister of Works, Babatunde Fashola, had stated while inaugurating the Second Niger Bridge on Wednesday, December 14, that the bridge will be opened for one month during the Yuletide.

Fashola urged road users to drive safely and responsibly in order not to defeat the purpose of constructing the project.

He explained that part of the money used in constructing the bridge were stolen funds, mostly repatriated from the United States of America.

He added that the bridge would be open for traffic from the West to the East from December 15, 2022, to January 15, 2023.

“Let me be clear again; we haven’t finished construction work on the bridge but we would open it for people to use to relieve the pressure from the one bridge. On January 15, 2023, we would reverse that movement for those coming from the East to the West,” the minister said.

The first driver to pass through the bridge, Sunday Emem, spoke to Channels Television.

“I feel so happy. At least it will reduce the hold-up. We’ve stayed over one hour at the other bridge,” he said.

The 1.6 kilometres long Second Niger bridge links Anambra and Delta states.

The bridge was first proposed during the 1978/79 political campaign season by former President Shehu Shagari of the National Party of Nigeria (NPN).

In August 2012, the Federal Executive Council under former President Goodluck Jonathan approved a contract worth ₦325 million for the final planning and design of the bridge.

Construction of the bridge commenced on September 1, 2018.
